November’s Culinary Escape

November Highlights: A Month of Festive Preparations, Culinary Adventures, and Cherished Moments

As the days grow shorter and the air crisp, we’re thrilled to welcome you back for another “Out of the Kitchen” update, sharing a glimpse into our lives beyond the recipes and culinary creations. November was a wonderfully packed month, brimming with early holiday cheer, meaningful community engagements, a few unexpected challenges, and, of course, plenty of delicious food. Join us as we recount the memorable moments that made up our autumn month, reflecting on the joys, lessons, and connections forged.

An Early Taste of Winter and Heartwarming Family Time

November kicked off with an unexpected, yet undeniably beautiful, snowstorm. While the glistening white blanket transforming our landscape was a picturesque sight, it certainly felt a little early for such a significant snowfall! Despite the premature arrival of winter, it set a cozy tone for the month ahead, hinting at the festive season just around the corner. Shortly after, our home buzzed with delightful chaos as we had the immense pleasure of babysitting our pastor’s four energetic children for three days, allowing him and his wife a much-deserved weekend getaway. It was an incredibly fun, albeit busy, experience filled with laughter, games, and heartwarming moments. Ryan became an instant hit with the kids, especially when he generously shared his vintage Pokémon cards, sparking nostalgic joy and captivating the children with tales from his childhood collection. These moments of connection and service, fostering strong community bonds, are truly what enrich our lives.

Amidst the flurry of activity, we made sure to carve out time for ourselves. One delightful morning, we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast at a charming local crepe place. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, perfect for a relaxed start to the day. Ryan, with his characteristic sweet tooth, savored a mixed berry crepe, a delicate delight bursting with fresh, vibrant fruits and a hint of sweetness. Meanwhile, I opted for a savory crepe omelet, a perfectly satisfying and protein-packed choice that felt both indulgent and wholesome. These small culinary excursions offer a wonderful opportunity to connect and recharge, providing a pause from our busy schedules.

Behind the Scenes: Jingle Jam Preparations and Relaxed Moments with Salsa

A significant portion of our November was dedicated to preparing for an exciting Christmas production at our church called “Jingle Jam.” This highly anticipated event is a vibrant, festive celebration designed to bring joy and holiday spirit to our community. Ryan and I are both deeply involved, contributing our talents to make it a memorable experience. Ryan is taking on the dynamic role of the energetic comic host, bringing humor and lightness to the stage, while I serve as the credible host, guiding the audience through the program with warmth and clarity. We’ve poured countless hours into rehearsing our lines, perfecting our delivery, and ensuring every detail is in place for the big show on December 8th. It’s a true labor of love, and we’re so excited for the opportunity to share this joyous occasion with everyone.

Even with busy schedules and demanding commitments, we cherish the quiet, unplanned moments at home. The second photo perfectly captures a simple, sweet instance of Ryan relaxing with our beloved dog, Salsa. These unscripted interactions highlight the deep bond they share and remind us of the comfort and unwavering joy our pets bring into our daily lives, offering a peaceful counterpoint to our energetic church commitments and holiday preparations.

Celebrating Your Culinary Successes and Embracing Baking Blunders

One of the most rewarding and heartwarming aspects of sharing our culinary journey with you is seeing so many of you recreate our recipes in your own kitchens! This month, it was incredibly heartwarming to receive feedback and inspiring photos from friends on Instagram who successfully tackled our Black Forest Cookies. It brings us immense joy to know that our recipes inspire delicious moments for your families and friends, filling homes with wonderful aromas and flavors. Your culinary triumphs are a constant source of encouragement and motivation for us to keep creating and sharing even more.

However, it’s important to remember that even seasoned food bloggers experience baking setbacks, and sometimes, things just don’t go according to plan! The second photo serves as a humorous and relatable reminder of a recent kitchen mishap. While attempting to bake my renowned Rocky Road Cookies – a recipe I had meticulously tested and perfected back in April, ensuring every ingredient and step was flawless – this particular batch simply didn’t turn out as expected. The texture was off, and they certainly didn’t meet my usual standards. It was a truly puzzling moment, proving that sometimes, even with a foolproof recipe and extensive experience, baking can be an unpredictable art. It’s a valuable lesson in humility and a reminder that perfection isn’t always attainable, even in the most familiar culinary endeavors!

Nourishing Body and Soul: Recipe Triumphs and a Personal Health Update

The positive feedback on our recipes continued this month with another wonderful creation shared by an Instagram friend: our delightful Apple Spice Cake with Caramel Drizzle. She truly outdid herself, and her cake looked absolutely amazing, beautifully embodying the rich, comforting flavors of autumn. We love seeing how you personalize and enjoy our seasonal bakes, making them your own.

On a more personal note, November also included a significant follow-up appointment with my endocrinologist. This year has been quite a challenging yet insightful journey as we’ve worked diligently to understand and address some ongoing hormonal imbalances. These health explorations can be complex, sometimes frustrating, and often require patience and persistence. However, I deeply believe in transparency and sharing my experiences, as I know many of you might be navigating similar paths or simply seeking connection through shared vulnerabilities. If you’re interested in learning more about this personal health journey and what it entails, I invite you to visit my Instagram profile and explore the dedicated highlight aptly titled “hormone journey.” It’s a space where I share more in-depth insights, updates, and resources, hoping to provide support and understanding to others.

Decking the Halls: Our Festive Christmas Tree Tradition

Embracing the holiday spirit with full enthusiasm, we made the joyful decision to put up our Christmas tree a full two weeks before Thanksgiving this year. While that might sound remarkably early to some, it technically only puts us one week ahead of the holiday had Thanksgiving fallen on its typical earlier date! There’s something truly magical about extending the festive season, and our illuminated tree instantly transformed our home into a warm, inviting sanctuary, radiating a sense of anticipation and cheer. However, this year presented a particular challenge: a surprising number of burnt-out bulbs on our beloved tree. It was a time-consuming task to meticulously check each individual light, string by string, but I am incredibly thankful for Ryan’s unwavering patience and dedication. He diligently worked through every single bulb, methodically replacing the faulty ones and ensuring our tree would sparkle brightly throughout the entire holiday season. His support and meticulous effort truly made the process enjoyable and successful.

The second photo proudly showcases our finished Christmas tree, glowing beautifully with a myriad of lights and ornaments, radiating holiday cheer throughout our living space. It stands as a magnificent focal point of our home during this special time of year, symbolizing warmth, joy, and the spirit of togetherness that the holidays bring.

Comfort, Productivity, and Continued Festive Preparations

As someone who works from home and often finds herself feeling the perpetual chill, especially during the colder months, finding the perfect balance of comfort and practicality is absolutely key to staying productive and happy. This month, I discovered my new favorite go-to item: a wonderfully comfy sherpa “house coat” from Amazon. It has quickly become my essential uniform for staying warm and cozy throughout the workday, wrapping me in a cloud of softness. It’s more than just a jacket; it’s a little piece of everyday luxury that makes working from home even more enjoyable and comfortable during the frosty season.

Meanwhile, our commitment to “Jingle Jam” remained a constant and significant focus throughout November. The second photo provides another peek into our dedicated practice sessions at church, where the entire team is working tirelessly to perfect the upcoming Christmas production. The enthusiasm and hard work of everyone involved are truly inspiring, and we’re continually refining our parts and synchronizing our efforts to make the December 8th show an unforgettable and joyous experience for our cherished audience.

Seasonal Recipe Development and Culinary Exploration

One of the exciting perks of being a food blogger is the opportunity to work ahead on seasonal content, ensuring we’re always prepared to inspire your kitchens. In November, I dedicated significant time to developing and photographing several exciting New Year’s Eve recipes. This proactive approach ensures that when the time comes, I’ll have fresh, inspiring content ready to share with you, helping you plan your celebrations with ease and deliciousness. Keep a keen eye out for these festive dishes towards the end of December – they’re specifically designed to add sparkle and culinary delight to your New Year’s celebrations!

Beyond holiday prep, I also found joy in experimenting with new everyday dishes, always seeking efficient and flavorful meal solutions. The second photo features a delicious new one-pot chicken and rice creation that I tried out this month. One-pot meals are an absolute game-changer for busy weeknights, offering maximum flavor with minimal cleanup, making them a true lifesaver for hectic schedules. This particular dish has quickly earned a coveted spot on our list of weeknight favorites, proving both incredibly tasty and remarkably convenient. It’s always exciting to discover new staples for our rotation!

Unexpected Encounters and Festive Outdoor Decor

Our home life took an adorable and rather charming turn when Salsa, our curious canine companion, had a fascinating encounter with a beautiful orange cat that had decided to hang out by our patio door for a good hour or so. Salsa was incredibly curious, observing the feline visitor with intense interest and a wagging tail, clearly intrigued by this new presence. We later learned that this lovely ginger cat is a friendly neighborhood resident, a mostly outdoor cat belonging to one of our neighbors, who often roams freely. Of course, my immediate instinct, true to my nature, was to invite the charming creature indoors for some cuddles and warmth, especially with the chilly weather approaching. However, Ryan, ever the pragmatist and voice of reason, gently reminded me that it’s often best to let outdoor cats stay outdoor. He affectionately calls me “Snow White” because of my consistent urge to care for every animal I encounter, a trait I happily embrace!

Despite Michigan’s typically chilly November weather, we seized one of the rare “warmer” weekends – and by warmer, I mean we still definitely needed hats and gloves, but it wasn’t outright freezing! – to hang our Christmas garland outdoors. It was a delightful task, transforming the exterior of our home with festive greenery and twinkling lights, adding to the growing sense of holiday anticipation. Getting these essential outdoor decorations up before the deep freeze truly sets in is always a satisfying victory, setting the stage for a festive December.

Thanksgiving Delights: Your Creations and Our Culinary Adventure

Thanksgiving is always a special time for gratitude and connection, and this year, we were particularly grateful and incredibly inspired to see the amazing array of festive recipes you all recreated in your kitchens! It truly warms our hearts to know our recipes are becoming a cherished part of your holiday traditions, bringing joy and deliciousness to your family gatherings. We were especially delighted to see your beautiful renditions of our No-Bake Oreo Pie, the decadent and utterly irresistible Reese’s Pie, and the charmingly festive Mini Pumpkin Cheesecakes with Oreo Crust. Thank you so much for sharing your culinary masterpieces with us on Instagram – your enthusiasm and creativity make our work so incredibly rewarding!

Our own Thanksgiving celebration was wonderfully relaxing and filled with warmth, spent in the delightful company of our dear friends, Steph and Neil. Since we typically don’t travel back to Minnesota to be with family for Thanksgiving, being welcomed into their family for the day meant the absolute world to us. It was a day filled with engaging conversations, delicious food, abundant laughter, and cherished memories, truly embodying the spirit of gratitude, community, and enduring friendship.

The day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, traditionally a day for shopping, turned into an exciting new culinary adventure for us: making ribs in the oven for the very first time. Our initial attempt, pulling them out for a late lunch, was met with a bit of disappointment – the ribs were surprisingly chewy and far from the “fall-off-the-bone” perfection we had envisioned. Although they were thoroughly cooked (we made sure to check!), we quickly learned a valuable lesson in patience and technique. We decided to put them back into the oven, opting for a much longer, slower baking process for an additional four hours. The transformation was incredible! They emerged tender, succulent, incredibly flavorful, and absolutely delicious. This experience vividly taught us the true art and magic of slow-baking ribs, solidifying our appreciation for extended cooking times when aiming for ultimate tenderness and taste. Every culinary journey has its learning curves, and this one was particularly satisfying and educational.
