A September 2018 Kitchen Break

September Unpacked: Our Latest Adventures, Home Updates & Autumnal Joys

Welcome back to another “Out of the Kitchen” update! September was a whirlwind of exciting changes, cozy home projects, heartwarming encounters, and memorable moments. As the vibrant colors of autumn began to paint our landscape, we found ourselves embracing new challenges and cherishing everyday joys. Join us as we reflect on the past month and share all the behind-the-scenes happenings that made it truly special.

Transforming Our Space: Basement Bliss & Store Discoveries

Cozy new gray sectional sofa in a modern, freshly decorated basement living area with throw pillows

September marked a significant milestone in our home improvement journey: the exciting acquisition of a brand-new sectional sofa for our basement! This was a long-anticipated purchase, and we’re absolutely thrilled to report that we managed to stay comfortably within our allocated budget – a real triumph considering how easily one can get carried away amidst the dazzling displays in furniture stores. Our basement, once a vast, somewhat neglected, and admittedly, a bit “spidery” expanse, has now been transformed into a truly inviting and comfortable sanctuary. As the crisp autumn air signals the imminent arrival of winter, we can’t help but dream of completing this cozy haven with a roaring fireplace – perhaps a delightful project for another season! It’s incredible how one piece of furniture can dramatically change the functionality and feel of an entire area, turning an unused space into our new favorite spot for movie nights and relaxation.

Beyond our home, even routine errands brought new adventures. Our local Meijer store underwent a complete overhaul, resulting in every single item being relocated. While initially disorienting – I used to navigate the aisles with my eyes closed! – I’ve since discovered a truly fantastic aspect of the redesign: an abundance of clear, visible gluten-free labels and signs throughout the store. This thoughtful enhancement makes navigating dietary needs so much easier and is a huge win for anyone managing gluten sensitivities, ourselves included. It’s a wonderful example of how change, even when initially challenging, can ultimately bring about incredibly positive and inclusive improvements, making healthy choices more accessible for the community.

Sweet Treats, Community Spirit & Connecting Online

Assortment of homemade treats for a bake sale, including s'mores bars, peanut butter cookies, and monster cookies

Community engagement was a sweet highlight of September. Our church hosted a vibrant “Back to School Bash,” and naturally, contributing a delectable array of goodies for the bake sale was right up my alley! Baking is a profound passion of mine, especially when it’s for a good cause and brings joy to others. I spent hours whipping up a delightful combination of classic and gluten-free treats, ensuring there was something delicious for everyone to enjoy regardless of dietary restrictions. The menu featured irresistible s’mores bars, timeless peanut butter cookies, and festive monster cookies – each batch made with love, care, and a generous sprinkle of autumnal cheer. It’s always rewarding to use my skills to support community events.

On a more personal note, I’ve been making a conscious effort to connect more authentically with my wonderful online community. Ryan captured a spontaneous, candid photo of me this month, which perfectly encapsulated my new initiative. I’m now committed to posting one personal photo each week on my Instagram profile. My goal is to give my incredible followers a more genuine glimpse into the person behind the blog, fostering a deeper connection and sharing more about my everyday life beyond the recipes and home decor features. It’s been a truly rewarding experience to share these candid moments and hear back from so many of you, building a stronger bond with this amazing online family.

Paws-itive Adventures: Cat Sitting & Pet Photography

Two fluffy cats, an orange tabby and a gray tabby, lounging comfortably on a carpet, looking content

Our household welcomed some temporary furry residents this September as we had the absolute pleasure of cat-sitting for our dear friends, Steph and Neil, while they embarked on an exciting international trip. This ten-day adventure into multi-cat ownership was incredibly eye-opening! I quickly learned that our own beloved cat, Salsa, is decidedly less of a “snuggle bug” compared to these two adorable, fluffy kitties. They instantly became my little shadow buddies, following me from room to room, purring contentedly, and showering us with affection. Their sweet dispositions and incredibly soft fur made them an absolute joy to care for. Plus, it was a fantastic opportunity to hone my pet photography skills, capturing their playful personalities and charming expressions. Every click of the camera was a delight, and I ended up with a treasure trove of adorable cat photos, documenting their endearing antics!

Fall Fashion Finds & Home Decor Delights

Embracing the shift in seasons, this month I shared a particularly fun and popular Amazon Fall Try On post. As the temperatures began to dip, it was the perfect time to explore cozy and stylish pieces suitable for cooler weather. I carefully curated and reviewed ten different Amazon fashion items, providing honest feedback and practical styling ideas for each. The overwhelming consensus was positive, with most of the selections proving to be truly fantastic additions to any autumn wardrobe – comfortable, chic, and incredibly budget-friendly. If you’re looking to refresh your fall closet without breaking the bank, or simply seeking inspiration for your seasonal outfits, be sure to check out the full post here for all my top recommendations and styling tips!

A candid moment during a family portrait session outdoors with autumn foliage

September also ushers in one of my absolute favorite times of the year: family portrait season! There’s something incredibly special and deeply rewarding about capturing precious moments and genuine connections for friends and loved ones. Photography, as many of you know, is one of the core passions that fuel this blog, so having the opportunity to step behind the lens and create lasting memories for others brings me immense joy and satisfaction. It’s a true privilege to document these fleeting stages of life, from playful children to loving couples, against the beautiful and vibrant backdrop of autumn, creating heirlooms that families will cherish for years to come.

Back at home, our mischievous furball, Salsa, continued to keep us thoroughly entertained. My beloved fake plant, once a pristine green accent in our living room, became the unwitting target of his playful (and somewhat destructive) curiosity. He developed a peculiar habit of munching on and bending all the grass pieces, only to later *re-gift* them to us in a less palatable form. After a few too many instances, I decided it was time for a drastic intervention: a “plant haircut”! Salsa was utterly fascinated by the snipping process, his curious eyes following every trim with intense concentration. It’s never a dull moment, or a completely intact plant, with our endlessly entertaining furry companion!

Creative Pursuits: From Photography to Polish

Behind the scenes, creativity flowed as I tackled a new challenge in food photography: liquids! Here’s a sneak peek from the apple cider punch photoshoot. Photographing drinks isn’t something I do very often, so it’s always an exciting and fun learning experience to try my hand at new techniques and compositions. The subtle reflections, the vibrant colors, and the delicate effervescence of beverages all present unique considerations compared to solid foods, making it a rewarding photographic endeavor that pushes my creative boundaries. It’s a constant process of learning and refining in the world of content creation.

Speaking of new experiences, I finally decided to try Color Street Nails this month! After seeing a fellow blogger on Instagram rave about them and demonstrate their incredibly easy application, my curiosity was well and truly piqued. And I’m so glad I did – I absolutely love them! For those unfamiliar, Color Street Nails are revolutionary: they are 100% real nail polish, but they come in a dry, adhesive strip form, making them incredibly easy and mess-free to apply, much like a sticker. One of my main frustrations with traditional nail polish has always been the agonizing wait for them to dry, inevitably leading to smudges and ruined manicures. With Color Street, that problem is completely eliminated! I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of more colors in the mail, excited to expand my collection and continue enjoying hassle-free, salon-quality manicures from the comfort of my home.

Outdoor Escapades & Fido Fun

Our beloved feline, Salsa, continues to impress us with his unique talents and playful antics! Ryan has managed to train him to perform an amusing trick: climbing right on top of him to earn a coveted treat. While this might be the extent of his formal training, it’s a testament to Salsa’s cleverness, agility, and the special bond he shares with Ryan. It always brings a smile to our faces to watch their little routine unfold, a charming display of interspecies communication and affection!

Embracing the beautiful September weather, we also ventured out on what we affectionately termed a 5-mile “hike.” Now, let’s be clear – by “hike,” we mean a wonderfully long, invigorating, and picturesque walk through the dense woods, as true mountains are a bit scarce here in Michigan! The serene surroundings, the rustling leaves underfoot, and the fresh, crisp air made for a perfect afternoon escape. We even had a memorable wildlife encounter, spotting a snake gracefully slithering through the underbrush, adding an unexpected thrill to our adventure. After such an extensive woodland exploration, we’re confidently declaring ourselves practically seasoned hikers now, ready for our next outdoor exploration and all the natural beauty Michigan has to offer!

Autumnal Aesthetics: Salsa’s Charm & Porch Perfection

Speaking of Salsa, I can’t resist sharing another adorable picture of him, captured perfectly using the incredible portrait mode on my iPhone X. This feature is truly a game-changer for pet photography, allowing me to highlight his charming features and expressive eyes against a beautifully blurred background, creating a professional-looking shot with ease. He’s such a photogenic little guy, and I love having the technology to capture his personality so vividly!

Our home’s exterior also received a festive September makeover with our charming fall porch decor. Initially, I had adorned the porch exclusively with elegant white pumpkins, aiming for a minimalist and sophisticated autumnal look. However, Ryan, with his keen eye for color and balance, gently suggested adding some vibrant orange pumpkins into the mix. And as usual, he was absolutely right! The addition of those cheerful orange hues provided the perfect pop of color, instantly creating a more inviting, warm, and quintessentially autumnal display. It’s a lovely blend now, featuring a combination of realistic fake white pumpkins and beautifully authentic real orange ones, creating a welcoming and visually appealing gateway to our home that perfectly captures the spirit of the season.

DIY Delights & Halloween Spirit

Beth, Ryan, and Salsa the cat gathered around supplies for homemade candle making on a kitchen counter

This month, we embarked on a brand-new creative endeavor: making homemade candles for the very first time! It was a delightful (and slightly messy) learning experience, filled with laughter and a few unexpected challenges. Salsa, ever the curious supervisor, refused to vacate the counter, intently observing all the fascinating supplies and processes. Naturally, I seized the opportunity for an impromptu “family photo” – a moment of chaotic charm captured forever! While our first batch of candles wasn’t a resounding success (they weren’t super potent in scent, and both unfortunately cracked while cooling), the process itself was incredibly fun and provided valuable lessons. We definitely need a bit more practice, but we’re already looking forward to our next candle-making session to refine our technique and create perfect, beautifully scented candles.

And finally, embracing my favorite holiday with full enthusiasm, our Halloween mantle officially made its debut! Halloween holds a special place in my heart; there’s something magical about the spooky season, and decorating for it is always a joyous occasion. This year’s display is already shaping up nicely with a mix of classic autumnal elements and subtle eerie touches, but I’m contemplating adding even more spooky flair – perhaps a few extra cobwebs artfully draped, some delightfully creepy spiders, and maybe even a flickering potion bottle or two to truly enhance the eerie ambiance. The countdown to October 31st is officially on, and I can’t wait to fully immerse our home in all things spooky and fun!

Reflections & Intentions: September’s Deeper Meanings

Opening Up and Embracing the Season

September truly felt packed with an abundance of good things, a vibrant tapestry of experiences woven together that left us feeling grateful and inspired. There’s an undeniable magic in the transition from the golden warmth of summer to the crisp, colorful embrace of fall that always fills me with a unique sense of excitement and renewal. It’s a season of cozy sweaters, comforting flavors, pumpkin-spiced everything, and a gentle reminder to slow down, appreciate the beauty around us, and prepare for the inward turn of colder months.

Ryan, in particular, seems to thrive during this seasonal shift, as evidenced by his unwavering dedication to pumpkin spice lattes. Yes, I’m absolutely keeping count, and this month he reached a staggering ten! His love for them is truly *deep*, a testament to the iconic flavors of autumn and a delightful running joke between us. It’s secretly heartwarming to see him enjoy his seasonal ritual so much, fully embracing the spirit of fall with every delicious sip.

Community, Faith, and Personal Growth

Beyond our individual pursuits, I feel incredibly grateful for the quality time we’ve been able to spend with friends this month. Nurturing those relationships is so important for our well-being and happiness. Furthermore, our church life groups have officially kicked off again, and it’s profoundly good to be back in that rhythm. There’s a special comfort, strength, and sense of belonging that comes from doing life together – sharing experiences, offering support, and growing in faith within a close-knit community. These gatherings provide invaluable moments of connection and spiritual nourishment.

My personal morning quiet time has also become an invaluable and cherished part of my daily routine. Connecting with Jesus first thing in the morning sets a positive and grounded tone for the entire day, helping me approach challenges with peace and purpose. I enjoy a diverse approach to my devotions: sometimes I delve into specific books of the Bible, like the book of Ruth, which offers timeless lessons on loyalty and redemption; other times I follow engaging video series from platforms like Right Now Media; or I simply immerse myself in worship music, letting the melodies uplift my spirit and draw me closer to God. Reading a daily proverb also offers practical wisdom and guidance to carry throughout my day. I’m always eager to discover new ways to enrich this precious time, so if you have a favorite devotional, book, or spiritual practice, please do let me know – I’d love to hear your ideas!

Intentionality and Future Horizons

Ryan and I are also making a more conscious effort to be intentional about carving out dedicated time for activities together. We both share a tendency towards being workaholics, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of letting weekends become extensions of our workweeks, blurring the lines between work and personal life. Experiences like our “hike” through the Michigan woods and the experimental candle-making session are perfect examples of how we’re striving to prioritize shared adventures and creative projects, strengthening our bond and creating lasting memories outside of our professional lives. It’s about finding balance and truly investing in our relationship.

Looking back, purchasing the sectional for our basement might just be one of the best decisions we made all summer. Before, it was an expansive, somewhat neglected, and yes, often “spidery” space that we rarely utilized, feeling disconnected from the rest of our home. Now, it has completely transformed into our go-to haven for relaxation, cozy movie nights, and catching up on our favorite Netflix series. It’s incredible how one thoughtful addition can so dramatically change the functionality and feel of an entire area of your home, turning it into a cherished space.

Beyond these highlights, life continues at a steady pace, always with an eye toward future aspirations. We’re consistently hitting the gym – and yes, I’ve even embraced protein powder after my lifts, feeling stronger and more energized each week! Our thoughts frequently drift to the idea of expanding our furry family with another cat, imagining the joy another playful companion would bring. And, of course, the allure of a relaxing vacation also remains a delightful topic of conversation, as we dream of new adventures and moments of escape. September has certainly left us with a full heart, renewed energy, and plenty to look forward to!
