Dispelling Doubts: Effortless Holiday Entertaining

When we first introduced the Turkey Fruit Platter, some, including my own family, expressed a bit of skepticism. They worried it would be too time-consuming amidst the myriad of Thanksgiving preparations. However, they soon discovered how truly simple and enjoyable it was, even creating their own versions with impressive results! (You can peek at their delightful creations here!).

If you find yourself experiencing a similar apprehension, perhaps thinking you simply don’t have enough time to craft a beautifully shaped fruit platter when dozens of other Christmas Day tasks loom – from mashing potatoes and carving ham to setting the perfect table – worry no more! We understand the holiday rush, and we’re here to assure you that this Christmas tree fruit platter is designed for maximum impact with minimal effort. In fact, this entire festive creation can be assembled in 30 minutes or less!

To further ease your holiday burden, here are a few brilliant suggestions:

  • Enlist Little Helpers: Recruit your children, nieces, or nephews! This is a fantastic, fun activity for kids of all ages. They’ll love arranging the colorful fruits and feeling like they contributed to the holiday feast. It’s a wonderful way to create lasting Christmas memories.
  • Prepare in Advance: Don’t feel pressured to make it on Christmas Day itself. Assemble the platter the day before and simply cover it tightly with plastic wrap before refrigerating. This way, you can enjoy a stress-free Christmas morning, knowing a stunning and healthy treat is ready to be unveiled.
  • Keep it Simple: Remember, perfection isn’t the goal; joy and healthy eating are! Even a slightly imperfect tree will look charming and inviting.

Crafting Your Edible Christmas Tree: Ingredients and Inspiration

The beauty of this Christmas tree fruit platter lies in its simplicity and the vibrant natural colors of its components. Here’s what you’ll need to create your own:

Essential Ingredients:

  • The Platter: A white platter measuring approximately 15 inches by 10 inches works perfectly as a snowy canvas for your tree.
  • The Star: One crisp apple, from which you’ll cut out two stars using a small star cookie cutter. Having two layers adds a lovely depth to your tree topper, though a single star works just as beautifully. For an alternative, consider a slice of starfruit or pineapple!
  • The Tree Branches (Green): Abundant green grapes. Cutting them in half makes them incredibly easy to arrange and prevents them from rolling around, ensuring a neat, uniform tree shape.
  • Festive “Ornaments” (Red & Black): Whole, juicy raspberries and plump blackberries. These add beautiful bursts of color and texture, mimicking festive ornaments.
  • The “Presents”: Small square and rectangular graham cracker pieces. You’ll also need red or gold string to “tie” these edible gifts.
  • The Tree Trunk: Two round wooden slices laid on their side were used in the original design. However, for an edible trunk, consider pretzel sticks, chocolate-covered raisins, brown M&M’s, or even another rectangular graham cracker piece.
  • Shimmering Snow: A sprinkle of edible gold glitter or gold sprinkles to add a magical touch to your star and the top of your tree.

Assembly Tips for a Picture-Perfect Platter

Achieving a lush, full Christmas tree effect is all about layering. After placing your initial arrangement of fruits, go back and add more of each fruit on top, creating a delightful two-layered tree. This technique gives your platter a wonderful depth and makes it even more appealing.

For the “presents” at the base of your tree, each gift is crafted from two graham cracker pieces to give them a substantial, three-dimensional look. To make the rectangular presents, simply break a large store-bought graham cracker along its pre-scored lines. For the square presents, use a knife to carefully cut down some of the smaller rectangular pieces you just created. Once shaped, tie a small piece of festive red or gold string around each “present” before placing them tie-side down beneath your fruit tree.

As for the tree trunk, while the round wooden slices we used were convenient items we had on hand, feel free to get creative with edible alternatives. Pretzel sticks offer a delightful crunch, chocolate-covered raisins provide a sweet chew, brown M&M’s add a colorful touch, or even a sturdy rectangular graham cracker piece can serve as an excellent base. The goal is to create a visual anchor for your beautiful fruit tree.

With these practical tips and a dash of creativity, you are now fully equipped to craft your very own magnificent Christmas tree fruit platter!

Create a healthy fruit platter for Christmas in the shape of a Christmas tree! Use an apple, grapes, raspberries, blackberries and graham crackers!

Ingredients

  • One apple and a mini star cookie cutter
  • Grapes, washed, dried and halved
  • Raspberries, washed and dried
  • Blackberries, washed and dried
  • 2 store-bought graham crackers, to make rectangular and square presents
  • String (red/gold), for tying the presents
  • Wooden slices or other tree trunk suggestions (e.g., pretzel sticks, chocolate covered raisins, brown M&M’s, or another rectangular graham cracker piece)
  • Gold sprinkles (edible glitter)

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry all of the fruit thoroughly. Cut the grapes in half for easier arrangement.
  2. Slice an apple into rounds. Using a mini star cookie cutter, cut out two stars from the apple slices. Layering them will add dimension to your tree topper.
  3. To begin assembling your Christmas tree, arrange the grapes near the bottom of your platter. Ensure you leave ample space at the very bottom for the tree trunk and presents. For the first layer, starting from the base upwards, create two rows of grapes, followed by one row of raspberries, then two more rows of grapes, one row of blackberries, another two rows of grapes, one row of raspberries, and finally four rows of grapes at the top. As you work, gently taper the fruit arrangement to form the classic Christmas tree shape.
  4. Add a second, slightly smaller layer of fruit directly on top of your first layer. This layer should consist of one row of grapes, one row of raspberries, two rows of grapes, one row of blackberries, two rows of grapes, one row of raspberries, and then three rows of grapes at the very top. This layering technique creates a beautiful, full effect.
  5. Carefully place your apple star(s) at the very pinnacle of your fruit tree.
  6. Position your chosen tree trunk (wooden slices, pretzel sticks, etc.) at the base of the fruit tree.
  7. To prepare the presents, break a large graham cracker into rectangular pieces along its natural lines. Then, use a knife to cut some of these rectangular pieces into squares, ensuring you have enough to make two square and two rectangular presents. Each present should be made up of two graham cracker pieces for added depth. Tie a festive red or gold string around each graham cracker “present” and place them tie-side down on the platter, nestled underneath the tree.
  8. Conclude by sprinkling edible gold glitter or gold sprinkles over the apple star and lightly around the top portion of the fruit tree on the platter for a magical, snow-like finish.
