My second trimester recap is finally here, a little later than planned, as I’m already well into my third trimester at 32 weeks! The journey through pregnancy is truly a whirlwind, and each stage brings its own unique set of experiences and transformations. If you’re just catching up, you can read my first trimester recap here, which detailed the initial challenges and adjustments. As I transitioned into the second trimester, I held onto so much hope that the notorious early pregnancy symptoms would soon fade, and thankfully, that hope became a reality.
The moment I hit 13 weeks, I was undeniably optimistic, almost expecting an immediate shift in how I felt. While it wasn’t quite instantaneous, around 15 weeks, a wave of relief washed over me. The persistent nausea and challenging food aversions, which had become my constant companions, finally began to disappear – a truly liberating experience that I thanked Jesus for daily! This newfound physical comfort allowed me to gradually ease back into my normal routines, reconnect with activities I loved, and start truly embracing the miracle of pregnancy. The “honeymoon phase” of pregnancy, as many call the second trimester, was finally beginning to unfold, promising more energy and a fresh perspective on this incredible journey to motherhood.

Physical Transformations and Wellbeing
One of the most significant changes during my second trimester was the resurgence of my energy levels, which allowed me to resume my exercise routine. I was thrilled to get back into spinning and weight lifting, activities that not only kept me physically strong but also contributed immensely to my mental well-being. Maintaining a consistent workout schedule throughout pregnancy has been incredibly beneficial; it helps manage typical discomforts, boosts my mood, and prepares my body for the demands of labor. I’m profoundly thankful that I’ve been able to continue feeling good and strong during my workouts, adapting exercises as my body changed and always listening to what felt right.
My baby bump officially “popped” around 20-22 weeks, transforming from a subtle roundness to an undeniable sign of pregnancy. This stage felt like a real milestone, visibly marking the progress of my pregnancy journey. Suddenly, my existing maternity sweatpants, which I thought would last me longer, became too snug, prompting a necessary wardrobe update to accommodate my growing belly. It was a joyful moment, finally looking unequivocally pregnant rather than just having eaten a large meal! The feeling of my belly expanding was a constant reminder of the incredible life growing within me, bringing with it a mix of excitement and gentle pressure.
A major highlight of this trimester was our 20-week ultrasound. This appointment was particularly special because, due to COVID-19 restrictions, Ryan hadn’t been allowed to attend any of my previous OB appointments. His presence made the experience so much more profound. It was such a relief to see our baby girl healthy and thriving, albeit a little small, measuring around the 35th percentile for weight. While we had confirmed she was a girl through early blood testing at around 11 weeks, seeing her on the screen and hearing the sonographer confirm it again solidified the reality. It was an incredibly emotional and reassuring moment, seeing her little features and knowing she was doing well.
The day after our 20-week ultrasound brought another magical first: I started feeling distinct flutters, finally able to unequivocally distinguish them as my baby’s movements. It’s a sensation unlike any other, often described as tiny bubbles or butterflies, and it’s truly one of the most heartwarming parts of pregnancy. At the ultrasound, I also learned that I have an anterior placenta, meaning the placenta is positioned on the front wall of my uterus, acting as a cushion between the baby and the outside of my belly. This often explains why it can take longer to feel movements distinctly, and it certainly resonated with my experience. It was a few more weeks, perhaps around 24-26 weeks, before Ryan was finally able to feel her kicks from the outside, a moment of shared joy and connection that brought us even closer.

As my belly continued to grow, I began to experience more belly stretching pressure, often accompanied by round ligament pain, especially after long periods on my feet. To alleviate some of this discomfort, I frequently wore my belly support band, particularly when I was testing and photographing recipes. This band became a daily essential, offering gentle compression and much-needed relief, allowing me to stay active and productive without excessive strain. It truly made a difference in my ability to manage the physical demands of my work and daily activities.
This period of increased energy and reduced discomfort was a blessing, as it allowed me to get significantly ahead on my work. I was able to test and photograph a substantial number of new recipes, which was a major goal. My intention was to build a strong stockpile of content so that I could fully focus on preparing for our baby’s arrival and cherish my maternity leave without the added pressure of creating new material. This proactive approach helped me feel more organized and less stressed about the upcoming transition into motherhood.
Despite the renewed energy, some everyday tasks certainly became more challenging. Putting on my tennis shoes, for instance, transformed into an Olympic-level feat! I now strategically keep my shoes near the stairs so I can prop my leg up on a step, but even then, it feels like a workout in itself just to get them laced up. Similarly, I noticed I would get winded much more easily when walking up our stairs, a gentle reminder that my body was working hard to support both myself and our growing little one. These small adaptations became part of the new normal, adding a touch of humor and humility to my daily routine.
Culinary Journeys and Cravings
The second trimester was a culinary awakening after the first trimester’s restrictive food aversions. It felt like a massive relief to enjoy food again without a hint of nausea. My pregnancy cravings truly blossomed during this time, creating some interesting and sometimes unexpected culinary desires. Some of my absolute favorites included the intensely cheesy crunch of Cheetos, the tangy, cool ranch flavor of Doritos, and the savory delight of pesto bacon and tomato omelettes. Beyond the savory, I was thrilled to find that sweets started sounding appealing again – a welcome return to a more balanced palate!
Both Ryan and I observed that my palate became surprisingly more adventurous in the second trimester. I began to enjoy foods and flavors that I typically wouldn’t gravitate towards, a delightful shift from my usual preferences. For example, I developed a new appreciation for certain cheeses and indulged in creamy white sauce pasta dishes – things I rarely craved before. In general, I found myself much more agreeable to whatever Ryan would suggest for dinner, leading us to try out a variety of new dishes. To our pleasant surprise, many of these culinary experiments turned out to be huge hits, expanding our usual dinner rotation and making meal times an exciting exploration for both of us. It was a fun way to bond and discover new favorites together.

Restful Nights and Vivid Dreams
Compared to the occasional sleeplessness of the first trimester and the anticipated challenges of the third, I was still sleeping pretty well during the second trimester. This period offered a sweet spot for restful nights, largely thanks to my beloved pregnancy pillow. This incredible invention became my constant companion, providing unparalleled support for my growing belly, aching back, and weary hips. I honestly don’t know how I would have managed without it; it’s become such an indispensable part of my nighttime routine that I’m not sure I ever want to give that thing up, even post-pregnancy!
However, it wasn’t always perfectly smooth sailing. Occasionally, there would be a few nights where I’d find myself laying awake for a couple of hours, restless and flipping from side to side, inevitably having to get up to pee multiple times. These brief interruptions were a gentle reminder of the physiological changes happening, but once I managed to drift back to sleep, I typically slept soundly and deeply. Another common pregnancy phenomenon that emerged during this trimester was having vivid dreams almost every night. These dreams ranged from utterly bizarre to incredibly realistic, often leaving a lasting impression and sometimes sparking interesting conversations with Ryan over breakfast. They added another layer of intrigue to my pregnancy experience, making even sleep an adventure.
Nesting and Nursery Preparations
Once I started feeling better and my energy levels rebounded, we enthusiastically began tackling some much-anticipated projects around the house, driven by that powerful nesting instinct. The nursery was our primary focus, and seeing it transform from our old “puzzle room” to a baby haven was incredibly rewarding. We started by painting a beautiful accent wall in the nursery, opting for the serene and earthy “SW Artichoke” green color, which creates a calming and natural atmosphere for our little one. This immediately set the tone for the room, making it feel more like a dedicated space for our baby girl.
Next on the list was assembling the baby furniture. Ryan and I worked together to build the crib, dresser, and closet organizer. It was a tangible step towards welcoming our baby, and each screw tightened and panel assembled brought us closer to imagining her in her own room. We even got creative and built a charming bow organizer to hold all of baby’s adorable bows, adding a sweet and personalized touch to her space. It felt incredibly satisfying to see the room come together piece by piece, filling it with love and anticipation. While I felt I was still able to keep up with the house cleaning during this period, I must admit, that particular pace has slowed down a little now as I move deeper into the third trimester!

Cherished Moments and Growing Anticipation
The second trimester truly flew by, living up to its reputation as the “dream” trimester. The return of my energy, the disappearance of morning sickness, and the overall feeling of well-being made it a joy. With renewed vitality, we enthusiastically plunged into baby preparations. We started delving into various baby books, devouring information on everything from newborn care to sleep training. Our research into baby items intensified, leading us to carefully curate our baby registry. This stage felt so productive, filled with purposeful activities that brought us closer to meeting our little one.
This trimester also encompassed two major holidays: Thanksgiving and Christmas. I distinctly remember feeling incredibly excited and grateful to be feeling so much better, allowing me to fully enjoy Thanksgiving dinner and all the festive celebrations without any discomfort. Being able to participate in and savor these special family moments while pregnant was a true blessing. We also took advantage of several Black Friday baby deals, strategically purchasing some essential items for the nursery and practical gear for her arrival, ensuring we were both prepared and budget-conscious.
I recall feeling a keen sense of impatience to feel those first delicate baby wiggles, eagerly anticipating every flutter. It’s funny how things change – as I type this now, our baby girl is doing full-on flips and enthusiastically jumping on my bladder, making me occasionally wish she’d settle down just a little! Her movements definitely became much stronger and more frequent towards the end of the second trimester, evolving from gentle flutters to undeniable kicks and rolls that were visible from the outside. Each movement, whether gentle or strong, served as a powerful reminder of the vibrant life growing inside me.
Through all these experiences, I’ve truly cherished this time with Ryan. Witnessing his transition into a father-to-be has been one of the most heartwarming aspects of my pregnancy journey. He’s been incredibly engaged, listening to various baby and parent podcasts during his runs, and he’s always excited to share new insights or tips he’s learned. His dedication to learning and preparing, his unwavering support, and his genuine excitement for our baby girl have made me fall even more deeply in love with him. I’ve been able to see him grow as a husband and as an expectant father, and our bond has undoubtedly deepened as we navigate this incredible path together. We are both eagerly looking forward to what the third trimester holds and, of course, to finally meeting our precious baby girl.
