October Delights: A Month of Creativity, Cozy Moments, and Festive Fun!
Welcome back to our “Out of the Kitchen” series, where we share a glimpse into our lives beyond the recipes. October was a whirlwind of autumn adventures, creative projects, and cherished moments. Join us as we recount all the highlights from this beautiful fall month!
Crafting Spooky Sweets: The Art of Halloween Treat Development

October wouldn’t be complete without diving headfirst into Halloween festivities, and that includes concocting some delightfully spooky treats! This year, I embarked on a mission to create a new Halloween-themed confection, and it was a true testament to the creative process of trial and error. My initial vision involved using waffle pretzels for a unique texture and shape, but as many bakers know, sometimes the ingredients have a mind of their own. After a few attempts, it became clear that waffle pretzels weren’t quite delivering the aesthetic I had in mind for my little vampires.
Embracing flexibility in the kitchen, I decided to pivot. Ditching the pretzels, I experimented with graham crackers, and to my delight, the transformation was remarkable! The little vampires not only looked significantly better but also offered a wonderful base for the fangs and candy eyes. This experience was a fantastic reminder that sometimes the best innovations come from unexpected changes and a willingness to adapt. A huge shout-out and heartfelt thanks goes to Ryan, who is always my steadfast support system and sounding board whenever I hit a creative roadblock. His encouragement is invaluable!
From Feline Friends to Football Frenzy: A Month of Diverse Pleasures

For those who have followed our journey for a while, you know my beloved cat, Salsa, holds a very special place in my heart. His charming personality and playful antics often find their way into our monthly recaps – he’s truly a star, usually gracing at least six pictures every month! His presence brings so much joy and warmth to our home, and October was no exception.
Beyond our cozy moments with Salsa, October also brought an exhilarating social gathering. We teamed up with friends to passionately cheer on the Michigan football team. While I might not be a die-hard football enthusiast myself, the energy and camaraderie of watching the game with such enthusiastic company were absolutely infectious. I had a blast experiencing the highs and lows of the match alongside them. Thankfully, I was surrounded by five wonderfully patient people who expertly explained the intricacies of the game, making the experience even more enjoyable and understandable for a football novice like me. Go Blue!
Behind the Scenes: Crafting Engaging Letterboard Lifestyle Content

A significant creative outlet for me each month revolves around my weekly letterboard posts. Every Thursday, I meticulously craft and share a new letterboard photo on my Instagram feed. These posts have evolved into a wonderfully fun and engaging way to incorporate lifestyle photography into my content, allowing me to share snippets of thoughts, seasonal messages, and personal touches. The images above offer a peek behind the curtain, showcasing the “making of” two different letterboard shoots.
As you can probably tell from these behind-the-scenes glimpses, I truly enjoy going all out with my setups! From selecting the perfect props to arranging the scene just so, each letterboard photo is a mini-project designed to capture a mood or message. It’s a delightful blend of creativity and storytelling, and I love seeing how these carefully curated scenes resonate with my audience. The consistency of these weekly posts has not only helped me explore different themes but also connect with followers on a more personal level, sharing slices of my life and home in a visually appealing format.
Salsa’s Mischief and Ryan’s Clever Training: A Day in the Life with Our Feline Friend

Working from home often comes with its unique set of distractions, and for me, that often means contending with the adorable, yet persistent, antics of Salsa. There was one particular day in October when he was exceptionally mischievous, turning my office into his personal jungle gym. He climbed on everything imaginable, perched directly on my computer keyboard, and generally made productivity an amusing challenge. In a bid to reclaim some focus, I decided to relocate to another room, hoping for a quieter workspace. However, Salsa, ever the loyal companion (or perhaps just seeking more attention), promptly followed me, ensuring I remained thoroughly entertained, if not always productive!
The second photo beautifully captures another delightful aspect of Salsa’s personality and Ryan’s incredible patience. Ryan has, quite impressively, “trained” Salsa to sit on his lap as a prerequisite for receiving treats. It’s an endearing routine that showcases their unique bond. This particular photo is especially sweet because Salsa, after successfully performing his “sit” for a reward, decided to settle down and relax with Ryan for a significant period. It’s these quiet moments of companionship that truly highlight the joy and warmth our feline friend brings into our lives, reminding us that sometimes, the best moments are the simple ones shared with loved ones, furry or otherwise.
A Breathtaking Autumn Escape: Chasing Peak Fall Colors in Northern Michigan

Our craving for autumn’s splendor led us on a delightful, impromptu Saturday journey to the breathtaking landscapes of Northern Michigan. The crisp air beckoned, promising a spectacle of fall colors that we simply couldn’t miss. Our destination was a charming ski mountain that, during the autumn months, transforms into a haven for leaf peepers, offering scenic chair lift rides. This unique experience allows visitors to ascend the mountain and immerse themselves in a panoramic display of vibrant fall foliage from a truly spectacular vantage point.
We timed our visit perfectly, arriving right at the peak of color season. The views were absolutely stunning, with every shade of red, orange, and gold painting the rolling hills and valleys below. It was an incredibly serene and beautiful experience, providing a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and appreciate the fleeting beauty of autumn. The entire trip, though quick, was a refreshing escape, leaving us feeling revitalized and utterly enchanted by Michigan’s natural beauty in its most glorious season. These spontaneous adventures are often the most memorable, and this one certainly left a lasting impression with its vibrant palette and serene atmosphere.
Culinary Transformations: From Breakfast Lover to Cake Creator

I must confess, I am a changed person! For many years, breakfast foods weren’t really my jam. However, something shifted, and now I’ve fully embraced the deliciousness of morning meals. This newfound appreciation led to an epic “breakfast for dinner” night in October, where we truly went all out. Our spread was nothing short of magnificent, featuring perfectly scrambled eggs, crispy hashbrowns, savory sausage, fluffy French toast, and of course, coffee for Ryan. It was a feast, a celebration of all things breakfast, enjoyed in the cozy comfort of our home during a crisp autumn evening. This culinary indulgence was a testament to how much my palate has evolved, and I wouldn’t trade these breakfast-for-dinner nights for anything!
The second photo showcases another delightful baking endeavor from October: a beautiful three-layer pumpkin naked cake. This special creation was made to celebrate a friend’s son’s very first birthday. Crafting this cake, with its delicate layers and subtle frosting, was such a joy and a wonderful reminder of how much I miss the art of cake making. The process of planning, baking, and decorating brought back fond memories and a renewed passion. It’s inspired me to make a conscious effort to schedule more cake-baking projects into my blog content in the coming months, sharing both the recipes and the creative process with you all. Stay tuned for more delicious bakes!
The Joy of Visual Storytelling: Fall Family Portraits and Cherished Moments

Autumn is undoubtedly one of my favorite seasons, not just for its breathtaking colors and cozy vibes, but also because it offers the perfect backdrop for one of my greatest passions: photography, especially capturing family portraits. There’s something incredibly special about preserving these fleeting moments and milestones for friends and loved ones.
Taking pictures of people is more than just a hobby for me; it’s a profound joy. I love the challenge and creativity involved in finding the perfect light, composition, and expression to truly capture the essence of a family or an individual. Being able to provide friends with tangible memories that they can cherish for years to come is incredibly rewarding. The warmth of the fall light, coupled with the vibrant foliage, creates an ideal setting for these sessions, resulting in images that are not only beautiful but also deeply meaningful. Each portrait session is a unique storytelling experience, and I cherish the opportunity to be the one behind the lens, freezing these precious chapters in time.
Appreciating the Everyday Hero: Ryan’s Sweet Surprises and Home Fixes

Awwww! Speaking of breakfast and delightful mornings, October truly highlighted Ryan’s thoughtful nature. One Saturday, I was treated to the most wonderful surprise: breakfast in bed! There’s truly nothing quite like waking up to the smell of coffee and a delicious meal brought right to you. It’s those small, spontaneous acts of kindness that make every day feel a little more special and cherished. His thoughtfulness always brightens my spirits and reminds me how lucky I am.
The second photo captures another reason why I’m so thankful for Ryan – his incredible handyman skills! A huge round of applause for this guy because he successfully fixed our electric fireplace. It had been acting up, and as the weather cooled in October, we truly missed its cozy warmth and ambiance. Ryan tackled the problem with characteristic determination and skill, and now it’s working perfectly again! Both Salsa and I are incredibly happy and grateful for his efforts. There’s something so comforting about having a warm, working fireplace, and knowing Ryan can always come to the rescue with his practical talents is truly wonderful. Our home feels extra cozy thanks to him!
Spreading Halloween Cheer: A Weekend of Pumpkin Sugar Cookie Baking

All throughout October, I found myself craving a very specific treat: pumpkin sugar cookies adorned with festive orange sprinkles. The craving became so intense that one weekend, I finally decided to turn that yearning into a delightful baking project! I pulled out my cookie cutters and whipped up a batch of charming Halloween-themed shapes, including classic pumpkins, spooky haunted houses, cheerful candy corn, and even eerie tombstones. Each cookie was then lovingly decorated, primarily with a vibrant orange glaze and, of course, those irresistible orange sprinkles.
The joy of baking these wasn’t just in eating them, but in sharing them! We ensured a little bit of Halloween love reached many people. I left a thoughtful bag in our mailbox for our wonderful mailman, brought a generous batch to church to share with our community, distributed bags to a few deserving neighbors, and Ryan even took some to work to spread the festive cheer among his colleagues. It was incredibly rewarding to see the smiles these simple, homemade cookies brought to so many faces. Sharing these sweet treats felt like a perfect way to celebrate the spirit of Halloween and connect with those around us, one delicious bite at a time.
Embracing Halloween Spirit: Tiny Pumpkins and a Welcoming Porch

This year, we opted for a charming and practical approach to pumpkin carving by choosing tiny pumpkins. This decision turned out to be brilliant! Unlike their larger counterparts, carving mini pumpkins was significantly less time-intensive and, delightfully, much less messy. It allowed us to enjoy the creative process without the usual cleanup hassle, making for a fun and relaxed autumn activity. The small, glowing faces of our carved pumpkins added a subtle, yet festive touch to our Halloween decor, proving that sometimes, less truly is more.
The second photograph offers a glimpse of our Halloween front porch, a space we love to transform each year to welcome the spooky season. With a careful arrangement of pumpkins, twinkling lights, and other festive elements, we aimed to create an inviting and spirited entrance for trick-or-treaters and visitors alike. Our porch decor is always a labor of love, designed to evoke the warmth and excitement of autumn and Halloween. It’s a joy to curate these seasonal displays, adding to the overall festive atmosphere of our home and neighborhood during this enchanting time of year.
