Kick off your game day celebration with these adorable and delicious Football Themed Dirt Cups, topped with a chocolate-dipped Milano cookie football.

Game day is about more than just football; it’s about coming together, celebrating, and, of course, indulging in delicious food! While I may not be a football fanatic who can recite player stats or analyze every play, I wholeheartedly embrace the festive spirit that surrounds game day gatherings. My focus? The incredible array of snacks and desserts that bring smiles to everyone’s faces. Whether it’s the thrill of a nail-biting Super Bowl or a casual backyard BBQ with friends, the food spread is always a winning highlight.

My journey into the world of football fanfare has always been more about the camaraderie and culinary delights than the actual sport. Growing up, our family traditions revolved less around cheering for specific teams and more around the joy of shared meals. Even now, with my husband Ryan, our Super Bowl Sundays are less about the touchdowns and more about the tantalizing treats, engaging conversations, and anticipating the much-hyped halftime show. It’s truly a testament to how food can unite people, regardless of their sporting allegiances.

Our Winning Playbook: A Unique Spin on Classic Dirt Cups

Dirt cups are a timeless dessert, beloved for their simple layers of crushed cookies and creamy pudding, often adorned with gummy worms. They evoke a sense of nostalgic fun, mimicking patches of “dirt” in a charming, edible way. For our football rendition, we’ve taken this classic concept and given it a festive, game-day makeover. Our Football Themed Dirt Cups maintain the beloved simplicity while introducing elements that perfectly capture the spirit of the gridiron.

Each Football Dirt Cup is a delightful edible landscape, meticulously designed to resemble a mini football field. It starts with a generous base layer of crushed Oreo cookies, providing that quintessential “dirt” texture and rich chocolate flavor. This dark, crumbly foundation creates the perfect backdrop for what comes next. On top of the Oreo crumbles, we layer a smooth, decadent chocolate pudding. This velvety layer adds a luscious creaminess that perfectly complements the crunchy cookies, creating a harmonious balance of textures and tastes.

The true highlight that transforms these into football fields is the vibrant green whipped cream. Light, airy, and tinted with just the right shade of green food coloring, this whipped cream mimics lush stadium grass. It’s piped generously over the chocolate pudding, adding a refreshing contrast in both color and texture. Finally, the pièce de résistance: a Milano cookie, carefully dipped in rich chocolate, and then adorned with white royal icing stitches, ingeniously transforming it into a miniature football. This edible football rests proudly on top of the green “field,” making each cup a truly thematic and appetizing masterpiece.

Personalize your Football Themed Dirt Cups with either decorative football cookies or fun football sprinkles for an equally festive look.

For those looking for an even quicker assembly, these Football Themed Dirt Cups are incredibly versatile. You can easily substitute the homemade Milano cookie footballs with store-bought football sprinkles for a burst of color and a simplified preparation. Another fantastic option is to use decorative football party picks, which add a charming, ready-made touch to your desserts. These alternatives are perfect if you’re short on time but still want to achieve that festive game-day look.

When it comes to serving, the size of your cups can significantly impact the yield. I personally used 9 oz plastic cups for this recipe, which yielded 4 generously sized dirt cups from one box of pudding. However, if you’re hosting a larger gathering or simply prefer smaller portions, opting for 5-6 oz cups would be ideal. Not only will you get more individual servings, but these smaller cups are also perfect for little hands and make portion control a breeze. Regardless of the size you choose, these game day dirt cups are sure to be a hit, offering a delightful and visually appealing treat for all your guests.

Football themed dirt cups – a fun football dessert to make for game day, super bowl, or a football themed birthday party!

Equipment

  • Silicone Baking Mat
  • Baking Sheet
  • Squeeze Bottles
  • Glass Mixing Bowl

Ingredients

  • Milano cookies
  • Chocolate almond bark or chocolate candiquik
  • 1 package oreos, pulsed into crumbs
  • 1 box chocolate pudding, plus milk listed on the back
  • 2 cups (473ml) heavy whipping cream
  • ½ cup (56g) powdered sugar
  • green food coloring

Small batch royal icing

  • ½ cup (56g) powdered sugar
  • ½ tsp meringue powder
  • 2 tsp water

Instructions

  • It’s best to make the football cookie part ahead of time so the chocolate and royal icing have time to harden completely. This ensures sturdy, perfectly decorated footballs for your dirt cups.
  • In a small pot over low heat, gently melt the chocolate almond bark or chocolate candiquik, stirring until smooth. Dip each Milano cookie into the melted chocolate, coating it evenly. Use a fork to carefully remove the cookie, allowing any excess chocolate to drip off. Place the dipped cookies on a silicone-lined baking sheet or parchment paper to harden completely. This step ensures a crisp chocolate shell.

  • To create the small batch of royal icing, combine the powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water in a small bowl. Use an electric mixer to beat the mixture on medium-high speed until it becomes smooth, thick, and has a stiff consistency, usually about 2 minutes. Transfer this royal icing into a squeeze bottle or a piping bag with a small round tip for precise control when decorating.
1/2 cup (56g) powdered sugar, 1/2 tsp meringue powder, 2 tsp water
  • Once the chocolate-dipped cookies are completely hardened, use the royal icing to draw football stitches on each cookie. For best results, first draw a single straight line down the center of all the cookies to represent the primary lace. Allow this line to set for a few minutes before adding the smaller perpendicular stitches across it. This technique helps prevent smudging and creates clean, professional-looking footballs. Let the icing dry completely before handling.
  • Prepare for the whipped cream by placing a metal or glass mixing bowl and the beaters of your electric mixer into the freezer. Chilling these tools will help the heavy cream whip up faster and hold its stiff peaks better.
  • Follow the package instructions to prepare the chocolate pudding. Ensure you use the exact amount of milk specified for optimal consistency. Once prepared, transfer the pudding to the fridge to chill and set thoroughly. This will give it a firm texture perfect for layering.
    1 box chocolate pudding
  • Place the entire package of Oreo cookies (cream filling included) into a blender or food processor. Pulse until the cookies are finely crushed into uniform crumbs, resembling “dirt.” These crumbs will form the base of your dirt cups.
    1 package oreos
  • Remove the chilled bowl and beaters from the freezer. Pour the heavy cream into the bowl, add the powdered sugar, and a few drops of green food coloring. Begin mixing with an electric mixer on medium speed, gradually increasing to high, until stiff peaks form. This usually takes about 3-4 minutes, resulting in a vibrant, fluffy green “grass” layer.
2 cups (473ml) heavy whipping cream, 1/2 cup (56g) powdered sugar, green food coloring
  • To assemble these festive dirt cups, start by spooning about 1 tablespoon (or more, to your preference) of the Oreo crumbs into the bottom of each serving cup. Next, layer a generous spoonful of the chilled chocolate pudding over the Oreo base. Finally, spoon or pipe the vibrant green whipped cream on top of the pudding, creating a fluffy “field.” For optimal presentation and to prevent the cookie from softening, gently place a decorated football cookie on top of each cup just before serving. The assembled pudding cups can be prepared in advance and stored in the refrigerator, but always add the cookie garnish right before serving to maintain its crispness and visual appeal.

Notes

When making these Football Themed Dirt Cups, I used 9 oz cups and was able to yield 4 generous servings from one box of pudding. If you’re planning a party or prefer smaller portions, consider using 5-6 oz cups; this will allow you to make more individual dirt cups from the same amount of ingredients, perfect for a crowd!
