February has been a wonderfully busy and heartwarming month, filled with everything from feline antics and new photography gear to culinary explorations and meaningful personal growth. Join us as we share a glimpse into our world, highlighting the small joys, funny mishaps, and significant reflections that made this month truly special.
Feline Comforts and Photography Upgrades
Our beloved 7-month-old kitten, Salsa, continues to steal the show with his charming personality and incredible ability to find the most comfortable sleeping spots. Despite being only seven months old, he often looks like a fully grown cat, a testament to his impressive size! We recently caught him in a state of pure bliss, utterly zonked out and sunbathing, showcasing the epitome of feline relaxation. He was so still, in fact, that I humorously had to check if he was still breathing – a common concern for any devoted pet parent witnessing such profound tranquility! This particular moment perfectly encapsulated the serene joy a pet brings into our home.
Speaking of new additions, there was a major upgrade for my photography passion this month. I finally invested in a serious, heavy-duty tripod! For any aspiring or professional photographer, the excitement of acquiring a robust, reliable piece of equipment like this is truly unparalleled. It opens up so many new possibilities for stable shots, challenging angles, and improved image quality, which I’m incredibly eager to explore and share with you all in upcoming posts.
Salsa’s High Perches and a Tech Experiment Gone Wrong
Salsa’s adventurous spirit knows no bounds, and his latest favorite hangout spot has truly baffled us. He has somehow managed to claim the very top of our bedroom door as his personal observation deck. To this day, I’m still mystified as to how he gracefully, or perhaps not so gracefully, manages to get up there! It’s a daily spectacle, watching him survey his domain from such an unusual vantage point, confirming that cats indeed operate on their own unique set of rules and physics.
In another exciting, albeit ultimately unsuccessful, venture, Ryan received a fascinating device called the Raspberry Pi for Christmas. For those unfamiliar, it’s essentially a mini-computer that can be programmed for countless applications. Ryan, ever the tech enthusiast, decided to put it to use by setting it up to video tape Salsa’s nighttime escapades while we were out one evening. The idea was brilliant: capture all of Salsa’s secret shenanigans. However, in a classic case of modern technology woes, he forgot one crucial step: to actually record the footage onto his computer! So, despite all the elaborate setup, we sadly have no proof of Salsa’s nocturnal activities, a humorous reminder that even the best intentions can sometimes fall short.
Celebrating Chinese New Year and Unexpected Cat Toys
February brought with it the vibrant celebration of Chinese New Year, and we were fortunate enough to celebrate with one of Ryan’s coworkers and his wonderful wife. It was a delightful evening filled with cultural exchange and, most importantly, incredible food! We had the pleasure of trying “3 Cup Chicken,” a dish that was absolutely bursting with flavor and quickly became a new favorite. The highlight of the evening, however, was definitely the dumpling-making session. We all got involved, rolling dough and stuffing fillings. Ryan, much to my surprise and mild envy, turned out to be a natural pro at dumpling assembly, churning out perfectly crimped creations. My attempts, on the other hand, were… well, let’s just say they were made with love and a bit more rustic charm!
After the festivities, a long, unassuming cardboard box from my new tripod delivery found a new purpose. See that box in the photo? It wasn’t long before Salsa adopted it as his primary play place and cozy hideaway. It’s always amusing how simple cardboard boxes can captivate cats more than any expensive toy, providing endless entertainment and a perfect spot for ambush attacks on unsuspecting ankles.
Culinary Adventures and Sweet Birthday Treats
While we aren’t huge egg eaters in our household, every once in a while, Ryan decides to whip up an omelet for himself for dinner. This month, he bravely ventured into omelet territory, and while his enthusiasm was admirable, I think it’s fair to say he might need a bit more practice! I gently reminded him that eggs are a slow-cooking food and should ideally be prepared on lower heat to achieve that perfect fluffy texture, rather than the high-heat, slightly scrambled approach he took. It was a learning experience for both of us, and a good laugh for me!
On the sweeter side of things, I had the pleasure of baking these adorable cupcakes for one of my nanny kid’s birthdays. I topped them with delicate chocolate shards, which added a touch of elegance and whimsy. They looked absolutely fantastic! There was a slight oversight, however: I completely forgot to tell the kids that the chocolate shards were edible. Consequently, many of them meticulously picked off the beautiful decorations, leaving them uneaten. A small, comical detail that highlights the unpredictable nature of kids’ parties!
Pre-Valentine’s Day Fun and Imaginative Play
In the spirit of pre-Valentine’s Day celebrations, Ryan and I enjoyed a delightful ice skating outing. I’m happy to report that my ice skating skills have mildly but noticeably improved since my childhood days; at the very least, I no longer rely on those handy walkers for balance! Ryan, on the other hand, is quite the natural, effortlessly gliding backward with impressive grace. His skill definitely left me feeling a little awestruck and very impressed.
Beyond the ice rink, my nanny kids and I also engaged in some serious creative playtime with LEGOs. The photo captures a moment of intense concentration and collaboration. After this particular structure was completed, we unanimously decided that every good LEGO house needs a jail, so we enthusiastically set about constructing one! It’s always wonderful to see their imaginations soar and to be a part of their intricate, miniature worlds.
Embracing Cat Parent Life and New Hobbies
By now, it’s probably abundantly clear that I am utterly obsessed with Salsa. His charming personality, mischievous antics, and loving purrs have completely won me over. I often joke that once Ryan and I have kids, I’m destined to become “one of *those* people” – the incredibly doting, slightly over-the-top parent who captures every single moment and shares endless stories. Salsa is definitely preparing me for that role, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
On a more personal note, I’ve decided to take up adult coloring as a new hobby. While the name itself might sound a bit “lame,” I’ve found immense relaxation and creative satisfaction in it. It’s a wonderful way to unwind and focus. Of course, no new hobby goes unnoticed by Salsa; he’s developed a particular fondness for my colored pencils, which he often attempts to “help” me with by chewing on them. It’s a constant, adorable battle to keep my art supplies intact!
Putting the New Tripod to Work and Upcoming Recipes
My new heavy-duty tripod is already being put to excellent use, fulfilling its promise of opening up new photographic opportunities. I’m particularly excited about being able to shoot “aerial” shots with ease now, capturing overhead views of food and projects that add a dynamic new perspective to my blog photography. This capability is a game-changer for visual storytelling.
Speaking of new recipes, get ready because this week, I’ll be sharing the recipe for these vibrant and incredibly fun rainbow popsicles! They’re a burst of color and flavor, perfect for brightening up any day. A quick word of caution from personal experience, however: while experimenting with angles for this very shot, I made the questionable decision of balancing my tripod and camera precariously on top of a stack of random boxes. There was a heart-stopping, very scary moment where the camera almost took a dive to the floor. Lesson learned: always prioritize stability and safety over a daring shot!
Salsa’s Jungle Gym and a Sweet Easter Tease
It seems that whenever we set up the drying rack, Salsa’s beloved cardboard box suddenly loses its appeal. The drying rack, with its myriad of poles and levels, instantly transforms into his ultimate cat jungle gym. He absolutely adores it, climbing and exploring every inch with the agility of a seasoned acrobat. It’s quite the spectacle, watching him navigate his temporary vertical playground, reaffirming that cats truly find entertainment in the simplest, most unexpected household items.

Getting More Personal: Finding Stillness and Growth
The Illusion of Busyness
The overarching theme of the month, for me, has undoubtedly been “business.” I have to admit, I’ve become one of those people who, when asked “How are you doing?”, instinctively responds with “Busy.” But I’m learning that “busy” isn’t an emotion; it’s often a default answer that prevents me from truly acknowledging how I feel. The more I respond with “busy,” the more I realize I’m actually glossing over deeper emotions or neglecting to even check in with myself.
Sometimes, I don’t even know how I’m truly doing because I haven’t dedicated the necessary time to sit, reflect, and figure it out. This realization has prompted a significant shift: I’ve been intentionally spending more time relaxing and exploring new avenues for self-reflection. A key tool in this journey has been an app called Headspace, which guides users through meditation, helping to reflect, focus on breath, and visualize. It’s an entirely new realm for me, but I’m slowly yet surely learning what it feels like to truly be still, to quiet the incessant noise of daily life and connect with my inner self.
The Profound Value of Rest
It might sound a bit silly to some, but I am finally starting to genuinely value rest. In a society that often glorifies constant hustle and productivity, the concept of intentional rest can feel counterintuitive. Yet, the more I allow myself to rest, the more I find myself connecting with my faith and with Jesus. It’s a powerful reminder that even God, after completing the immense task of creation, chose to rest. This profound example underscores that while hard work is valued, rest is equally, if not more, important for our well-being and spiritual connection. Embracing rest isn’t about laziness; it’s about honoring our bodies, minds, and spirits.
New Commitments and Small Victories
I’m embarking on a new personal commitment: dedicating at least 10 minutes a day to reading the Bible. My Bible reading has historically been somewhat sporadic, coming in spurts rather than consistent daily practice. However, I deeply desire to be in the Word each day, so I’m going to make a conscious effort to integrate this into my routine. I’d love for you all to hold me accountable! I’ll be sure to report back on my progress in about a month’s time. This is a small but significant step towards nurturing my spiritual life.
In a slightly less profound but equally challenging personal endeavor, I’m also making an effort to wear my hair down more often. For years, it’s been a nuisance, perpetually tied back in a ponytail or bun. To motivate myself, I decided on a small incentive: I get a dollar for every day I manage to wear my hair down. In February, I believe I earned a grand total of $1. Hey, baby steps, right? It’s a funny little challenge that reminds me to break out of old habits and embrace new ways of doing things, even if it’s just with my hairstyle!
