FEBRUARY 2025: MONTHLY LIFE UPDATES – OUT OF THE KITCHEN AND INTO OUR LIVES!
Welcome back to our monthly “Out of the Kitchen” series, where we share a peek into our lives beyond the recipes! February 2025 was a whirlwind of delightful moments, personal achievements, and monumental life changes. From the charming quirks of our feline friend, Salsa, to exciting career breakthroughs and the thrilling journey of buying our first home, this past month was truly unforgettable. Join us as we recount the memorable experiences that filled our days, blending everyday joys with significant milestones.
Salsa’s Sweet & Sassy Moments: Our Feline Companion

February was undeniably “The Salsa Show” in our household. Our particular, yet undeniably sweet, cat continues to be the charming, furry anchor of our days. Salsa is a creature of habit and strong preferences, often dictating the flow of our mornings with his subtle demands for attention. He has a unique way of inserting himself into our routines, especially when I’m engrossed in my morning devotional. There’s something incredibly heartwarming about him settling beside me, purring softly, making those quiet moments even more special.
Beyond our morning ritual, Salsa shares a unique bond with Ryan. It’s always a sweet sight to see him stretch out luxuriously on Ryan’s legs, a clear sign of comfort and affection. These small, tender interactions remind us of the immense joy and personality our pets bring into our lives, making every day a little brighter, a little more filled with purrs and gentle nudges. He’s more than just a pet; he’s an integral part of our family, and his particularities are just part of his lovable charm.
Date Night Fun and Feline Interruptions

Amidst all the hustle and bustle, we always make time for our cherished date nights. This month, Bananagrams took center stage. I’ll admit, it’s one of my least favorite games, primarily because spelling has never been my strongest suit! Thankfully, Ryan is always patient and supportive, never getting frustrated when I turn to him for spelling assistance. It’s these small acts of kindness and understanding that truly make our time together so meaningful and fun. Date nights aren’t just about the game; they’re about connecting, laughing, and supporting each other.
The second photo perfectly captures one of those “precious moments” that truly define life with a cat. Just as we were engrossed in our wordplay, Salsa decided he had had quite enough of our human entertainment. In typical feline fashion, he made his presence known, prompting an adorable interruption that brought our game to a delightful halt. These spontaneous moments, often initiated by our beloved pet, add an extra layer of joy and unpredictability to our lives, creating memories that we’ll cherish far more than any winning word tile.
Cherished Friendships and Community Connections

February also brought a bittersweet gathering with some truly incredible women. I absolutely adore this group of ladies, and our bible study dinners are always a highlight. This particular evening was dedicated to sending our dear friend Jess off to Nashville, where she’s embarking on a new and exciting job opportunity. It was a beautiful occasion filled with laughter, heartfelt conversations, and warm wishes for her next chapter.
It’s been incredibly inspiring to witness how God orchestrated our paths to intertwine, bringing us together during a shared season of life. We’re all navigating similar life stages, facing unique challenges and celebrating triumphs, which has forged a profound sense of community and support among us. These friendships are a constant source of strength, encouragement, and understanding, reminding us that we’re never alone in our journeys. We’ll deeply miss Jess but are incredibly excited for her new adventure, knowing that our bond will remain strong across the miles.
A Milestone Achievement: Ryan’s Publication in Nature Chemistry!

We have some truly monumental news to share this month! Ryan, my brilliant partner, achieved a career milestone he’s been working towards for years: his paper was officially published in the highly esteemed journal, Nature Chemistry! This is an extraordinary accomplishment in the scientific community, a testament to his relentless dedication, countless hours of research, and unwavering perseverance. We are incredibly proud of his hard work coming to fruition in such a prestigious publication.
Such a significant achievement certainly calls for a grand celebration! To mark the occasion, I surprised him with a brand-new, fancy omelet pan – a small token of appreciation for his incredible efforts and an encouragement for more delicious breakfasts! But the celebrations didn’t stop there. Ryan, in his characteristic impressive fashion, baked a spectacular torte cake all by himself! Just look at that masterpiece – it was absolutely delicious and a true work of art. I’m still persistently trying to convince him to join the food blog; with skills like that, he’d be an instant hit!
DIY Home Projects & Unexpected Sprinkles

February was also a month of satisfying DIY progress! I finally completed my very first IKEA project, a transformation I’ve been eager to tackle. You can catch a glimpse of the “before” on our previous January update here, but I am absolutely thrilled with how it turned out! The finished piece adds so much character to the space, and I particularly love the aesthetic appeal of the new cup pulls. It’s incredibly rewarding to see a vision come to life through a bit of effort and creativity.
However, no home project is complete without a little chaos, especially with Salsa around! The second photo perfectly illustrates a typical day in our home. While I was in the middle of a photoshoot, Salsa, ever the curious (and mischievous) cat, decided that a container of sprinkles was simply irresistible. He managed to dump the entire container, leading to a vibrant, shimmering explosion of sugar across the kitchen floor. He had an absolute blast chasing the tiny, colorful pieces around, turning the kitchen into his personal playground. As for me? I had an equally “great” time cleaning up every single sprinkle. It’s these moments, both rewarding and ridiculously messy, that make our home truly ours.
Creative Baking & Reader Highlights

Baking is always a joy, and this month I had the pleasure of teaching my friend Abbey how to frost and decorate a cake! It was such a fun experience, and I was genuinely impressed with her natural talent and how beautifully her cake turned out. She’s a true baking star! It’s always wonderful to share skills and create something delicious together.
The second photo is a heartwarming reminder of why we love what we do! A lovely reader shared a photo of their homemade chocolate chocolate cake, inspired by our very own recipe found here. How awesome is that?! It brings us so much joy and satisfaction when our readers engage with our content, try out our recipes, and share their delicious results. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that our culinary creations are bringing happiness to other kitchens!
Continuing Home Transformations: IKEA Project #2

The DIY spirit continued with IKEA project #2! This time, it was an unassuming plain black table that I envisioned transforming into a charming farmhouse-style piece. I’ve already made significant progress, priming and painting the table a clean, crisp white, and then carefully distressing it to achieve that coveted rustic look. The next step, and perhaps the most exciting part, involves adding beautiful wood boards to the tabletop to complete the farmhouse aesthetic. This project is still very much a work in progress, but I’m already so excited about the direction it’s heading and can’t wait to share the final reveal with you all!
Valentine’s Day Traditions & Desktop Decluttering

Valentine’s Day this year continued our favorite, simple tradition: pizza! We absolutely adore pizza, so it’s always a perfect choice for a cozy celebration. We opted for a charming picnic in our living room, complete with blankets, pillows, and our favorite slices, making for a wonderfully intimate and relaxed evening. It was a lovely opportunity to unwind, exchange thoughtful gifts, and simply enjoy each other’s company.
The second photo offers a humorous, relatable glimpse into my digital life. It’s a screenshot of my computer desktop, with a bright pink arrow pointing to the minuscule amount of free space I had left! It’s a common struggle for many, isn’t it? A desktop gradually filling with files, screenshots, and documents until it’s barely recognizable. But rest assured, I’ve since embarked on a major digital declutter, and my desktop is now a much cleaner, more organized space. Sometimes, even small victories in tidiness bring a surprising amount of satisfaction!
New Experiences & Spa Day Fun

February was also a month for trying new things! We attended our very first college gymnastics meet, and it was an absolutely thrilling experience. Seeing the athletes charge towards the vault with incredible speed and power, or perform breathtaking flips and balances on the narrow beam, was truly mesmerizing in real life. The energy in the arena was electric, and it was inspiring to witness such athleticism and dedication up close.
Adding to the fun, I also enjoyed a delightful spa and nail painting day with some of my sweet friends. It was a perfect opportunity for some much-needed relaxation, pampering, and quality girl time. These moments of self-care and connection with friends are so important for recharging and maintaining balance amidst our busy schedules. From high-energy sports to tranquil pampering, February offered a wonderful blend of new experiences.
AND THE BIG NEWS… WE BOUGHT A HOUSE!!!
That’s right! After much anticipation and careful planning, we are absolutely thrilled to announce that we have officially bought our first house!

OPENING UP: Our Home Buying Journey and Future Plans
If you’ve been following our previous “Out of the Kitchen” posts, you’ll know that a big move has been on the horizon. Ryan is graduating this spring and has accepted a fantastic job opportunity in central Michigan, which means we’ll soon be relocating. For months, we’ve been diligently scouring online listings, dreaming of what our first home might look like. There was one particular house that consistently caught our eye and truly resonated with us. Last week, we took a whirlwind three-day trip to Michigan specifically for a few house showings, and we’re overjoyed to share that we ended up buying the house we had fallen in love with online!
The home-buying process was certainly an adventure and didn’t unfold quite as smoothly as I had envisioned. We initially placed an offer on a different house, thinking it was “the one.” However, when the sellers weren’t willing to negotiate on the price, we pivoted our strategy. It was a moment of decisive action, and ultimately, we decided to pursue the house we eventually purchased. This experience taught us flexibility and reaffirmed that sometimes, the best plans are the ones that adapt. We are incredibly excited to embark on this new chapter as homeowners, and I’m already brimming with ideas for DIY projects to personalize our space. I might need to sweet-talk Ryan into fully sharing my overwhelming excitement for all the upcoming transformations!
Our new home boasts some truly fantastic features that we can’t wait to utilize. It backs directly onto a serene nature preserve, offering breathtaking views and a peaceful escape right in our backyard. Even better, there’s a convenient bike trail that winds through the preserve and leads straight into downtown. We’re already envisioning countless bike rides, leisurely strolls, and enjoying the natural beauty just steps from our door. This connection to nature and accessibility to the town center truly makes it our dream location.
We’re now down to approximately ten short weeks until our big move, and the schedule ahead looks incredibly busy, yet exhilarating. Next week is monumental for Ryan, as he has his defense (!!!!!) – a culmination of years of hard academic work. Our families will also be visiting to share in this significant event. Following that, Ryan will be attending an important conference in California, adding another layer of travel and activity. Then, almost before we know it, it will be graduation day, quickly followed by the big move itself! It’s a fast-paced few months, but each step brings us closer to our new home and new beginnings.
While there’s an undeniable wave of excitement washing over us as we anticipate this move, there’s also a touch of bittersweetness. We’ve built such a strong, supportive community here, forged wonderful friendships, and established routines that have become a cherished part of our lives. We will deeply miss the connections we’ve made and the people who have enriched our journey in this current chapter. However, we’re also looking forward to building new relationships and finding our place in the Michigan community, knowing that these experiences will only broaden our horizons and deepen our appreciation for the diverse connections life offers.
