October Adventures: A Cozy Peek Into Our Kitchen and Beyond
Welcome back to another edition of “Out of the Kitchen,” where we pull back the curtain on our daily lives, sharing the moments that make up our month beyond the recipes and projects. October has been a wonderful blend of autumn coziness, productive home improvements, exciting culinary experiments, and meaningful personal reflections. Join us as we recount the highlights of our recent adventures, from tackling garden dilemmas to exploring charming Michigan towns and deepening our faith. We believe in sharing not just the perfect plates, but the real, sometimes messy, and always joyful journey of life, inviting you into our world with honesty and warmth.
Our Furry Friends and Daily Delights
Life is always better with a little four-legged companionship, and our sweet cat continues to bring endless smiles to our home. Who can resist the charm of a cat playfully peeking out from a backpack? These unexpected moments of playfulness truly brighten our days and serve as a wonderful reminder to find joy and amusement in the simple things. Our cat, with his unique personality, has become an integral part of our family narrative, making even ordinary moments feel special.

Beyond our furry family members, our mornings often kick off with a familiar, comforting routine. Our cat loves to be close, especially during breakfast. There’s something so endearing about him sitting right beside me as I enjoy my morning salsa and breakfast – a little tradition that brings a gentle, predictable start to each day. It’s these small, consistent moments of connection, a shared quiet time, that weave a beautiful tapestry of our everyday life, grounding us before the day’s activities begin.
Home & Garden Projects: Tackling Autumn Tasks
A Major Lawn Repair Project
October often means preparing the home and garden for the colder months, and this year was no exception. We embarked on a somewhat major lawn repair project that turned out to be quite an undertaking, consuming a significant chunk of our time and effort. We discovered our sprinkler system was broken, but pinpointing the exact location of the issue was like finding a needle in a haystack. This led to us digging numerous spots across the yard, turning our once-pristine green space into a temporary archaeological site, until we finally located the problematic pipe. The frustration of multiple false starts slowly gave way to immense relief and gratitude when my incredibly handy husband managed to skillfully diagnose and fix the issue! It’s moments like these that truly highlight the value of teamwork and practical skills in maintaining a home. This project, while challenging, ultimately gave us a deep sense of accomplishment and ensured our lawn will be ready for greener, healthier days ahead when spring arrives, free from the worry of a faulty irrigation system.

Brightening Our Living Space: The Lighting Dilemma
Another ongoing home improvement quest involves our living room lighting. We’re eager to enhance the ambiance and functionality of this central space, but our plans to simply add a light kit to our existing ceiling fan have proven to be far more complex than initially anticipated. What seemed like a straightforward upgrade has become a bit of a puzzle, requiring more research, contemplation, and perhaps even some professional advice. Home projects often come with unforeseen hurdles and unexpected complexities, but we’re committed to finding the perfect solution to effectively illuminate our living space. It’s a work in progress, and we’ll certainly keep you updated on our ‘to be determined’ lighting situation as we navigate the various options and challenges to achieve our desired outcome.

Decking the Halls: Our Halloween Home Decor
October wouldn’t be complete without fully embracing the festive spirit of Halloween! Decorating for holidays is one of my absolute favorite activities, offering a creative outlet and a wonderful way to bring seasonal joy into our home. This year, our house was beautifully decked out for the spooky season, transforming our living spaces and exterior into a festive wonderland. From charmingly carved pumpkins to playful spooky elements, the process of transforming our home brings such joy and a touch of whimsy. It’s a cherished tradition that we look forward to building upon each year, slowly growing our collection of holiday treasures and creating an increasingly festive atmosphere for friends and family alike. The anticipation of adding new pieces and seeing our decorative vision come to life is truly an exciting part of our autumn routine.

Culinary Creations & Kitchen Adventures
As I mentioned last month, Ryan and I have been thoroughly enjoying our increased time together in the kitchen, experimenting with new recipes and perfecting old favorites. October brought some truly delicious and satisfying culinary endeavors, highlighting our shared passion for food and cooking.
Homemade Pizza Night: A Delicious Collaboration
One of our recent culinary triumphs was a delightful homemade pizza night. I crafted a delicious gluten-free pizza specifically for myself, ensuring it fit my dietary needs without compromising on flavor or texture. Meanwhile, Ryan took on the challenge of perfecting his regular pizza crust. He’s a true perfectionist when it comes to cooking and baking, and while I thoroughly enjoyed my creation, he’s still meticulously refining his technique, always striving for the ideal crispy crust and balanced toppings. There’s something incredibly satisfying about creating a meal from scratch, tailored exactly to our preferences and tastes. This shared activity has become a cherished part of our evenings, fostering connection, collaboration, and culinary creativity in our kitchen.

Sweet Treats for Loved Ones: Peanut Butter Blossoms
Baking for family is always a joy and a wonderful way to express affection, and this month I had the pleasure of mailing a special batch of birthday cookies to my nephew, Eli. He specifically requested classic peanut butter blossoms, which happen to be one of my all-time favorites too! There’s a wonderful warmth and connection that comes from knowing a sweet treat, baked with love, can bring a smile to a loved one’s face, even from a distance. These small gestures make family connections feel stronger and remind us of the simple pleasures of sharing joy.

Behind the Scenes: Monster Cookies & Anticipation
Speaking of cookies, we also had an exciting “monster cookie” photoshoot behind the scenes this month! These cookies are absolutely loaded with deliciousness – think oats, peanut butter, chocolate chips, and M&M’s – and I can promise you, they are going to be a massive hit when the recipe finally drops. The recipe is currently being meticulously finalized and will be hitting the blog in just a few short weeks. Get ready for a treat that will satisfy every craving and become a new favorite in your baking repertoire! This creative process, from developing and perfecting a recipe to artfully capturing its beauty through photography, is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable parts of my blogging journey.

Ryan’s Delicious Stir-Fry: A Weeknight Favorite
Ryan’s culinary skills aren’t limited to just pizza and baking! He whipped up an incredibly delicious stir-fry for dinner one evening, proving once again his versatility and talent in the kitchen. It was packed with fresh, crisp vegetables and perfectly seasoned lean protein, making for a healthy, vibrant, and utterly satisfying meal. We’re always grateful for his contributions to our dinner table, making weeknights both easy and flavorful. His ability to create quick, nutritious, and incredibly tasty meals is a huge asset, especially on busy evenings.

The Art of Pecan Pralines: A Sweet Challenge
I’ve also embarked on a new and somewhat challenging baking adventure: learning how to make classic Southern pecan pralines. And let me tell you, they are “testy”! This traditional confection requires a delicate balance of precision and patience, and I’ve certainly had my share of attempts, learning moments, and even a few delicious failures along the way. It’s a tricky balance of achieving the perfect caramelization and ensuring the right texture – not too crumbly, not too sticky. But I’m determined to master it! I’m excited to put together a comprehensive blog post detailing my tips, tricks, and even my mishaps, so you can learn alongside me and hopefully avoid some of my early struggles. It’s all part of the rewarding journey of exploring new recipes and expanding my baking skills!

Halloween Fun at Work: Spreading Cheer
Halloween isn’t just for kids, and Ryan proved that by bringing a whole batch of fun, festive Halloween cupcakes to work for his coworkers. It was a delightful way to spread some seasonal cheer and lighten the mood in the workplace. It’s a wonderful reminder that celebrating holidays, no matter your age, can bring smiles, foster a sense of community, and create enjoyable shared moments. Sharing homemade treats is one of the best ways to connect with others and brighten their day, making even a regular workday a little more special.

Moments of Leisure & Exploration
Our Home Movie Night Setup: Dreaming Bigger
When it’s time to unwind, nothing beats a cozy movie night at home, especially as the evenings grow cooler. We’re incredibly fortunate that the previous owners of our house left us a fantastic setup – a large projector screen already installed in the basement, complete with sturdy hooks! This has always been an exciting feature that sparked our imagination, and we’re now seriously considering taking the plunge and investing in a projector to complete our ultimate home cinema experience. Imagine comfortable blankets, delicious homemade snacks, and a massive screen right in the comfort of our own home – it sounds like the perfect way to spend those chilly autumn and winter evenings, creating unforgettable cinematic moments.

A Small Victory: Finding Free Air for Tires
Sometimes, the smallest victories bring the greatest satisfaction and a genuine sense of triumph. This month, I finally discovered where to get free air for my car tires in our city! For anyone who has ever faced the frustration of needing to pay $1.25 for something as basic as air, you know this is, in fact, a big deal. It’s a small detail, but finding these practical, money-saving solutions can make everyday errands just a little bit smoother, less irritating, and more budget-friendly. Every little bit of savings and convenience counts in the grand scheme of managing daily life!

Embracing Winter Decor: A Holiday Craft Market Find
Getting ready for the festive season is always a joy, and October offers the perfect opportunity to start thinking about winter decor. I recently visited a charming local holiday craft market and stumbled upon the perfect addition to our winter porch decor: beautiful faux wooden skis! They’re such a quaint and welcoming touch, instantly adding a rustic, cozy, and seasonal feel to our entryway that I absolutely adore. Supporting local artisans and discovering unique, handcrafted pieces that truly enhance our home’s aesthetic is always a treat, making our home feel even more personalized and inviting as the seasons change.

Exploring Frankenmuth, Michigan: A Taste of Bavaria
One of our most memorable outings this month was an enchanting afternoon spent in Frankenmuth, Michigan, with Ryan’s mom. It was our very first visit to this delightful town, often affectionately referred to as “Michigan’s Little Bavaria,” and it absolutely charmed us from the moment we arrived. The town’s unique Bavarian-style architecture, festive atmosphere, and abundance of specialty shops created an unforgettable, almost whimsical experience. Of course, no trip to Frankenmuth would be complete without stopping in all the candy stores! It was particularly fascinating to watch them making large batches of fresh fudge right before our eyes, a truly sweet spectacle that added to the town’s unique charm. We were so captivated by its unique character and welcoming ambiance that we’re already enthusiastically planning a return trip – there’s still so much more to explore and enjoy in this picturesque and delicious destination.

Capturing Memories: Photography Sessions
Photography is a true passion of mine, and October offered some wonderful opportunities to indulge in it. I had the genuine pleasure of taking portraits for our dear friends, Steph and Neil. They were among the very first friends we made after moving to Michigan, and we are incredibly grateful for how quickly and warmly they embraced us, welcoming us into their lives and helping us build a community here. Their session was a beautiful reminder of how much I love capturing the authentic personalities, emotions, and connections of people through my lens. There’s a unique joy and fulfillment in creating lasting visual memories for those you care about, preserving a moment in time forever.

In a fun and somewhat humorous twist, Ryan and I also had our own photos taken this October! And since we’re all friends here, I’ll let you in on a little secret: we pulled off an outfit re-do. Yes, we wore (almost) the exact same outfits we sported for pictures taken three years ago! It was a nostalgic, amusing, and entirely intentional choice, highlighting how far we’ve come as a couple while also celebrating the enduring nature of our journey together. It’s always good to look back at these captured moments and see the progression of our lives, acknowledging both the changes and the constants in our relationship.

Pumpkin Carving Fun: A Feline Masterpiece
Of course, no October would be truly complete without the quintessential autumn activity of pumpkin carving! It’s a cherished seasonal tradition that brings out our playful side and adds a touch of personalized charm to our fall decorations. And if you know us and our love for our furry friend, you probably won’t be surprised in the slightest that our pumpkin creation this year was, indeed, a charming cat! There’s something so satisfying about transforming a simple pumpkin into a temporary work of art, even if it’s just a silly, smiling cat face, bringing a unique character to our doorstep.

Opening Up: Reflections on October and Beyond
October truly has been a remarkably good month, offering a much-needed rhythm of life. After the intense and somewhat overwhelming busyness of September, this past month brought a welcome sense of relaxation and equilibrium, yet it remained incredibly productive and fulfilling in all the best ways. We managed to tackle a significant amount of yard work, chipping away at tasks to prepare our outdoor spaces for winter. However, the never-ending cascade of autumn leaves in our backyard serves as a gentle, persistent reminder that the raking saga is far from over! It’s a seasonal rhythm we’re learning to embrace, finding beauty even in the recurring chores.
Community and Faith: Deepening Connections
Beyond the confines of our home, we’ve found ourselves becoming even more deeply connected within our church community. We’ve been actively involved in serving, which has been a wonderful way to give back and meet new people, and we recently joined a new life group. This group has already brought so much joy, fellowship, and meaningful conversation into our lives. Our life group has enthusiastically discussed organizing a holiday house decorating contest, and you can bet I’m absolutely “all about that!” It’s these vibrant connections and shared experiences that truly enrich our lives and create a supportive, loving network. Finding our place and feeling truly rooted in a new community has been a beautiful journey, and we’re so grateful for the growing friendships and spiritual nourishment we’ve discovered.
Blogging and Business Growth: A New Chapter
On the professional front, things are genuinely picking up with my blog, and I’m thrilled about the momentum. It feels a bit like Santa and I are sharing the same busy season, with a flurry of activity, exciting projects, and new opportunities on the horizon! A significant milestone this month was investing in a new camera. It feels like both a huge, momentous deal and a natural, necessary progression at the same time. It’s hard to believe it’s been four years since I first got my DSLR, and upgrading to a second, more advanced camera has already proven invaluable, especially while filming complex video recipes. The ability to switch between cameras seamlessly, capture different angles, and significantly improve overall content quality has been a genuine game-changer for enhancing the blog’s offerings and delivering even better, more engaging resources to you, my wonderful readers. This investment marks an exciting new chapter in my creative journey.
Prioritizing the Spiritual Journey: A Call to Realign
However, amidst this exciting growth and increased pace, I’ve noticed a critical shift in my personal life: I’ve been inadvertently setting aside less and less time for my spiritual practice, particularly for spending focused time with Jesus. This realization has been a profound and humbling one. As much as I love what I do with the blog and cherish all our life experiences, I know deep down that I need to make time with Him a non-negotiable priority. My deepest desire is to be more intimately connected with Him, to nurture that essential, life-giving relationship above all else. There are certain seasons, especially when running a business and feeling the pressure to constantly produce, where I can feel myself trying to keep everything afloat purely in my own strength. This often manifests in a subtle but significant way: tending to business matters first thing in the morning, rather than deliberately starting my day with prayer or delving into His Word. It’s a deviation from the spiritual foundation I strive to maintain.
The truth is, I need to intentionally choose Him, every single day, with purpose and conviction. He is the ultimate giver of life, and while the fleeting happiness found in worldly achievements, temporary pleasures, and material things can be momentarily satisfying, it is only through Him that everlasting joy, peace, and true contentment can truly be found. That’s precisely what I yearn for – a life overflowing with His joy, a life that purposefully and wholeheartedly glorifies Him in every aspect, from the biggest decisions to the smallest daily actions. This October has been a powerful reminder to realign my focus, to actively seek His presence, and to let my spiritual foundation guide all my endeavors, ensuring that even in the busiest of times, my heart remains anchored in unwavering faith and purpose.
