October Culinary Escapades 2014

October’s Kitchen Chronicles: A Month of Baking, Creativity, and Real-Life Moments

Welcome back to another edition of our “Out of the Kitchen” series! As the vibrant colors of autumn painted our surroundings, October unfolded into an incredibly dynamic and memorable month. It was a whirlwind of seasonal baking, exciting collaborations, a few comical kitchen mishaps, heartwarming moments with the kids I nanny, and a dash of personal home improvement challenges. We’re thrilled to pull back the curtain and share a comprehensive look at what truly happened behind the scenes, offering a glimpse into the bustling heart of our home and blog life.

This past month truly lived up to its reputation for being a bustling period. My days were extensively occupied with Halloween baking, a passion that I could easily indulge in all year long. There’s something undeniably charming and creatively stimulating about crafting spooky yet adorable treats that bring smiles to faces. Beyond the seasonal festivities, I’ve also had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with Peanut Butter & Co. on developing an exclusive collection of peanut butter-infused recipes. These special creations are slated for release next year, perfectly timed for the 4th of July celebrations and the “Back to School” season. It’s a fantastic challenge to weave such a versatile ingredient into diverse themes, and I’m genuinely excited for you all to see the delicious results.

On a more personal note, if you recall our previous Out of the Kitchen post, you’ll remember the big news about parting ways with our old couch. Well, the update is… we still haven’t found its replacement! Let’s just say the living room carpet, while soft initially, has lost its charm as our primary seating arrangement. The quest for the perfect couch continues, and we’re optimistically hoping to carve out some time very soon to embark on that essential furniture hunt. Comfort, we miss you!

Baking Fails and Unforgettable Date Nights

October's Sweet & Savory Adventures - Culinary Experiments and Date Nights

Kicking off our visual recap, I must confess to a major baking fail that still makes me chuckle. That ominous black creation you see was ambitiously intended to be an Oreo and marshmallow concoction, somewhat akin to a gourmet Oreo Rice Krispie bar. The vision was grand, but the execution, regrettably, was far from it. It was an unequivocal no bueno situation that swiftly landed in the garbage bin. Every baker experiences these moments, and sometimes, the best lesson is to know when to gracefully surrender! After that culinary misadventure, Ryan and I treated ourselves to a much-deserved dinner date. And the sophisticated destination (drum roll, please)… Five Guys! While perhaps not the epitome of fine dining, it was undeniably delicious and perfectly hit the spot, proving that sometimes, the simplest pleasures are the most satisfying.

Behind the Scenes: Messes, Miracles, and Donuts

Behind the Scenes of Halloween Baking - Donut Disasters and Culinary Efforts

Here’s a genuine behind-the-scenes snapshot from the thick of that Halloween baking frenzy. It paints a rather accurate picture of the organized chaos that often unfolds in my kitchen when creativity takes over. And speaking of chaos, let’s talk about another epic baking incident: the great donut fail. The batter that unfortunately ended up splattered all over the bottom of my oven was, in an ideal world, supposed to be neatly nestled within the donut pan. Such is the unpredictable nature of ambitious baking! Despite the considerable mess and the dramatic loss of most of the batter, I did manage to salvage and bake the three resilient donuts that remained in the pan. My dedication to the cause of a homemade donut, even if it means cleaning oven batter, knows no bounds!

Nannying Fun: Spooky Crafts and Storytime Adventures

Halloween Crafts and Creative Play with Kids - Monsters and Drawings

Beyond the flour-dusted countertops, October was also filled with delightful Halloween-themed activities with the wonderful kiddos I nanny for. We unleashed our inner artists, creating charmingly spooky googly-eyed monsters that now adorn their playroom walls, and filled the driveway with an array of vibrant Halloween drawings. That particular witch drawing you see? That’s my original masterpiece, crafted with immense pride and a touch of spooky flair! Our afternoons were also dedicated to diving into countless Halloween storybooks. Among them all, “Big Pumpkin” consistently stole our hearts and remains a perennial favorite, bringing giggles and a touch of friendly fright to our reading sessions. Engaging with their imaginations through these festive activities is truly one of the most rewarding parts of my week.

A Glimpse Into the Blogger’s Studio (aka My Home)

Behind the Scenes of a Food Blogger's Kitchen Studio - Oreos and Prep

Oh, look who it is! It’s just me, deeply engrossed in the meticulous process of photographing Oreos in a food processor – a surprisingly crucial step for many of my dessert recipes. This shot offers yet another authentic peek behind the curtain. Welcome, dear readers, to my versatile “studio,” which, in the true spirit of a home blogger, fluidly transitions between my kitchen, dining room, and even the laundry room. This multi-functional approach is the daily reality for many creators, showcasing that passion doesn’t always require a dedicated, pristine space. It’s about making the most of what you have and letting creativity flourish wherever it finds a spot, even if that spot is momentarily taken over by kitchen appliances and camera equipment.

The Reality of Blog Life: Props and Creative Clutter

The Reality of a Blogger's Life - Messy Bedroom and Prop Storage

Let’s be candid for a moment: real life is inherently messy, and the same often holds true for the spaces where creativity thrives. This image offers an honest look at our bedroom, which has regrettably morphed into my primary blog prop storage area. The truth is, I’ve amassed quite an impressive, perhaps even excessive, collection of blog props over time. What started as a few charming additions has now grown into an extensive inventory, to the point where I’ve begun to annex the bookshelf in our living room. Space is undeniably becoming a luxury, but each prop, from the antique serving dishes to the colorful fabric backdrops, plays a vital role in bringing my recipes and stories to life. It’s a delightful, albeit slightly chaotic, side effect of dedicated content creation!

More Nannying Creations: Felt Monsters and Art Time

Felt Monsters Craft with Nanny Kids - Creative Fun and Halloween Art

Continuing our creative journey with the nanny kids, one of our favorite activities this month involved crafting these adorable felt monsters! They are incredibly engaging to make, allowing for endless customization and fostering fine motor skills alongside imaginative play. Every monster turns out uniquely charming, reflecting the personality of its young creator. Accompanying this visual is another piece of artwork I drew of them, specifically for Halloween. It’s truly a joy to merge artistic expression with festive themes, especially when it involves capturing the delightful spirit of the children I care for. These moments of shared creativity are precious and contribute so much to the vibrant energy of our days.

A Culinary Success: Ryan’s Favorite Acorn Cookies

Time-Consuming but Cute Acorn Cookies - A Culinary Project

Amidst the baking trials and triumphs, I had a particularly brilliant idea: to craft acorn-shaped cookies, paying homage to Ryan’s favorite animal, the squirrel. The concept was as endearing as the animal itself, and I’m thrilled to report that they turned out absolutely adorable! Each cookie was a miniature work of art, perfectly capturing the whimsical essence of autumn. However, I must admit, they were incredibly time-consuming to produce. Every intricate detail, from the textured cap to the smooth body, required a delicate touch and considerable patience. Despite the effort, the charming outcome made every minute worthwhile. Keep an eye on the blog, because the detailed recipe for these delightful acorn cookies will be making its debut very soon, ready for you to try your hand at this sweet challenge!

Embracing Autumn: Photoshoots and Holiday Baking Prep

Autumn Photoshoot Fun and Early Holiday Baking Preparations

As October drew to a close, Ryan and I embraced the crisp fall air and stunning seasonal backdrops by capturing a few memorable autumn pictures. It was a classic fall photoshoot, complete with vibrant foliage and golden light. You really should have seen the twenty-plus photos Ryan took of me attempting to throw leaves artfully into the air! Each one is hilariously candid, primarily because nothing is ever quite in focus, and apparently, I contort my face into the most peculiar expressions when attempting such feats. Despite the photographic imperfections, the laughter and joy shared during that moment are truly priceless. And on a very exciting note, with Halloween behind us, the holiday baking season has officially commenced! My kitchen is already buzzing with plans and preliminary tests for festive treats to share as we transition into the most wonderful time of the year.
