August Adventures: Our Journey Beyond the Kitchen
Welcome back to our “Out of the Kitchen” series! August proved to be a wonderfully full month, bursting with an eclectic mix of home comforts, outdoor adventures, significant personal milestones, and, of course, a healthy dose of culinary creativity. While our kitchen certainly saw its fair share of action, we ventured far beyond it, embracing new experiences, tackling exciting projects, and celebrating the simple joys of life together. From cozy indoor retreats to stunning natural landscapes, this month truly offered a rich tapestry of memories. Let’s dive into the highlights of our August journey!

Kicking off the month, Ryan sparked a brilliant idea: constructing an epic blanket fort in our basement, centered around our comfy sectional. It was incredibly nostalgic to embrace that childlike sense of wonder and creativity, meticulously engineering a fortress where blankets defied gravity (mostly!). We spent an entire weekend snuggled inside our cozy creation, binge-watching movies and relishing the simple pleasure of being immersed in our own little world. This impromptu project reminded us of the importance of making time for playful moments and embracing spontaneous fun. It was the perfect antidote to the stresses of daily life, transforming our basement into a magical escape.
Later that same weekend, we ventured out for a delightful change of pace. We discovered a charming local crepe place in town and decided on a spontaneous brunch outing. There’s something truly special about indulging in warm, freshly made crepes, filled with delicious sweet or savory ingredients, especially when it’s an unexpected treat. Getting out of the house for this impromptu meal was a refreshing experience, allowing us to connect with our community and savor new flavors. It perfectly balanced our fort-building efforts, showcasing a blend of cozy home life and exciting local explorations that defined our early August days.

Summer at our house wouldn’t be complete without extensive use of the grill, and this season, Ryan has truly earned his title as our resident grill master! His latest triumph was a batch of perfectly cooked teriyaki chicken kabobs. The blend of tender chicken, vibrant vegetables, and that irresistible sweet and savory glaze makes them a consistent crowd-pleaser. Grilling has become more than just cooking; it’s a cherished ritual, bringing us outdoors to enjoy the warmth and fresh air while creating delicious meals together. We love experimenting with new marinades and techniques, and Ryan’s expertise ensures every meal is a success.
Beyond our culinary exploits, our home improvement journey continued with an exciting update for our main floor bathroom makeover. After extensive online searching, we finally managed to gather all the necessary hardware in the exact shade of champagne bronze we envisioned. Matching different pieces from various online retailers proved to be quite a challenge, demanding patience and a keen eye for color consistency. There were a few close calls with shades that just weren’t quite right, but our persistence paid off. Now that we have all the fixtures, pulls, and accessories perfectly aligned, we’re eagerly anticipating the installation of our new vanity, which will bring this bathroom transformation one step closer to completion. We can’t wait to see our vision for a chic, cohesive bathroom come to life!

For a dose of breathtaking natural beauty, we embarked on a memorable day trip to the Arcadia Dunes, nestled on the stunning west side of Michigan. This hike is truly unique, offering a diverse landscape that transitions dramatically as you explore. We began our journey traversing through dense, verdant forests for several miles, enjoying the shade and the peaceful sounds of nature. Then, quite unexpectedly, the landscape opens up to reveal expansive, towering sand dunes. The hike continues through the soft, shifting sand, providing a challenging yet exhilarating experience as we climbed towards our ultimate destination: the magnificent point where these colossal dunes majestically meet the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan.
The views from the top were absolutely unparalleled, a stunning panorama of freshwater coastline against a backdrop of rolling dunes and distant forests. It’s a truly captivating sight that underscores Michigan’s incredible natural diversity. While we soaked in every moment, we realized for next time that packing a picnic lunch would be an essential addition, allowing us to linger longer and fully immerse ourselves in the serene environment. Following our dune adventure, we also made sure to visit the beach – an activity I had been longing to do all summer! The feeling of the sand between my toes and the gentle lapping of the waves was incredibly therapeutic, a perfect way to unwind after our invigorating hike and tick off a major summer wish list item. These outdoor escapades are vital for our well-being, recharging our spirits and reminding us of the immense beauty that surrounds us.

Connecting with friends safely remains a priority, and we were thrilled to host James and Bethany for a socially distant outdoor yard game night followed by a cozy bonfire. It was wonderful to catch up, laugh, and enjoy some friendly competition under the open sky. As the evening chill set in, the bonfire became the perfect gathering point, its flickering flames creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. This gathering also marked a bittersweet moment: we indulged in our first (and likely last) s’mores of the summer. The gooey marshmallows, melted chocolate, and crisp graham crackers were a delightful, quintessential summer treat, signifying the winding down of the season but leaving us with sweet memories of friendship and warmth.
Another highlight from Ryan’s ever-expanding grilling repertoire was his inaugural attempt at making ribs on the grill. And let me tell you, they were nothing short of amazing! He meticulously prepared them, achieving that perfect balance of smoky flavor, tender meat, and a wonderfully caramelized exterior. We were absolutely blown away by the results. The success of this first attempt means we’ve officially found our new go-to method for cooking ribs. This culinary triumph was a testament to Ryan’s dedication to mastering new techniques and his ability to consistently deliver restaurant-quality meals right from our backyard. We’re already looking forward to the next time these delectable ribs grace our dinner table!

For a mental workout, our friend Bethany lent us her “impossible puzzle.” True to its name, despite its relatively small size, this puzzle presented a formidable challenge. Ryan and I spent several days poring over the pieces, meticulously trying to piece together its intricate design. There were moments of genuine frustration, but also bursts of triumph as sections finally clicked into place. Bethany even had to provide a few crucial clues to nudge us in the right direction! The experience was a wonderful exercise in patience, collaboration, and perseverance, and the ultimate satisfaction of finally completing it together was immensely rewarding. It served as a great reminder that some of the best challenges, much like life itself, require a blend of individual effort and communal support.
On a much more significant and personal note, if you’ve been following our journey on Instagram, you’ll know that August brought a crucial step in our infertility journey: I underwent an HSG (Hysterosalpingogram) procedure. This diagnostic test provides vital information about the health and patency of the fallopian tubes. We approached this appointment with a mix of anxiety and hope, understanding the importance of the results for our path forward. We are incredibly thankful and relieved to share that the x-ray showed my fallopian tubes are healthy and open! This positive outcome represents a significant milestone, clearing an important hurdle and providing us with renewed optimism. It’s a huge step forward, and we’re now eagerly anticipating and preparing for the next phase in our continued journey towards building our family. Your ongoing support and well wishes mean the world to us.

This summer, Ryan dedicated himself to an impressive personal goal: training for a half marathon. His commitment to early morning runs, consistent mileage, and disciplined preparation was truly inspiring. All that hard work culminated in August when he successfully completed his first half marathon! He ran an incredible race, finishing in a fantastic time of 1 hour and 52 minutes. While it wasn’t an “official” race with crowds and formal timers, that didn’t diminish the magnitude of his achievement one bit. We believe in celebrating every victory, big or small, especially when they stem from such dedicated personal effort.
To honor his incredible accomplishment, I made sure to create a special moment for him. I fashioned a makeshift finish line with a celebratory ribbon, and he proudly crossed it, symbolizing the completion of his intense training and the realization of his goal. It was a joyful, heartfelt moment, marking a significant personal milestone. And what better way to celebrate such an athletic feat than with a well-deserved indulgence? We promptly celebrated his success with a box of delicious donuts, a sweet reward after weeks of discipline and hard work. Witnessing Ryan’s dedication and achieving this fitness goal was a true highlight of the month, emphasizing the power of setting and striving for personal challenges.

I have to admit, Ryan truly felt like the undisputed star of August, especially with his ongoing culinary genius! He cooked up a batch of gluten-free orange chicken that was so incredibly authentic, it tasted just like the beloved Panda Express version. For someone like me who hasn’t been able to enjoy orange chicken in 14 years due to dietary restrictions, this was an absolute revelation! The sweet, tangy, and slightly spicy sauce coating crispy chicken was pure perfection. It was an emotional and incredibly satisfying meal, further solidifying Ryan’s status as the executive chef in our household. His ability to recreate classic dishes in a gluten-free format, without compromising on flavor, is truly a gift.
In another fun, food-related activity, we embarked on a blind yogurt challenge. This was particularly entertaining because, for Ryan, yogurt isn’t just a snack; it’s practically one of his main food groups! We gathered a variety of different brands and flavors, tasted them blind, and tried to guess each one. It was a surprisingly competitive and hilarious exercise, highlighting the subtle differences in texture and taste across various yogurts. It’s these lighthearted, spontaneous activities that bring so much joy to our days. And, as a fun side note for those who pay attention to details in our photos, you might notice Ryan has an impressive collection of University of Minnesota workout shirts – clearly, his loyalty runs deep, just like his love for yogurt!

On my end, August was a month dedicated to sweet science in the kitchen, specifically focused on perfecting my classic sugar cookie recipe. This involved countless batches of cookies, all in the noble name of research and development! I meticulously tested different ratios, baking times, and techniques to ensure the final recipe yields perfectly soft, deliciously flavored sugar cookies every single time. It’s a true labor of love, but the anticipation of sharing this perfected recipe with all of you, knowing it will bring joy to countless bakers, makes every single batch worth it. Keep an eye out – this classic recipe will be making its debut on the blog very soon!
Stepping away from the kitchen, Ryan decided it was time to dust off our golf clubs – quite literally, with the help of a leaf blower, much to my amusement! We then headed to the driving range for some much-needed practice. Ryan, with his natural athleticism, is incredibly good at golf, picking up the swing and technique with ease. I, on the other hand, am what you might call “decent,” but only with a significant assist. My secret to success? Ryan patiently places markers on the ground, guiding me precisely where to position my feet and the ball for each shot! It’s a wonderful example of how we complement each other; his natural talent balanced by my need for clear instruction, all while enjoying a fun, active afternoon together. It’s moments like these, filled with laughter and shared hobbies, that truly enrich our days.

Indeed, August truly evolved into the month of cookies! Beyond perfecting the classic sugar cookie base, I had an absolute blast creating our frosted sugar cookie recipe, Lofthouse-style. The highlight of this particular creation was undoubtedly the tie-dye frosting. I am completely obsessed with how vibrant and playful it turned out! The swirling colors transform a simple cookie into a miniature work of art, making them almost too pretty to eat (but we manage!). Developing this recipe, from getting the perfect soft texture of the cookie to mastering the frosting technique, was a joyous creative process, and seeing the finished product always brings a smile to my face.
And speaking of these delightful frosted sugar cookies, I’m already looking ahead to upcoming holidays! As a special sneak peek, the second photo offers a glimpse of the Halloween version of these frosted sugar cookies. I’ve been busy creating festive designs and colors to celebrate the spooky season. These will be hitting the blog just in time for October, so you can start planning your own ghoulishly good treats. It’s incredibly rewarding to channel creativity into seasonal baking, bringing a touch of festive cheer to our readers and anticipating the joy these recipes will bring during the holidays.

The cookie craze didn’t stop there! August also saw me diving deep into another beloved variety: the classic sugar cookie that you roll in sugar. These offer a different kind of simple elegance, with their slightly crisp exterior and tender chewiness. It’s amazing how distinct the experience of this cookie is compared to its frosted or cut-out cousins. Did you know there are typically three main types of sugar cookies, each with its own unique charm and texture? There are the classic roll-in-sugar cookies, the versatile cut-out sugar cookies perfect for decorating, and the decadent frosted sugar cookies like the Lofthouse-style ones we just discussed. Understanding these distinctions helps appreciate the subtle nuances in baking and how a single base recipe can be transformed in so many ways.
In my ongoing effort to bring you timely and inspiring content, I’ve been working well ahead of schedule, taking advantage of August to photograph both Halloween and Christmas-themed sugar cookies. This early preparation allows us to craft the best possible recipes and visuals, ensuring that when the holidays roll around, you’ll have a wealth of festive baking ideas at your fingertips. It’s a busy but incredibly rewarding process, blending the art of baking with meticulous planning, and I can’t wait to share these joyous, seasonally inspired treats with you all as the holidays approach. Stay tuned for more deliciousness!
