Cozy winter wear and pulverizing candy canes with a rolling pin for festive baking

Embracing the Cozy Season: Winter Warmth and Kitchen Prep

As soon as December arrived, our wardrobes transitioned into peak comfort mode. It’s all about cozy clothes and an abundance of layers to fend off the chilly weather. Confession time: my go-to uniform became Ryan’s oversized sweatpants and his wonderfully warm green sweatshirt. I affectionately “adopt” them as mine from the first hint of December chill right up until the thermometer consistently hits a balmy 50 degrees Fahrenheit! There’s something incredibly comforting about snuggling into familiar, soft fabrics during the colder months, making even the simplest tasks feel a little more festive. Speaking of festive, here’s a peek behind the scenes: a shot of me enthusiastically pulverizing candy canes with my trusty rolling pin. This method is an absolute game-changer for crushing anything, delivering perfectly textured crumbs every time, whether for a sweet topping or a crunchy base.

Gold themed New Year's Eve party supplies and behind-the-scenes recipe testing

Sparkling New Year’s Eve Preparations: All That Glitters Is Gold!

The spirit of celebration didn’t just stop at Christmas; a few weeks before the big day, my attention naturally turned to New Year’s Eve. This meant diving headfirst into developing and testing a host of exciting New Year’s Eve recipes. The planning was just as much fun as the cooking! I remember placing a special order for all things gold – shimmering napkins, elegant silverware, and an abundance of glittery gold sprinkles to add that extra touch of sparkle. The NYE recipes I shared that year truly became some of my personal favorites, embodying the celebratory mood perfectly. This second photo captures a candid, behind-the-scenes moment from one of those recipe shoots. There was an immense joy in working with the gold theme, bringing a touch of glamour and festivity to every dish. It’s moments like these, experimenting with colors and flavors, that truly make recipe development a creative adventure.

Our long-awaited Christmas tree and Ryan's 25th birthday balloon surprise

A Christmas Tree Comeback and a Birthday Surprise!

You wouldn’t believe it, but we finally got a Christmas tree! After two Christmases without one, the excitement was palpable. I (and by “we,” I mostly mean “I”) was absolutely thrilled to have a beautiful tree to adorn our home this season. It truly makes the holidays feel complete, filling the air with that distinct festive scent and sparkling magic. December also held another significant celebration: Ryan’s birthday! To kick off his special day, I woke him up with a charming surprise – our bedroom was filled with 25 balloons, one for each year. Do you spot that enormous white balloon in the picture? Yes, I took the liberty of drawing my face on it, much to our amusement! Ryan genuinely loved the balloon surprise; they floated around our room, bringing a smile to our faces for about two weeks, serving as a constant reminder of the fun celebration.

Community Spirit and Golden Puppy Chow

The holiday season is also a wonderful time for community and connection. Here’s a lovely photo of Ryan and me at our church’s Christmas party, enjoying the festive atmosphere and fellowship. These gatherings are always a highlight of December, fostering a sense of warmth and togetherness. And speaking of warmth, our kitchen was a hub of activity! This next image offers another behind-the-scenes glimpse into our New Year’s Eve recipe creation. This time, it’s the delightful White Chocolate NYE Puppy Chow, generously adorned with edible gold star sprinkles! It’s a wonderfully easy and addictive treat, perfect for any holiday gathering, and the gold stars truly elevate it to a celebratory snack. The process of making it was just as enjoyable as seeing the final, glittering result.

Laying under the Christmas tree watching Christmas with the Kranks and nanny kids as future food bloggers

Holiday Movie Traditions and Budding Food Bloggers

Proof that I fully embraced the holiday spirit: here I am, snuggled under our newly acquired Christmas tree, wearing my festive Christmas sweater, and utterly engrossed in “Christmas with the Kranks.” It was an intensely Christmas-y moment, embodying everything we love about the season! “Christmas with the Kranks” holds a special place in our hearts as one of our all-time favorite holiday movies. Have you had the pleasure of seeing it? It’s a classic for a reason! The next photo is a heartwarming sight: my nanny kids, who often join me in the kitchen, look like future food bloggers in the making! Their enthusiasm and curiosity for cooking and baking are truly infectious, and it’s a joy to watch them explore the culinary world. Who knows, perhaps they’ll be sharing their own delicious creations with the world someday soon!

Baking fail with spilled chocolate chips and first attempt at fried donuts

Kitchen Mishaps and Delicious Learning Curves: The Art of Fried Donuts

Not every kitchen adventure goes perfectly, and this photo serves as a humorous reminder of a recent baking fail. After painstakingly spending 15 minutes picking out individual red and green chocolate chips from a mixed bag and meticulously chopping them, disaster struck! They tumbled all over the floor in a colorful explosion. “Noooo!” was undoubtedly my immediate reaction, followed by the realization that I had to start all over again. Such is the reality of baking sometimes, a testament to patience and perseverance! The subsequent photo captures a much more successful, albeit challenging, endeavor: Ryan and I trying our hand at making fried donuts for the very first time. It was certainly a learning process, particularly in mastering the art of keeping the oil at the perfect temperature. But despite the initial hurdles, we had so much fun, and the delicious results were worth it. This exciting recipe, complete with a bunch of handy tips we learned along the way, will be coming to the blog very soon!

Ryan feeding peanuts to a squirrel and sneak peek of a chocolate peanut butter Super Bowl recipe

Ryan’s Squirrel Obsession and a Super Bowl Tease

If you’ve been following along, you’ll know that Ryan has a deep and enduring love for squirrels, something I’ve mentioned here, here, and here. But truly, have you ever seen anything like this?! He’s been diligently feeding peanuts to our local squirrel population, and one remarkable day, we had the incredible opportunity to watch a single squirrel devour all twelve peanuts! I was genuinely surprised the little fellow didn’t dart away, allowing us such a prolonged and charming interaction. It’s moments like these that remind us to appreciate the simple joys in life. Switching gears, the next photo offers a tantalizing sneak peek of an upcoming Super Bowl recipe! I am absolutely buzzing with excitement to share it with you all. Let’s just say it involves a magical combination of chocolate, peanut butter, and adorable football-themed elements. Get ready for a touchdown-worthy treat!

Behind the scenes of our Christmas cookie baking extravaganza

The Great Christmas Cookie Baking Extravaganza!

Both of these delightful photos capture the spirited, flour-dusted chaos that was our annual Christmas cookie baking extravaganza! This tradition is a cornerstone of our holiday season, filled with laughter, delicious aromas, and a whole lot of creative energy. We dedicated several joyful hours to baking a huge assortment of cookies, each batch destined for a special purpose. Some were carefully packed to be passed out during our festive caroling adventure, spreading cheer one sweet bite at a time. Others were lovingly arranged in baskets for our wonderful neighbors and dear friends, a small token of holiday appreciation. And, of course, a generous selection was prepared for us to take home to our families, ensuring everyone got to enjoy our homemade Christmas treats. It’s truly a labor of love that fills our home with the most wonderful holiday scents and brings immense joy through the act of giving.

Christmas caroling with bible study group and traveling back to Minnesota with elf friends

Spreading Joy Through Caroling and Holiday Travels

Here’s a snapshot of Ryan and me, bundled up and smiling, as our bible study group embarked on a Christmas caroling adventure! This was an experience I had always dreamed of doing, and it was even more fun than I imagined. We sang our hearts out, bringing festive melodies to doorsteps, and it was truly wonderful. A lot of people were genuinely surprised to see carolers, as it’s not as common a tradition as it once was, but their reactions, from wide smiles to heartfelt thanks, made it all the more rewarding. I think it might just have to become a yearly tradition for us! The next photo captures another significant part of our December: the journey home for Christmas. Here I am with my two “elf friends” and a towering Christmas tree at a gas station somewhere in Wisconsin, midway through our trip back home to Minnesota. Road trips during the holidays are always filled with unique sights and memorable moments, and this one was no exception, marking the joyous return to family.

Family gingerbread house decorating with igloo and fish ponds

Gingerbread House Extravaganza: A Sweet Family Tradition

Every Christmas, my family upholds a cherished tradition of making gingerbread houses. It’s a highlight of the holiday season, bringing out everyone’s creative, and sometimes competitive, spirit! This year, Ryan and I embarked on a mission: to adorn our gingerbread house with an unprecedented amount of candy. And I truly believe we succeeded! We had a fantastic little helper in my energetic 4-year-old niece, whose boundless enthusiasm added even more joy (and candy) to our creation. There are a few standout features on our sugary abode that I’d love to point out: nestled on the left of our vibrant red carpet sidewalk, you’ll find a delightful igloo, proudly represented by a generous blob of white frosting. To the right of the sidewalk, just above the candy Christmas tree, we even managed to construct TWO charming fish ponds, complete with vibrant red Swedish Fish swimming in their frosting “water.” As for that rogue lollipop leaning casually against the house… well, its origin remains a delightful mystery, adding to the charm of our festive creation!

Decorating gingerbread men with unique styles

The Art of Gingerbread Man Decorating

Beyond our magnificent gingerbread house, we also spent time decorating gingerbread men. It was such a fun and illuminating activity, highlighting the diverse decorating styles of each person. Some opted for meticulous detailing, creating perfectly piped buttons and expressive faces, while others embraced a more abstract, free-spirited approach, piling on the sprinkles and candies with joyful abandon. Each gingerbread man became a unique edible character, a sweet reflection of its decorator’s personality. It’s these simple, shared moments of creativity and laughter that truly make the holidays so memorable and special.

It’s a beautiful snapshot of holiday warmth and togetherness, truly embodying the spirit of the season. The bottom photo shows some of my own family members, all smiles and exhilaration after an energetic round of laser tag! It’s always a blast getting together with family, whether for traditional gatherings or more active, fun-filled adventures.
