Summer’s Best Bites & Unforgettable Moments: Our July & August Journey
Summer flew by in a whirlwind of activity, so much so that our usual “Out of the Kitchen” post for July slipped my mind entirely! Now, as we find ourselves already in the heart of August (truly, where does the time go?), I’m thrilled to bring you our very first combined monthly recap. Get ready for a generous serving of everything we’ve been up to over the past two incredibly busy and fulfilling months!
Chicago Calling: A Whirlwind Two-Day Escape

Our summer adventures kicked off with a delightful two-day trip to the vibrant city of Chicago, a place brimming with architectural wonders and culinary delights. Before diving into our travel tales, I have to share a sneak peek from my kitchen: these absolutely divine chocolate and peanut butter swirl cupcakes. Imagine a rich, moist batter infused with both flavors, topped with an equally dreamy swirled buttercream frosting. If you’re a fan of this classic combination, you’re in for a treat when the recipe drops in a few weeks! But back to Chicago – can you guess the iconic landmark we’re gazing out from in the second photo? That’s right, we made a stop at the breathtaking Skydeck at Willis Tower. Standing on ‘The Ledge,’ a glass box extending from the 103rd floor, offered unparalleled panoramic views of the city. It was an exhilarating experience, literally feeling like you’re floating above the urban landscape, taking in every skyscraper and street below. The sheer scale of the city from that height is truly awe-inspiring, a perspective that makes you feel both tiny and incredibly connected to the bustling metropolis.

No trip to Chicago would be complete without a visit to Cloud Gate, affectionately known as “The Bean.” This iconic sculpture at Millennium Park is a marvel of modern art, reflecting the city skyline and the surrounding park in its polished surface. It was incredibly hot that day, but the vibrant energy around The Bean, with everyone capturing unique reflections and playful selfies, made the heat entirely worth it. The second photo transports us to a different kind of wonderland – a candy store! Even as an adult, the sight of endless rows of colorful sweets, stacked high in jars and bins, brings out a childlike wonder. My secret weakness? Gummy candies! I was absolutely mesmerized by the sheer variety: gummies in every color of the rainbow, shaped like everything imaginable, and boasting an array of tantalizing flavors. The temptation was real, almost overwhelming. Did I succumb and buy a bag (or ten)? Surprisingly, no! It was more about soaking in the vibrant, sugary atmosphere and enjoying the visual feast.
A Gluten-Free Dream: Chicago’s Donut Paradise

While the architectural grandeur and cultural richness of Chicago were certainly compelling reasons for our visit, I must confess, there was a specific, irresistible siren call that played a significant role: a legendary donut shop in the city that specializes in gluten-free donuts. For someone with a gluten allergy, finding truly delicious, freshly made gluten-free baked goods is often like discovering a hidden treasure. And let me tell you, this place was a veritable goldmine! The mere existence of such a haven, offering an array of mouth-watering, perfectly crafted donuts that I could safely enjoy, was reason enough to pack our bags and head to the Windy City. I didn’t hold back – I ordered a glorious half-dozen, just for myself! Don’t worry, my self-control did kick in eventually, and I still have a few delectable remnants stashed in the freezer for future cravings. The second photo reveals another significant “reason” for a food blogger like me to visit Chicago: Crate & Barrel. This store is an absolute paradise for anyone passionate about culinary presentation and home decor. The vast selection of beautiful dishes, unique serving platters, stylish linens, and elegant glassware makes it the ultimate playground for finding new props to elevate my food photography. It’s safe to say, my inner food blogger was in prop-heaven!
Celebrating 26: Birthday Wishes & Thoughtful Surprises

Just one day after our return from our Chicago escapade, July brought another joyous occasion: my 26th birthday! This year, instead of a traditional cake, my birthday indulgence took a delightful turn. My cake was, in fact, one of those incredible gluten-free donuts I brought back from Chicago, complete with a single, flickering candle and a heartwarming serenade from my wonderful husband, Ryan. It was a simple, yet incredibly sweet and memorable way to mark another year. The second photo captures another beautiful birthday surprise orchestrated by Ryan. He whisked me away for a surprise picnic dinner, transforming an ordinary evening into a romantic, intimate celebration. He even put together a charming, handwritten book filled with all the things he loves about me – a truly personal and incredibly touching gift that I will cherish forever. These thoughtful gestures truly made turning 26 feel extra special and appreciated.

The birthday surprises didn’t end there! Ryan had one more incredibly thoughtful gift up his sleeve. He secretly had some of my favorite food photos printed and beautifully arranged them on a wall in our living room. It’s such a joy to have my culinary creations displayed in our home, not just as personal achievements but also as a constant source of inspiration. It’s also wonderful when friends and family visit and can see a glimpse into my passion. In a different vein of exploration, the second photo takes us to an incredible antique market I discovered about an hour from our home. This wasn’t just any market; it was a sprawling wonderland featuring over 400 unique booths! It took me a solid three hours just to walk through and absorb everything, my eyes constantly scanning for hidden gems and vintage treasures. And yes, I certainly came home with some fantastic “keepers” – unique pieces that will add character to my home and perhaps even serve as future photography props. This trip also revealed a surprising new interest: I actually found that I quite enjoy the art of bargaining! Who knew?!
Beyond the Kitchen: Demolition Derby & Wedding Wonders

If you happened to catch my previous post about the Cherry Brownie Tart, you’ll already know about one of our most unexpected and exhilarating summer experiences: attending our very first demolition derby! I honestly don’t know how this thrilling spectacle eluded me for so long. Imagine real-life bumper cars, but with much higher stakes, more dust, and a whole lot of roaring engines and crashing metal. It was an absolutely electrifying and immensely entertaining event, filled with unexpected twists and turns. The crowd’s cheers and the sheer adrenaline in the air were contagious. I think it’s safe to say that Ryan and I are now officially fans, and we’re already marking our calendars to make sure we go again next year! Switching gears entirely, the second photo showcases a very special baking project I undertook. I had the wonderful opportunity to create one of my signature cakes for a wedding shower. This particular cake called for an exquisite design featuring delicate, frilly buttercream decorations, which turned out absolutely stunning and added a beautiful touch of elegance to the celebration. Transporting such a meticulously decorated cake was, I confess, quite nerve-wracking, but I’m thrilled to report it arrived at its destination in one pristine, picture-perfect piece!
Culinary Creations: From Caramel Corn to Peanut Butter Pies

My kitchen has been a hive of activity lately, particularly focused on perfecting my caramel corn recipe. The first photo here is a rather humbling example of one of my initial attempts – clearly, not what perfectly coated caramel corn should look like! The caramel stubbornly clumped together as soon as it hit the popcorn, creating a sticky, albeit still tasty, mess. But persistence pays off in the culinary world! I’m happy to report that I’ve since made it three more times, refining the technique with each batch, and I’ve finally, triumphantly, nailed it! Get ready for that perfectly crunchy, sweet, and irresistible caramel corn recipe to make its debut in September. The second photo offers a glimpse into another exciting culinary venture: that’s a whopping twelve jars of peanut butter! I’ve embarked on a thrilling collaboration with a fantastic peanut butter company to develop some unique Thanksgiving pies, each featuring a delicious peanut butter twist. So far, I’ve created a blueberry peanut butter pie that has received absolutely raving reviews – it’s an unexpected but incredibly harmonious flavor combination!

Here’s another little sneak peek to whet your appetite! The dessert in the first photo actually makes use of the very same perfected caramel corn I was just raving about. I can barely wait until September to share this incredible recipe with you all – it’s going to be a fall favorite! Beyond the kitchen, life had its own challenges. The second photo, though a bit hard to read, captures a moment of digital frustration. I was faced with the monumental task of deleting no less than 47,080 items from my computer! It felt like an endless hour of clicking and waiting. I had been wondering for weeks why my computer was running so slowly and why I was constantly running out of space. The culprit? Apparently, simply dragging files to the trash can doesn’t actually delete them from your system; you have to empty the trash can too! A valuable, albeit frustratingly learned, lesson for the future, and a reminder to regularly declutter my digital life as much as my physical one.
Family Visits & Everyday Joys

One of the absolute highlights of these past two months was a wonderful weekend visit from my dad! With our families living a bit of a distance, we typically only get to see them twice a year, so having my dad come visit us was a truly special treat. We filled his visit with fun activities, including a spirited game of putt-putt golf, where friendly competition made for lots of laughs. We also embarked on a delicious culinary tour around town, savoring various local eateries and enjoying good food and even better company. Throughout his visit, one topic of conversation kept resurfacing: the incredibly noisy cicadas! Gosh, they truly are deafeningly loud. Even now, as I’m writing this in the middle of the afternoon, I can hear their persistent buzzing symphony outside. I always thought they were supposed to be nocturnal, but these summer evenings and afternoons are dominated by their unmistakable song.

On a lighter note, feast your eyes on my fabulous new eyewear in the first photo! Do you like my glasses? They’re not just glasses; they ingeniously double as a mustache, a whimsical headband, and even earrings – all at once! My nanny kiddos are incredibly imaginative and talented when it comes to transforming simple pipe cleaners into elaborate and amusing creations. Their boundless creativity always brings a smile to my face. And speaking of creative endeavors, the second photo showcases a truly exciting professional milestone: two of my recipes were published in a magazine this month! Seeing my work, my recipes, and my photographs in print is an incredibly surreal and rewarding experience. I still find myself flipping through the pages, looking at the beautifully styled photos, and marveling, “Wow, I actually made that!” It’s a wonderful validation of all the hard work and passion that goes into food blogging.
