Join us as we recount the bustling events, creative projects, and memorable experiences that filled our month of March!

Sweet Collaborations and Colorful Creations

Out of the Kitchen - Fruity Pebbles Collaboration - Rainbow Cookies and Donuts

March brought forth an incredibly exciting opportunity: a collaboration with Fruity Pebbles! We were absolutely thrilled when they discovered our Rainbow Donuts online and expressed their admiration. This led to a fantastic partnership, resulting in these adorably festive Rainbow Sugar Cookies. It felt like the perfect way to welcome spring, especially with the playful notion that “April showers bring rainbows,” adding a touch of whimsy to our baking. Crafting these vibrant treats was not only creatively fulfilling but also incredibly fun, particularly when involving little helpers. The image on the right perfectly captures the delightful chaos that ensues when three-year-olds are given free rein with sprinkles – a truly joyous, albeit messy, experience that reminds us of the pure, unadulterated fun of baking with children. The sheer volume of sprinkles used was testament to their enthusiasm, making each cookie a unique, sparkling masterpiece. This collaboration was a wonderful reminder of how creativity can connect brands and bakers, turning simple ingredients into edible art that brings smiles to faces of all ages.

From Kitchen to Airwaves: A Food Blogger’s Public Debut

Out of the Kitchen - Radio Interview and Real Kitchen Mess

One of the most thrilling and nerve-wracking experiences this March was being invited to a local radio station! I had the incredible chance to go on air and discuss what it’s truly like to be a food blogger. While immensely fun, I must confess, my nerves were quite high leading up to it. Public speaking, especially live on the radio, is an entirely different beast than writing a blog post. However, I was pleasantly surprised and flattered by the positive feedback, with many listeners saying I have a “good radio voice.” It was a fantastic opportunity to share the passion, dedication, and often unseen work that goes into creating recipes and managing a food blog. This experience also highlighted the stark contrast between the perceived glamour of a food blogger’s life and the everyday reality. The photo on the right offers an honest, unfiltered glimpse into my kitchen during a typical baking session: overflowing with dirty dishes, counters covered in ingredients, and a general state of organized chaos. It’s far from the pristine, styled shots you see on the blog. It’s a messy, creative workspace, a constant reminder that behind every beautiful dish is a story of flour, sugar, and a whole lot of cleaning up!

Baking Adventures: Bright Flavors and Learning from Flops

Out of the Kitchen - Jelly Belly Cupcakes and Donut Fail

Creativity was certainly in full bloom in the kitchen this month. Pictured here is an exciting work-in-progress shot of some truly delightful Jelly Belly Cupcakes. I absolutely adore how incredibly bright and cheerful these cupcakes turned out – they truly embody a burst of springtime joy in every bite. My only wish is that Jelly Beans enjoyed year-round popularity; their vibrant colors and diverse flavors make them perfect for so many festive creations. They bring such an immediate pop of fun to any dessert! However, baking isn’t always about picture-perfect results, and the journey of a food blogger is often paved with culinary mishaps. The photo on the right is a candid, unfiltered look into the less glamorous side of recipe development: a significant baking fail. Not every recipe I attempt turns out perfectly, and sometimes, despite all effort, a batch just isn’t salvageable. These donuts, sadly, met their fate in the garbage can. It can be disheartening, but it’s an essential part of the process. Rather than being discouraged, these moments serve as valuable learning experiences, pushing me to refine techniques and try again. And indeed, a little perseverance goes a long way, as you’ll see from our next culinary triumph!

The Sweet Taste of Redemption: Donut Perfection Achieved

Out of the Kitchen - Successful Donuts with Cheesecake and Strawberries

Following our earlier mishap, I couldn’t resist giving those troublesome donuts another shot, and I’m thrilled to report that “Donuts Round 2” was an absolute triumph! Both of the stunning photos above showcase a truly spectacular recipe that combines the irresistible textures and flavors of donuts, creamy cheesecake, and fresh, juicy strawberries. This dessert was more than just a recipe; it was a revelation. My sweet husband, Ryan, who is usually quite reserved with his culinary critiques, proclaimed this creation “a piece of art.” His genuine enthusiasm and heartfelt compliment truly made my day, highlighting just how special this recipe is. It’s a wonderful feeling when a creation not only tastes incredible but also receives such high praise. The delicate balance of the soft donut, the rich tang of cheesecake, and the refreshing sweetness of strawberries creates a harmonious symphony of flavors that is genuinely unforgettable. We’re incredibly excited to share this masterpiece with all of you very soon, so keep your eyes peeled for the recipe. This delectable dessert is sure to become a new favorite for anyone who loves a luxurious and visually stunning treat.

Scientific Baking: Discovering Our Go-To Vanilla Cupcake

Out of the Kitchen - Husband Helping with Vanilla Cupcake Test

One of the most rewarding aspects of this month was a fantastic baking session with my incredibly supportive husband, Ryan. We embarked on a culinary quest to find the ultimate vanilla cupcake. This wasn’t just a simple baking session; it was a methodical experiment where we rigorously tested three different vanilla cupcake recipes side-by-side. Ryan, with his background as a chemist, was particularly fascinated by the process, and incredibly proud of me for “channeling my inner chemist” as we meticulously measured, mixed, and observed the subtle differences in each batch. We evaluated everything from texture and moisture content to flavor depth and overall rise. After careful deliberation and delicious taste tests, one recipe definitively emerged as the clear winner. This wasn’t just any win; it became our absolute “go-to” vanilla cupcake recipe, a foundational classic that has since been utilized and celebrated in numerous other creations here, here, and here. It’s a testament to the power of systematic testing and a shared love for perfect pastries. Finding that one reliable, consistently delicious recipe is a true game-changer in the kitchen, simplifying future baking endeavors and guaranteeing consistent perfection every time.

Piping Practice and Unexpected Sightings

Out of the Kitchen - Piping Frosting Demonstration and Campus Tractor

Continuing our kitchen collaborations, I had a fun moment demonstrating some piping techniques to Ryan. While he’s an incredible helper, mastering the art of frosting decoration takes a bit of practice! I even let him try piping the frosting onto a few cupcakes himself. Let’s just say those particular cupcakes might not have made it into the final photoshoot – he definitely needs a bit more practice, but his enthusiasm was infectious! It’s always enjoyable sharing these skills and seeing his interest in the more artistic side of baking. Switching gears entirely, the photo on the right captures a moment of pure, unexpected joy that had nothing to do with food! We stumbled upon this colossal tractor right in the middle of campus, its wheels absolutely dwarfing me. It was one of those quirky, spontaneous moments that simply demanded a photo op. When you encounter something so uniquely out of place and impressively massive, it’s practically mandatory to document it. These little detours and fun discoveries remind us that life isn’t just about work; it’s about embracing the unexpected and finding humor in everyday surroundings.

Celebrating Seasonal Flavors: The Return of Berry Pie

Out of the Kitchen - First Out of the Pan Pie and Blueberry Obsession

There are some culinary milestones each season that bring immense excitement, and this month marked one of them: the very first “out of the pan” pie of the season! I am absolutely thrilled about this, especially since it’s one of our all-time favorite recipes. You can discover the magic of this incredible Triple Berry Pie recipe here. There’s something truly special about the anticipation of a freshly baked pie, bubbling with ripe, seasonal fruit, straight from the oven. The aroma alone is enough to bring pure happiness. And speaking of seasonal fruits, the photo on the right perfectly encapsulates my profound “obsession with blueberries.” This picture is a vibrant celebration of their return, as they finally begin to come into season. Their sweet-tart flavor and juicy texture are simply irresistible, and I find myself constantly seeking new ways to incorporate them into everything from breakfasts to desserts. The arrival of fresh blueberries always signals the true beginning of warmer weather and a bounty of delicious, natural goodness to enjoy.

A New Ride: From Old Faithful to Our Orange Honda Fit

Out of the Kitchen - Old Ford Taurus and New Orange Honda Fit

Last month, in our February “Out of the Kitchen” post, I shared a snapshot of us engrossed in some leisurely reading, which was actually intense research into Consumer Reports articles about the best used cars to buy. Well, after much deliberation, we finally made a decision! It was a big moment for us as we traded in our trusty old Ford Taurus, affectionately (and accurately) valued at a whopping $800, for a new-to-us Honda Fit. The photo on the left shows our old reliable car, which served us well but was certainly due for an upgrade. The new car, pictured on the right, is indeed orange! While it wasn’t necessarily our first color choice, as the saying goes, “beggars can’t be choosers.” We embraced its vibrant personality, and honestly, the functionality and reliability of the Honda Fit far outweigh any initial color preferences. It’s a fantastic little car, practical and efficient, and we’re incredibly happy with our choice. This big purchase marks another significant life update, moving us forward with a fresh set of wheels for all our adventures, both in and out of the kitchen.

The Physical Demands of Food Photography & A Sweet Sneak Peek

Out of the Kitchen - Challenging Aerial Food Photography and Ice Cream Cone Stand

Food photography, while creatively fulfilling, often comes with its own unique physical challenges. The image on the left captures what is probably my least favorite way to shoot: standing precariously on a chair, hunched over the food, trying to achieve that perfect aerial shot. These sessions demand a particular kind of flexibility and patience, and I’ve learned that my foam roller becomes my absolute best friend afterward, providing much-needed relief for my protesting back and shoulders. It’s truly humbling to realize that I’m only 25, and I already feel the strain! It makes me wonder what tricks I’ll need to employ as I get older to continue capturing these beautiful dishes. Despite the physical toll, the pursuit of the perfect shot is always worth it. The photo on the right offers an exciting sneak peek at an upcoming blog feature! This dessert is not only incredibly delicious but also exceptionally charming, and I truly hope it convinces everyone that they absolutely need to invest in an ice cream cone stand. How cute is that display, right?! It adds such a delightful touch to serving ice cream and other treats. Keep an eye on the blog in the coming weeks for the full recipe and all the details on this adorable presentation.

Gluten-Free Discoveries and Playful Nanny Adventures

Out of the Kitchen - Gluten-Free Funfetti Mix and Nanny Kids Food Play

Living with a gluten allergy means that discovering new gluten-free products in stores feels akin to winning the lottery – it’s a small but significant victory! This month, I was genuinely excited to spot a new gluten-free funfetti cookie mix on the shelves. The idea of classic funfetti cookies, now accessible, sparked immediate joy. However, my excitement was quickly tempered by a sudden realization: I remembered that I actually don’t like funfetti cookies! Boooo, I know, it’s a bit anticlimactic, but sometimes memory serves a practical purpose, even if it dashes an initial hope. It’s funny how those moments happen. The photo on the right offers a delightful snapshot of the kinds of fun, engaging activities I enjoy with my nanny kids. This particular activity was a massive hit – after all, who doesn’t love the freedom to eat and playfully interact with their food?! We often explore creative ways to make mealtime and snack time both nutritious and entertaining, fostering a positive relationship with food from a young age. These candid moments with the kids are always filled with laughter and a reminder of the simple joys in life, even if it means a little extra clean-up!
