October Adventures: A Month of Fall Fun, DIY Projects, and Culinary Delights

October was an incredibly vibrant month, brimming with autumn adventures, creative projects, and some heartwarming moments. From streamlining our social media presence to tackling home repairs, indulging in delicious fall cooking, and embarking on a quest for the perfect sugar cookie, it was a period of both productivity and cherished memories. We kicked off October with a major productivity boost, dedicating two full days to scheduling all my Instagram and Facebook posts for the next 75 days. This “batching” method is an absolute game-changer; it frees up so much mental energy not having to decide daily what to share across social media platforms. It’s a strategy I highly recommend for anyone looking to optimize their content creation workflow and maintain consistency without the daily scramble. After all that digital work, it was wonderful to unwind with a comforting homemade meal. Ryan, ever the culinary wizard in our household, impressed us by preparing butternut squash soup for the very first time. The rich, creamy texture and the subtle sweetness of the squash perfectly captured the essence of fall, warming us from the inside out. It was a delicious reminder of the simple joys of autumn cooking.
One of the quintessential autumn traditions, a visit to the pumpkin patch, was an absolute must. I had the pleasure of spending a delightful day there with my friend Kirstin and her adorable little one. Ryan discovered that we had a few shingles missing from our roof, creating a direct opening into the attic. It was a concerning find, but thankfully, the issue has since been promptly and successfully resolved. It’s a good reminder that even amidst all the fun, home maintenance is an ongoing, essential task.

I utilized readily available materials – toilet paper and paper towel tubes – to craft these enchanting decorations. The process was surprisingly simple and incredibly rewarding. With a little paint, LED tea lights, and some string, these ordinary cardboard tubes transformed into magical, ethereal candles that looked absolutely fantastic. When displayed at night, especially in a dimly lit room or outdoor space, they cast a wonderfully eerie glow, perfectly setting the mood for the Halloween season. Our sweet furry companion, Salsa, is always curious about what’s happening, especially when tools are involved! One afternoon, she was absolutely fascinated, intently watching Ryan as he meticulously worked on fixing my bracelet. It always amuses me how many tools seem to be required for such a small, delicate task – a true testament to Ryan’s patience and precision! Following this moment of domestic tinkering, I embarked on a personal mission: perfecting a new cut-out sugar cookie recipe for the blog. This wasn’t a quick endeavor; it turned into an intensive, week-long process of testing, retesting, and fine-tuning. Developing a recipe that is not only delicious but also holds its shape beautifully and is easy for everyone to replicate takes time, dedication, and a lot of trial and error. Each batch brought me closer to the ideal texture and flavor, and the anticipation of sharing it with all of you kept me motivated through every step of the journey.
And after all that dedicated testing and countless batches, I’m thrilled to announce that I finally created one truly awesome cut-out sugar cookie recipe! The satisfaction of reaching that perfect balance of crisp edges, tender centers, and buttery flavor was immense. Of course, no cut-out cookie project is complete without an array of festive decorations. This leads us to the second photo – a peek into my “sprinkle bins.” Yes, you read that right, bins! Because when you’re deeply immersed in the world of baking and decorating, a single jar of sprinkles simply won’t do. I often joke, “Oh what, you don’t have BINS of sprinkles?” It’s a delightful indulgence, and having such a vibrant collection makes the decorating process even more joyful and creatively limitless.
In the middle of October, we seized the opportunity for a mini-escape, taking a much-needed Friday off to drive up to northern Michigan. Our destination was the famous “Tunnel of Trees,” a renowned scenic drive particularly celebrated for its breathtaking fall colors. The anticipation was high as we embarked on our journey, and indeed, the drive up was spectacular, filled with stretches of road lined with trees ablaze in brilliant hues of red, orange, and gold. It was a true feast for the eyes, offering countless picturesque moments. However, once we reached the actual “tunnel” – which is an approximately 20-mile stretch of winding road – we discovered that the leaves hadn’t quite reached their peak autumnal glory yet. Many were still a vibrant green or a mild yellow, hinting at the grandeur to come. While it wasn’t the fiery spectacle we had hoped for, the experience was still incredibly enjoyable. It was wonderful to simply take the day off, disconnect from our usual routines, and spend quality time together, appreciating the natural beauty around us, regardless of the precise shade of the foliage. The journey itself was just as fulfilling as the destination.

Naturally, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to have Salsa’s adorable face emblazoned all over it! The result was absolutely charming and brought a huge smile to my face. It’s such a fun, personal touch that makes kitchen tasks a little brighter. Custom items like these are fantastic ways to infuse personality into everyday objects and make wonderful gifts. Speaking of the kitchen, I also made a significant adjustment to my food video shooting location this month. After some experimentation, I discovered that a particular corner of my home, blessed with multiple windows, offers truly exceptional natural light. This setup is proving to be a game-changer for filming food videos, providing consistent, soft illumination that really makes the dishes pop. Finding the right light is crucial for food photography and videography, and I’m excited about the improved quality this new spot brings to my content.
One of the most heartwarming moments of October was receiving the sweetest gift from one of my incredible Instagram followers, Rebekah, all the way from Colorado! Her thoughtful gesture truly touched my heart and served as a beautiful reminder of the wonderful community we’ve built online. It’s these personal connections and expressions of kindness that make sharing my life and work so incredibly rewarding. Thank you again, Rebekah, for your generosity! October also marks Pastor Appreciation Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the invaluable service and dedication of our spiritual leaders. Our life group was honored to participate in this tradition by blessing our pastor and his wife with a gift card for a laundry service. It’s a small but practical way to show our gratitude and offer them a moment of relief and convenience, acknowledging all the tireless work they do for our community.
As October drew to a close, our backyard transformed into a breathtaking autumn spectacle. The leaves finally fell, creating a thick carpet of vibrant yellow and gold that seemed to glow in the late afternoon sun. It was absolutely beautiful, a picturesque scene straight out of a fall postcard. And somehow, through sheer luck or perhaps a cunning negotiation, I managed to escape the annual leaf-raking duties with Ryan this year! A small victory worth celebrating, allowing me more time to simply admire the beauty without the back-breaking work. Speaking of celebrations, another delicious dinner graced our table: a fantastic ginger chicken stir-fry served with cauliflower rice. This meal was packed with fresh flavors and textures, proving that healthy eating can also be incredibly satisfying and easy to prepare. It’s a perfect weeknight dinner option that always leaves us feeling nourished and happy.
Ryan continued his culinary streak, surprising me with yet another awesome dinner! I confess, I was initially a bit skeptical about this particular dish – a one-skillet sausage, white bean, and gnocchi recipe from fellow food blogger, Chelsea. However, my doubts were quickly dispelled with the first bite. It was incredibly flavorful, comforting, and surprisingly easy for a one-skillet meal. It’s always a treat when a new recipe exceeds expectations and becomes an instant favorite. Alongside our delightful dinners, we also embraced the festive spirit of Halloween with our adorable ghostie pumpkin. This charming little decoration added a whimsical touch to our home, perfectly complementing the spooky season without being too scary. Simple, sweet, and perfectly autumnal, it captured the fun essence of Halloween.
The floating candles, which were a fun DIY project earlier in the month, truly came to life once darkness fell. Observing them glow and flicker at night was absolutely enchanting, transforming our space into a subtly spooky, magical haven. And speaking of atmospheric transformations, our front porch received a full Halloween makeover! We adorned it with festive decor, creating a welcoming yet slightly eerie entrance for trick-or-treaters and guests.
