Living with PCOS: My Story

Navigating the Labyrinth of Hormonal Imbalance: A Personal Journey with PCOS

For far too long, my body and I haven’t been on the same page. If you’ve been following my health journey, particularly concerning my hormones, you’ll know it’s been a complex and often frustrating path. What started as a hopeful step towards family planning evolved into a relentless quest for answers and healing.

My journey began in June 2017 when I made the decision to stop taking birth control. The intention was clear: to allow my body ample time to adjust, rebalance, and “normalize” before we embarked on the exciting adventure of trying to conceive. Little did I anticipate that nearly two years later, I would still be deeply entrenched in a challenging battle to understand and heal my hormones, facing a potential Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) diagnosis and its profound implications.

The Initial Adjustment: Post-Birth Control Uncertainty

The first six to twelve months post-birth control were characterized by a wait-and-see approach. My OB-GYN, like many health professionals, believed my body simply needed more time to adapt to life without synthetic hormones. The absence of regular menstrual cycles, or their sporadic appearance at intervals exceeding 80 days, didn’t initially raise significant red flags. We all held onto the hope that normalcy was just around the corner, waiting patiently for my body to find its rhythm.

The Unwelcome Guest: The Onset of Hormonal Acne

Then, an unwelcome and undeniable symptom began to surface: acne. At first, it was just a few stubborn pimples, a minor annoyance given that my skin had been remarkably clear while on birth control. I remember feeling a distinct pang of disappointment and self-consciousness about these initial blemishes. What I didn’t realize then was that this was merely the prelude to a much larger, more distressing dermatological battle.

Over the next eight months, the acne relentlessly worsened. It wasn’t just a few spots; it transformed into persistent, painful cystic acne that scarred my skin and my confidence. The memory of feeling profoundly self-conscious about returning home for Christmas, knowing my family hadn’t seen me since the acne erupted, remains vivid. I distinctively recall thinking in December, “This is bad. It can’t possibly get any worse.” Tragically, it did. Today, I look back at the severity of my acne in December with a strange longing, remembering it as a comparatively “mild” phase compared to its current state. The emotional and psychological toll of this physical manifestation of internal imbalance was immense, affecting my self-esteem and daily interactions.

Navigating the Medical Maze: Frustration and Dismissal

My quest for answers intensified in January with a battery of blood tests and an ultrasound. While the results revealed some characteristics consistent with PCOS, I lacked many of its classic symptoms. My OB-GYN’s response was perplexing: “It might be PCOS – let’s start you on Clomid.” This was particularly jarring because we hadn’t even openly discussed actively trying to conceive yet. Her suggestion felt dismissive of the myriad symptoms I was experiencing, giving the impression that unless pregnancy was the immediate goal, my struggles were secondary. I left that appointment feeling unheard, with a sense that “you might have PCOS, but I can’t help you unless you want to get pregnant,” and without any additional blood work or a suggested follow-up appointment.

The tears came, hot and fast. Thankfully, my partner, Ryan, was with me, grounding me when I felt utterly deflated. It took persistent pushing and advocating on our part to even receive a referral to an endocrinologist. The relief was short-lived, however, as the appointment was scheduled for four agonizing months later. Similarly, my attempt to address the escalating acne led to another four-month wait for a dermatologist’s consultation. The glacial pace of the healthcare system was a stark and frustrating reality.

Seeking Alternative Paths and Dietary Changes

During these long waiting periods, I proactively explored other avenues. Anecdotal evidence strongly links cystic acne to dairy consumption, so I eliminated dairy from my diet. Soy soon followed, and I became intensely mindful of my sugar intake. As someone already committed to a gluten-free lifestyle, my dietary options narrowed considerably, but I was desperate for any potential relief.

We also decided to consult a naturopath in the interim, hoping for a more holistic perspective. This, unfortunately, proved to be a bust. Her primary insight was that my ovaries were “weak” – a rather unhelpful statement given that was precisely why I sought her expertise. Her proposed solution involved signing me up for a program requiring bi-weekly in-person visits for three months. Given that I live two hours away, this was logistically challenging, especially when she then stated phone appointments would be twice as expensive. Adding to the skepticism, she mentioned her program wouldn’t significantly alter my diet, leaving us with little understanding of its actual benefit. It was clear this wasn’t the right fit, and we decided not to proceed.

A Glimmer of Hope: The Endocrinologist’s Insight

Time, though slow, eventually brought us to our first appointment with the endocrinologist. His approach was a breath of fresh air. He genuinely seemed invested in unraveling the mystery of what was happening within my body. He ordered a comprehensive panel of additional blood tests – a process that, I admit, significantly challenged my fear of needles. He clarified that PCOS is often a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning other conditions must be systematically ruled out before a PCOS diagnosis is definitively made. Given PCOS’s spectrum nature, a thorough exclusionary process is crucial for accurate diagnosis.

Our follow-up appointment to discuss the lab results brought more clarity. My blood work revealed several levels consistent with PCOS, including elevated testosterone, high androgens, and raised prolactin. However, crucially, I did not exhibit other classic PCOS markers such as insulin resistance, being overweight, or the presence of ovarian cysts. Based on this nuanced profile, he diagnosed me with “non-classic PCOS.”

The Treatment Conundrum: Balancing Present Needs and Future Dreams

We delved into treatment options, but a significant dilemma quickly emerged. My primary goal is to ensure my body is in the healthiest possible state before attempting to get pregnant. Yet, many of the standard medical interventions for PCOS, while effective for managing symptoms, are contraindicated during pregnancy or when actively trying to conceive. This created a frustrating “catch-22”: how do I heal and prepare my body for conception when the very treatments that could help are off-limits?

Compounding this challenge is the daunting possibility of infertility. Some women with PCOS experience infertility, while others do not. The knowledge that I already carry heightened risks for infertility and miscarriage due to elevated testosterone and TSH levels is incredibly unsettling. The treatments available to mitigate these risks again often involve medications incompatible with pregnancy attempts. This cyclical predicament left me feeling trapped and without a clear path forward. It often feels as though the medical community struggles to provide clear guidance for women like me, who are aiming for conception in the near future while grappling with an active hormonal imbalance.

Beyond the Diagnosis: The Unseen Struggles and Self-Advocacy

I yearned for more concrete answers, for a clear advisor to guide me. This journey has underscored the critical importance of fighting for your own health. You must consistently advocate for yourself, push for second opinions, and articulate when something “doesn’t feel normal.” Even then, I frequently encountered dismissive responses, being told, “You’re fine, you’re in the upper range of normal, but still normal.”

But what I’m enduring is far from normal. My body is constantly sending distress signals: irregular cycles and unpredictable bleeding, debilitating cystic acne, unwanted hair growth, and even painful intercourse. These symptoms are not mere inconveniences; they are profound indicators that my hormonal ecosystem is out of balance, demanding attention and effective intervention.

So, this is where I stand today. The search for solutions continues. We are now exploring additional options, including consulting a functional medicine practitioner. The hope is that a more holistic, root-cause approach, potentially involving targeted supplements, might help to naturally lower some of my elevated hormone levels and bring my body back into a state of equilibrium.

What’s God Been Teaching Me Through This Journey?

In all honesty, I haven’t navigated this trial with perfect grace. My default has been to try and “fix” everything within my power – to conquer the acne, to reset my hormones. I’ve spent countless hours on Google, endlessly searching for answers, desperately hoping to stumble upon that one piece of information that will unlock my healing. I’m still grappling with fully accepting my PCOS diagnosis, trying to reconcile it with my vision for a healthy future.

Yet, amidst this struggle, I recognize a profound purpose. God has granted me a platform to share my story – His story through my experiences – and to be vulnerable. I hold onto the conviction that He will use my journey for good, and this belief fuels my courage to share the depths of what I’m walking through with you.

Four years ago, during a period of debilitating anxiety, the most impactful relief I found was in sharing my story. By opening up, I discovered that countless others were experiencing similar struggles. This realization shattered my sense of isolation, providing immense strength and a powerful sense of community. The understanding that I was not alone was a profound catalyst for healing.

I am embracing that same approach now. I choose vulnerability, sharing my raw, unedited journey with the hope of fostering community and receiving encouragement. But more profoundly, I share with the expectation that Jesus will utilize my personal trial to bring comfort and solace to you, ensuring that you know you are never alone in whatever difficulties you are experiencing.

If you find yourself navigating a difficult, tear-soaked season, please know that I am walking one alongside you. More importantly, know that Jesus is walking with you every step of the way. We can lift each other up in prayer, trusting that God, in His infinite wisdom, will bring forth something beautiful and good from circumstances that currently seem overwhelmingly bleak and challenging. God doesn’t expect us to shoulder these heavy burdens alone; He desires for us to hand them over to Him, finding strength and peace in His unwavering presence.
