October Unveiled: Our Latest Adventures, Milestones, and Musings ‘Out of the Kitchen’
Welcome back to another heartfelt edition of ‘Out of the Kitchen,’ where we pull back the curtain on our daily lives and share all the exciting, challenging, and heartwarming moments we experienced throughout October. This past month has been a whirlwind of unexpected events, creative endeavors, significant personal milestones, and deeply reflective moments. From quirky household incidents and professional triumphs to fulfilling long-term goals and navigating personal struggles, October truly delivered a diverse tapestry of experiences we’re eager to share with you all, offering a genuine glimpse into our life beyond the recipe blog.
Unexpected Encounters and Baking Bliss
Our month kicked off with a rather memorable, albeit slightly terrifying, encounter right in our own home. Picture this: a heavily pregnant spider, comfortably settled into a complex web on our ceiling. My mind immediately raced to those viral YouTube videos – you know, the ones where a single squish turns into a nightmare of hundreds of baby spiders scattering everywhere. That was a scenario I absolutely refused to let unfold under our roof! With utmost caution and a healthy dose of trepidation, Ryan bravely undertook the mission of safely removing our eight-legged tenant. The intricate process involved careful maneuvering and a steady hand, all performed with a quiet determination. It was a moment of collective relief and a testament to quick thinking and careful execution. Crisis averted, phew! We were both incredibly thankful for a peaceful resolution to what could have been a very ‘creepy-crawly’ situation.

Following that high-stakes arachnid removal, we dove headfirst into a more delicious and comforting kind of adventure. One Friday night, our kitchen transformed into a bustling hub of activity for what I fondly remember as our “banana muffin baking extravaganza.” The air quickly filled with the irresistible aroma of ripe bananas, warm spices, and melting chocolate chips. We spent hours mixing ingredients, carefully pouring batter into muffin tins, and anticipating the golden-brown perfection that would emerge from the oven. There’s something incredibly therapeutic about the rhythmic process of baking, especially on a crisp autumn evening. The result was a towering stack of warm, fluffy, and utterly delicious banana muffins that perfectly capped off a week filled with both thrills and simple joys. It’s these small, shared moments of culinary creativity that truly enrich our home life and create lasting memories.
Creative Milestones and Our Photography Journey
October brought an incredibly exciting professional milestone that filled me with immense pride and a touch of surrealism: I had several of my cherished recipes published in the winter issue of Yum for Kids magazine! Seeing my work in print, beautifully laid out and nestled amongst other talented creators, was an exhilarating experience – yet, it also brought a familiar wave of self-doubt. Initially, I found myself comparing my images to those of other bloggers in the magazine, feeling as though mine might not quite measure up to their polished aesthetic. However, Ryan, ever my steadfast supporter and voice of reason, gently reminded me of a crucial truth: the magazine editors clearly valued my images and recognized their quality, otherwise, they wouldn’t have chosen to feature them prominently in their publication. His words were a much-needed affirmation, allowing me to fully embrace this wonderful achievement and appreciate the continuous journey of growth in my food photography.

In parallel with this publishing success, I also made a significant investment in improving my photography setup. I recently acquired a beautiful set of new, handcrafted backgrounds from the incredible artisans at Erickson Wood Works. These versatile backdrops are absolutely essential for elevating the visual appeal of my food photography, providing texture, depth, and a consistent aesthetic that truly makes dishes pop off the screen. Naturally, I couldn’t wait to test them out in a real-world setting! My chosen subject for the inaugural photoshoot on these new surfaces was a decadent, rich chocolate chocolate cake – a perfect blend of appealing aesthetics and irresistible flavor. The testing session was a resounding success; the new backgrounds performed beautifully, perfectly complementing the cake and making it look absolutely mouthwatering. It’s incredibly satisfying when new tools seamlessly integrate into your creative process and visibly enhance the final product, pushing the boundaries of what you can create.
Domestic Antics and Playful Moments
Our home life, as always, is full of endearing quirks and unexpected laughter. One quiet afternoon, I walked towards the kitchen only to be met by Ryan, who, with a sheepish grin and a conspiratorial tone, exclaimed, “Don’t come in here!” Of course, such a warning only piqued my curiosity further, and I naturally had to investigate the mysterious command. What I discovered was a comical scene of a single, rather resilient, egg that had seemingly embarked on an adventurous journey across our kitchen. Apparently, it had been innocently placed on the kitchen table, then decided to roll off, make a surprisingly bouncy landing on a nearby chair, and finally complete its descent onto the hard floor below. It was a classic “Ryan trying to discreetly clean up a mess before I notice” moment, and we both had a good laugh about its unlikely trajectory. It’s these small, spontaneous bursts of humor that keep our days interesting and remind us not to take ourselves too seriously.

Later in the month, we stumbled upon an abundance of bubble wrap – the kind that makes every package delivery feel like a mini-Christmas in itself. Instead of simply discarding it, we decided to embrace the pure, unadulterated joy it offers. We declared an impromptu “stomping party,” spreading large sheets of bubble wrap across the living room floor and indulging in the immensely satisfying symphony of pops and crackles. It was a simple, yet incredibly effective, way to release some energy, shed the stresses of the week, and embrace pure childlike glee. There’s truly something magical about the sound and sensation of popping bubble wrap, and it proved to be a fantastic mood booster. Sometimes, the best moments are found in the simplest of pleasures, turning ordinary packing material into an extraordinary source of fun and laughter for everyone involved.
A Monumental Milestone: Celebrating Debt-Free Living and Welcoming Salsa!
October marked a truly monumental occasion for us – one that we’ve been working towards with unwavering dedication, discipline, and sacrifice for years. We finally paid off our massive college loans! This achievement represents countless hours of hard work, meticulous budgeting, and making deliberate choices to prioritize our financial future, all culminating in an incredible, almost overwhelming, sense of freedom and relief. To celebrate, we sent a festive photo to my family, proudly holding up a single dollar bill. We later realized this simple gesture might have been misinterpreted, as some of them charmingly thought we were subtly announcing a pregnancy – implying “one baby”! While that’s a sweet thought and someday perhaps, the reality was even more significant for us. We were holding up that dollar because it symbolized the *only dollar we had left* after making that final, life-changing payment. It was a profound moment of shedding a heavy financial burden that had loomed over us for far too long, marking a genuine turning point in our lives.

Back in the summer, amidst our relentless loan repayment efforts, we had made a significant pact: once our loans were fully repaid, we would celebrate this monumental achievement by getting a kitten. It was a powerful motivator, a tangible reward eagerly anticipated at the end of a long and challenging journey. And so, true to our word, we did! Welcoming a new furry friend into our home was the perfect, heartwarming way to mark this new chapter of financial independence and personal growth. This adorable addition immediately brought an extra layer of warmth, playful energy, and endless cuddles to our lives. Speaking of creativity and warmth, every year I enjoy creating a special, hand-drawn Halloween drawing for the nanny kids I care for. This year’s creation was a particularly fun one, filled with whimsical spooky elements. When I showed it to Ryan, I jokingly asked if he’d actually pay money for it – a little self-deprecating humor about my artistic skills, but also a nod to the joy it brings! It’s a small tradition, but one that spreads a lot of happiness.
Amidst all the celebrations and new beginnings, we also took the opportunity to visit a wonderful local pumpkin patch. This particular patch is owned and operated by a dedicated family of farmers, and what makes it even more special is their inspiring mission: all the proceeds generated from their pumpkin sales go directly towards funding their children’s college education. It’s such an admirable example of community support, hard work, and long-term planning, and it certainly got me thinking. Perhaps growing and selling pumpkins could be a charming, albeit unconventional, way to help fund our own future children’s education someday! It’s food for thought, especially as we embrace new responsibilities and joys in our debt-free life.

And now, for the true star of our “debt-free” celebration and the newest member of our family: meet Salsa, our incredibly charming new kitten! This little bundle of fur is our chosen gift to ourselves for successfully conquering our college loans, and he has quickly become the heart of our home. Salsa has rapidly integrated into our daily routine, though his integration often comes with delightful, albeit challenging, disruptions. For instance, getting any focused work done at my computer has become a playful struggle, as Salsa has decided that my keyboard is the absolute best spot for a nap, a playful pounce, or a vigorous cuddle session. He’s incredibly affectionate, constantly seeking attention, and often makes himself comfortable right in the middle of whatever I’m doing. He’s a constant source of amusement, warmth, and purring cuddles, bringing an undeniable lightheartedness to our everyday.
Meet Salsa, Our Adorable Furball
Here’s a good, candid picture of the fur ball himself, captured in all his charming, kittenish glory:

Salsa also has a unique, and sometimes chaotic, way of “helping” me with my photography. His preferred method of assistance seems to involve actively chewing on my camera strap – a habit that’s both endearing in its kittenish curiosity and slightly nerve-wracking for the well-being of my equipment! His playful curiosity knows no bounds, and everything in his immediate vicinity becomes a potential toy or something to investigate, from dangling cords to my latest food prop. Despite the occasional chaos and the constant need to retrieve my camera strap, his energetic presence fills our home with so much warmth, laughter, and unpredictable moments. On a separate, more culinary note, I also managed to sneak in a little preparation for the upcoming holiday season. Here’s a little sneak peek at a festive Thanksgiving dessert I’ve been working on – a true labor of love. I absolutely adore crafting edible turkeys out of various food items; it’s a fun and creative way to bring the holiday spirit directly to the table and always elicits smiles.

Getting More Personal: Finding Strength in Vulnerability and Faith
Beyond the daily happenings and exciting milestones, this month also brought a deeper, more personal journey into my emotional and spiritual landscape. As I candidly shared in our previous ‘Out of the Kitchen’ post from September, I’ve been navigating a period of heightened anxiety. It’s a struggle that has often felt profoundly isolating, a heavy burden carried in quiet moments. Yet, through this very challenge, I’ve experienced profound spiritual growth and a renewed, deeper sense of connection with both my faith and my community.
God has been truly opening up my heart in ways I never anticipated possible. I don’t believe I’ve ever allowed myself to be this vulnerable about what I’m truly experiencing, not even with close friends and family in person, let alone here on the blog for a wider audience. Something that has been deeply impressed upon my heart, a truth resonating with immense power, is that fear and suffering often thrive and deepen in loneliness and quiet isolation. Conversely, there is an incredible, liberating power that comes from exposing your fears to the light, from sharing your struggles openly with others who care, and from courageously asking for prayer and support. This vulnerability isn’t weakness; it’s a profound act of strength, courage, and unwavering faith, allowing healing and connection to begin.
A particular passage from Jennie Allen’s inspiring book, Restless, has resonated deeply with me during this challenging time and become a cornerstone of my reflection: “God wrote suffering into our stories and wants to redeem it for his glory. If we stop shaking our fists at him, we could possibly sit down and see we are running from a life in flames toward a great purpose – one that could never exist without the flames.” This profound quote serves as a powerful reminder that even in our darkest moments, in the midst of pain and uncertainty, there is an inherent purpose and potential for redemption. It encourages me to shift my perspective, to see suffering not as an uninvited enemy to be resisted at all costs, but as a crucible for profound growth and a path toward a greater, divinely appointed purpose that I might not otherwise discover.
Every single day, I am consciously and intentionally planting myself in God’s truth, reminding myself with each breath that He is ultimately in control of all things, even when circumstances feel overwhelming. Some days, this belief comes more easily than others, feeling like a gentle whisper of assurance and peace. But I am continually learning, particularly through my anxiety, that Jesus Himself intimately inhabits suffering. He experienced immense suffering, far beyond what any of us can truly comprehend, during His time on Earth. While Jesus famously asked God to take away His suffering in Gethsemane, He also uttered the profound and transformative words, “yet not my will, but yours be done.” These very words are now echoing deeply within my own heart. Instead of solely pleading for God to remove my suffering or my anxiety, I am shifting my prayer to ask for more of Jesus – more of His abiding presence, His unwavering strength, His boundless peace, and His divine perspective to carry me through each moment.
Friends, your support means the world to me, and I humbly ask for your prayers. Please pray that He would grant me the unwavering courage to continue being authentic and vulnerable, even when it feels uncomfortable or scary. Pray that He would provide me with clear opportunities to actively work through the very things that cause me anxiety, transforming challenges into profound spiritual and emotional growth. And most importantly, pray that He would cast out any lies, deceptive thoughts, or whispers of doubt that try to take root in my mind, replacing them with His truth. Your solidarity and prayers are a powerful lifeline.
And please, I truly mean this with all sincerity: How can I be praying for *you*? I would absolutely LOVE to pray for you, to lift up your burdens and joys before God. Don’t hesitate to reach out and email me at [email protected]. Sharing our struggles and lifting each other up in prayer is a powerful testament to the strength of community and the boundless grace of faith.
