November Chronicles: Adventures Out of the Kitchen & Heartfelt Reflections

November kicked off with a truly heartwarming Friendsgiving dinner, a cherished tradition with our beloved community group. The air was filled with laughter, lively conversation, and an abundance of delicious, homemade dishes. We made sure to bring our culinary A-game to the potluck, contributing a delightful muffin basket – a true testament to our baking prowess! It was a truly special evening, marked by genuine fellowship and shared gratitude. Each of us took a moment to articulate what we were profoundly thankful for, creating a powerful sense of connection and appreciation that truly set the tone for the holiday season. These are the moments that truly enrich life, reminding us of the importance of community, the joy of togetherness, and the simple, yet profound, act of sharing our blessings with those we hold dear. It’s these shared experiences, full of warmth and connection, that we carry with us throughout the busiest times of the year.

Speaking of unexpected events and the quirks of home life, a few months prior, my friend Abbey and I embarked on a fun, creative endeavor, crafting beautiful twig wreaths to adorn our front doors. They were perfect autumnal accents, adding a charming, rustic touch to our homes. However, one fateful Sunday, returning from church, I was met with a rather peculiar sight: my wreath had begun to melt! It was a surreal moment, instantly bringing to mind Salvador Dali’s iconic melting clocks. Our front door, unfortunately, faces the relentless afternoon sun, becoming incredibly hot to the touch – sometimes even enough to cause a mild burn if you’re not careful. The poor wreath is now safely tucked away in the closet, awaiting a much-needed repair, a testament to the unexpected challenges of outdoor decor in extreme conditions. In stark contrast to the melting drama, the second photo captures a much more relaxed and anticipated scene: a prerequisite for watching Sunday night football with Ryan. For him, a successful game night absolutely *requires* pizza. It’s a simple, non-negotiable ritual that ensures I’ll join him on the couch, making for a perfect, cozy evening of sports and comfort food, a cherished routine that brings us together.

One of the small, yet incredibly delightful, joys of living with a furry companion like Salsa is discovering them curled up in unexpected places. I absolutely adore it when Salsa, our charming canine, decides to commandeer my spot on the bed. Typically, this means I’m relegated to a tiny corner, but this particular evening, he was gracious enough to leave me ample space, making for a truly cozy snuggle session. His warm, comforting presence always adds an extra layer of serenity and contentment to our home, turning ordinary moments into cherished memories. The second image provides a relatable glimpse into the evening routines of many busy couples. I had already retreated to bed, leaving Ryan to stay up and tackle some work. However, it appears the irresistible lure of sleep proved too strong, and he peacefully succumbed to the “zzzzz’s,” caught in a quiet slumber right at his desk. It’s a sweet, candid moment that perfectly encapsulates the ebb and flow of a demanding life, reminding us that even the most dedicated among us need their rest, and sometimes, sleep simply overtakes ambition.

Ryan and I recently had a spontaneous board game night, and after much deliberation, I reluctantly agreed to play a round of Risk with him. My hesitation stems from a few key factors: firstly, Risk is notorious for its epic duration, often feeling like it takes an eternity to complete a single game, demanding significant commitment. Secondly, it is a highly strategic game, and truthfully, I’ve always struggled with strategy-heavy challenges, especially since Ryan consistently outmaneuvers me with his tactical prowess. Lastly, despite numerous attempts, I still find myself grappling with some of the intricate rules, making each game a learning curve. However, to my genuine surprise, we managed to play for a solid hour, and with Ryan’s patient guidance and helpful tips, I was actually winning! It was a rare and immensely satisfying victory, proving that sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to unexpected enjoyment and even success. The second photo captures another small but significant joy in our daily lives: discovering a short cart available at Meijer. Seriously, these compact carts are an absolute game-changer for quick grocery runs, making the entire shopping experience infinitely more manageable and less cumbersome. It’s the little conveniences like these that truly make a positive difference in our busy routines.

In the joyous spirit of the approaching holiday season, I found myself immersed in a delightful and festive project for the blog: crafting a truly unique nutty gingerbread house. This particular activity holds a deeply special place in my heart, instantly evoking cherished childhood memories. Growing up, making gingerbread houses was an annual Christmas tradition, a festive ritual we eagerly anticipated each year. Recreating that magic for the blog was incredibly fun and brought back a wonderful wave of nostalgia, reminding me of the simple joys of holiday crafting and the sweet anticipation of Christmas. The intricate details, the aromatic spices, and the process of decorating are truly a wonderful way to usher in the festive spirit. The second photo introduces us to Salsa’s latest quirky obsession: a newfound favorite hideaway in the house. He’s discovered the shower stall, and while it’s undeniably cute to see him exploring this unusual spot, it did lead to one rather humorous incident. Ryan, completely unaware of Salsa’s stealthy presence, accidentally turned on the shower while our curious canine was inside! Thankfully, no harm was done, just a very surprised (and slightly damp) Salsa, and a good laugh for both of us, adding another comical anecdote to our pet adventures.

November also brought the wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with my dad, who was in town for a conference. It’s always a treat to have him visit, and we made the most of his stay, enjoying delicious dinners together and attending church as a family. These moments are particularly precious now that he’s retired; he’s embraced his newfound freedom with gusto, embarking on all sorts of exciting road trips and adventures across the country, which is truly inspiring to see. His visits always bring a comforting sense of familiarity, wisdom, and warmth into our home, creating lasting memories. The second photo is an undeniable moment of pure cuteness: a captivating close-up of Salsa, radiating charm and innocence. Seriously, how can anyone resist that sweet face and those soulful eyes? It’s these candid snapshots of our furry family member that bring so much joy and light into our everyday lives, constantly reminding us of the unconditional love and delightful companionship they offer, making every day a little brighter.

One of the most fulfilling and exciting aspects of November for me has been the significant increase in “human photography” opportunities. For a long time, my photography niche primarily revolved around food and lifestyle, but I’ve been eager to expand my skills and portfolio to include portraiture. This month, I had the distinct pleasure of assisting my talented friend Emily, the creative force behind Mrs. Emily, with photographing her fantastic product line. Her collection includes an array of stylish t-shirts, cozy pillows, and other beautifully designed items, all adorned with the most clever, witty, and inspiring sayings. Emily possesses an incredible knack for unique messaging and creative concepts, making her products truly stand out and resonate. It’s been an absolute joy collaborating with her, helping to bring her artistic vision to life through my lens, and further developing my passion for capturing genuine human expressions, product aesthetics, and impactful storytelling through images. This experience has truly solidified my growing love for portrait and commercial photography.

Another delightful gathering this month involved a few of my wonderful Bible study friends. We came together for a cozy crafting session, dedicated to making fleece tie blankets. It might sound like a project typically reserved for younger crafters, but as twenty-somethings, we absolutely embraced the simple joy of it! The resulting blankets are incredibly soft, warm, and cozy, perfect for snuggling up on chilly evenings or gifting to loved ones. It was a wonderful way to bond, share stories, and create something tangible and comforting together, reminding us of the simple pleasures of friendship and creativity. The second photo captures a rather entertaining (and slightly infuriating for Salsa) daily drama: a persistent and incredibly mischievous squirrel. This creature spent the entire day terrorizing Salsa, getting incredibly close to the window, seemingly just to provoke our poor, agitated dog. Salsa, naturally, became increasingly vocal and restless, barking and pacing. The squirrel even scaled our screen door at one point, providing us with quite the thrilling spectacle and further fueling Salsa’s indignation. It was certainly a memorable day of interspecies antics for both pet and owner!

Okay, I must confess, my obsession with Salsa only deepens with each passing day, and he constantly finds new ways to charm us. He truly outdid himself one evening by snuggling right into my lap during dinner – a rare and incredibly sweet occurrence that almost never happens! It was a moment of pure bliss, a testament to the special, unconditional bond we share with our pets, and a gentle reminder of their unexpected affections. The second photo showcases our creative solution for bringing holiday cheer into our home: our “wall of Christmas.” This year, we opted not to put up our traditional Christmas tree. Last year, Salsa, in a moment of playful mischief (or perhaps curiosity!), managed to chew through the tree’s electrical cord, leaving only a portion of it illuminated. Coupled with the fact that our house is rather compact and space is a precious commodity these days, we decided to get creative. Our festive Christmas wall still brings abundant cheer without occupying valuable floor space, proving that holiday traditions can be adapted to suit any living situation, and sometimes, simplicity can be just as joyful.

Finally, November culminated in a truly delightful Thanksgiving celebration with a few cherished friends. The house was filled with warmth, endless laughter, and the irresistible aroma of a festive feast. Salsa, as expected, was an absolute hit, charming everyone with his playful antics and affectionate demeanor, always ready for a pet or a playful nudge. We indulged in a delicious spread of Thanksgiving classics, from roasted turkey to all the beloved trimmings, followed by an energetic and highly competitive round of Catch Phrase, which always guarantees hilarious moments and friendly rivalry. It was truly a blessing and a joy to share this special holiday with friends, creating new memories and reaffirming the profound importance of community and chosen family in our lives. These gatherings are truly the heart of the holiday season, making it all the more meaningful and memorable.
Opening Up: Reflecting on November’s Blessings and Holiday Intentions
November proved to be a wonderfully busy month, yet in the best possible way, filled with both personal and professional growth. As I shared last month, I’ve embarked on a new and exciting journey into portrait photography, and this past month allowed me to truly dive in, completing a handful of inspiring sessions. Shifting my lens from static food shots to dynamic human subjects has been an incredibly rewarding experience, bringing me an immense amount of joy and creative satisfaction. There’s something truly magical and deeply personal about capturing genuine emotions, fleeting expressions, and authentic moments in people’s lives. The smiles that light up my clients’ faces when I show them a sneak peek on the back of my camera, or the sweet, appreciative comments they generously share once they see their finalized photos – these are the powerful moments that fuel my passion and confirm that this is a path I deeply resonate with. It’s a burgeoning passion that I would absolutely love to nurture and grow into a larger, more established business, should it align with the Lord’s divine plans and open doors for me. The creative challenge and the personal connection formed during these sessions are invaluable, reinforcing my love for this craft.
On a more personal note, this season has presented me with a significant area for introspection and spiritual growth: navigating recurring feelings of bitterness and stress. In years past, it’s a candid truth that the holiday season has often been my least favorite time of the year. This is a confession that, as a believer, I’ve sometimes felt immense guilt in admitting, as there’s an expectation to be perpetually joyous. There’s a societal and often self-imposed pressure to be perpetually brimming with “Christmas spirit” and unbridled joy. Yet, truthfully, I often found myself feeling overwhelmed, burdened by obligations, and far from the joyful ideal. This internal conflict between external expectation and personal reality has been a recurring theme, often leaving me feeling inadequate during a time that is supposed to be celebratory.
However, this year, I’m approaching the holiday season with a renewed and intentional mindset, striving for a deeper connection. My focus has shifted dramatically to mindfulness, specifically centering on the true essence of this sacred time: Jesus. Instead of succumbing to the pressure to force a superficial “Christmas spirit” that often feels fleeting and performative, I am actively seeking and finding my deepest, most enduring joy in contemplating the profound significance of Jesus’ birth. This reflection isn’t just a fleeting thought; it’s a deliberate, heartfelt meditation on the incredible gift of His arrival, and an overflowing thankfulness for His sacrifice that has opened the path for me to have a personal, transformative relationship with Him. By intentionally turning my focus and heart towards Him, I am discovering a deep-rooted, abiding joy that transcends the temporary, often ephemeral excitement of the seasonal festivities. This spiritual anchor provides a much more stable and authentic source of happiness, one that isn’t dependent on external circumstances or societal expectations, but rather on an internal peace.
Now, let’s be absolutely clear: this shift in focus doesn’t magically make me immune to the practical challenges and emotional complexities of the season, nor does it imply I’m flawlessly embodying perpetual joy. Far from it. The holiday season still undeniably feels busy, often weighted down by a myriad of obligations, both perceived and real. There are still countless “Christmas-y” activities and traditions that I find myself drawn to, almost as if attempting to fill a void or “patch the whole” in my heart with external distractions. The desire to participate in all the festive fun is still very much present, and the inherent busyness of this time of year remains a tangible reality. The struggle is real, and the pursuit of a simpler, more meaningful Christmas is an ongoing process of conscious choices, not a destination easily reached. It requires constant recalibration and intentionality to truly stay grounded in my renewed focus amidst the flurry of activities.
What my heart truly aches for, however, is a simpler Christmas. A season characterized by less hype, fewer overwhelming parties, reduced travel stress, and a significant lightening of expectations. I’m actively learning a crucial lesson: that I cannot genuinely enjoy this sacred season by impulsively saying “yes” to every single invitation, every social gathering, or every perceived obligation that comes my way. More importantly, I am learning the profound liberation that comes with being able to confidently and graciously say “no.” By consciously choosing to say “no” to the incessant demands of busyness and the overwhelming pressure to participate in everything, I am paradoxically creating more invaluable space within myself. This newfound space allows me to more fully and wholeheartedly say “yes” to Jesus. My “yes” in this context signifies a deliberate choice to grant my heart the invaluable time it needs to quietly sit with Him, to intimately reflect on, and truly celebrate His miraculous birth this season. It’s about recognizing and internalizing how that singular, pivotal event fundamentally changed the world, and by extension, my own life. This intentional slowing down, this conscious prioritization of spiritual over societal demands, is leading me towards a much more peaceful, profound, and authentically joyful Christmas experience.
