Prioritizing Health: My Personal Hormone Journey

Embracing new goals and a focus on personal well-being this January.

For several months, I found myself in a state of deferral, postponing an important doctor’s visit despite clear signals from my body. My menstrual cycles had become noticeably irregular, and I was battling persistent, frustrating cystic acne—symptoms that strongly pointed towards a hormonal imbalance. While I initially hoped these issues would resolve on their own, the consistent nature of the problems indicated a need for professional attention. Compounding my hesitation was a past history of fainting during blood draws, making the prospect of diagnostic tests a source of genuine anxiety.

However, with the dawn of January, I resolved to face these health concerns head-on. On January 2nd, I gathered my courage and made that crucial appointment, initiating the process of understanding and addressing what was truly affecting my body. This decision felt liberating, a proactive step towards greater well-being. I’ve been openly sharing the details of this deeply personal “Hormone Journey” on my Instagram highlights, offering insights and updates for those who might relate or are simply interested in following along. It’s a testament to the importance of listening to our bodies and taking decisive action for our health.

Beyond personal health, January also saw me honing my creative skills. Capturing compelling letterboard photos, especially when working solo, presents unique challenges. Achieving the perfect angle, lighting, and focus often feels like a delicate dance. Thankfully, my reliable tripod and remote control have become invaluable companions in this process. They allow me the freedom to experiment with composition and timing, ensuring I can execute my creative vision without the need for an extra pair of hands. It’s a satisfying aspect of content creation, transforming a tricky task into a manageable and enjoyable one.

Embracing Home Life: Comfort, DIY, and Culinary Exploration

Our beloved feline companion, Salsa, continued to be a source of immense comfort and joy throughout January. His sweet snuggles and quiet presence remind us of the simple yet profound happiness that pets bring into our home. Whether he’s playfully exploring or simply napping, Salsa’s endearing personality enriches our daily lives in countless ways.

This month also marked a significant practical achievement on the home front. Our kitchen faucet had regrettably started to dispense water accompanied by concerning black floaties, signaling that its time had come. Ever the handyman, Ryan took on the challenge of replacing the old fixture himself. With precision and determination, he successfully installed a new, pristine faucet. There’s an undeniable sense of accomplishment that comes with tackling home improvement projects, and the peace of mind knowing our drinking water is now clear and safe is truly invaluable. This successful DIY endeavor not only enhanced our kitchen’s functionality but also showcased Ryan’s impressive skills.

A First Taste of Sushi and Future Culinary Adventures

Our delightful introduction to sushi, paving the way for new culinary experiences.

January opened our palates to new culinary experiences, thanks to our friends Steph and Neil. When Steph invited us for sushi, my initial response was a candid, “I don’t know?!” Neither Ryan nor I had ever truly explored the world of sushi. Seizing the opportunity to try something different, we accepted the invitation, and it was a delightful surprise! I found myself particularly enjoying the vibrant and flavorful veggie sushi rolls. This enjoyable first experience sparked an exciting idea: we’ve now enthusiastically signed up for a sushi-making class during our upcoming cruise! We’re thrilled at the prospect of learning the intricate art of sushi preparation and expanding our culinary repertoire. It’s amazing how a simple dinner can ignite a new interest and inspire future adventures.

Sustainable Style: Thrifting for Home and Travel

Discovering Hidden Gems at Goodwill

Two distinct thrift store finds: a large, fluffy bear and a modern Threshold brand ottoman from Target, both acquired at great prices.
Showcasing our latest thrifting triumphs – a whimsical bear and a stylish ottoman.

My affinity for Goodwill is well-known, and January reinforced why it remains one of my favorite places to shop. It’s a true treasure hunt, where patience and timing are key to uncovering incredible finds. This month, my perseverance paid off with two fantastic scores. First, I discovered an incredibly charming, giant plush bear—a whimsical addition to our home decor. Even more exciting was finding a stylish Threshold brand ottoman, originally from Target, marked down by a phenomenal 50%! It always sparks a fun debate: which is the bigger “gem”? For me, the joy lies in the hunt and the satisfaction of giving pre-loved items a new life, all while adhering to a budget-friendly and sustainable lifestyle.

Building a Budget-Friendly Cruise Wardrobe

A curated collection of four dresses and one jumpsuit, all acquired through thrifting and clearance for a cruise vacation.
Stylish and affordable cruise outfits, ready for our upcoming adventure.

With our highly anticipated cruise on the horizon, assembling a versatile wardrobe became a priority. As someone who doesn’t typically gravitate towards dresses, I was keen to find stylish options without a hefty price tag. Goodwill, once again, proved to be an absolute lifesaver. I managed to unearth four incredibly cute dresses, each a steal at just $6! These finds are perfect for evening wear and comfortable daytime strolls on the ship. Complementing these, I also snagged a chic jumpsuit for a mere $7 on clearance at Old Navy. I am genuinely thrilled about this jumpsuit; its comfort and effortless style make it ideal for travel. Creating a fashionable yet economical cruise wardrobe has been a fun challenge, proving that smart shopping can yield impressive results for any vacation.

Michigan’s Unpredictable Winter: Ice, Snow, and Extreme Cold

Battling the January Ice Storm

The perils of a Michigan ice storm: Ryan’s struggle with our slick driveway.

January in Michigan brought forth some truly bizarre and challenging weather patterns. We experienced several days of persistent freezing rain that enveloped our entire neighborhood in a thick, dangerous layer of ice. Our driveway, in particular, became an impassable obstacle. The accompanying image perfectly encapsulates the frustration: Ryan, with determination, attempting to drive our car up the incline, only for it to slide relentlessly backward. This frosty battle against nature eventually led to a crucial decision. After a bit of convincing, I persuaded Ryan that investing in rock salt was not just a convenience, but a necessary safety measure to regain control of our property and ensure safer passage.

Surviving the Polar Vortex

The aftermath of heavy snowfall and extreme cold during Michigan’s polar vortex.

As if the ice storm wasn’t enough, the final week of January brought the infamous polar vortex, delivering a truly brutal cold snap. Temperatures plummeted to an astonishing -25 degrees Fahrenheit, compounded by a substantial 12 inches of fresh snow. These extreme conditions brought daily life to a standstill: school was cancelled for all five days of the week, and even essential services like mail delivery and garbage collection were suspended. Our days became a cycle of shoveling, battling the relentless accumulation of snow. We were incredibly grateful when our thoughtful neighbors lent us their snow blower, which made an immense difference in managing the formidable task of clearing our property. Enduring such extreme weather events truly underscores the resilience and community spirit prevalent in Michigan.

Culinary Creativity, Ingenuity, and Cherished Connections

Ryan’s Culinary Adventures: From Soup to Homebrew

Ryan’s delicious homemade Italian wedding soup, a perfect winter comfort food.

Ryan consistently demonstrates a more adventurous culinary spirit than I do, and this month was no exception. He masterfully prepared a delectable batch of homemade Italian wedding soup, featuring his own gluten-free chicken meatballs. It was a truly satisfying and wholesome meal, providing much-needed warmth and comfort during the chilly January evenings. But Ryan’s kitchen endeavors extended beyond cooking; he also embarked on a fascinating new hobby: homebrewing beer! It’s a meticulous process demanding precision and patience, but the anticipation for his first batch is palpable. We’re hoping it will be perfectly fermented and ready to enjoy just in time for the Super Bowl. With 46 bottles in production, we’ll have plenty to sample, share, and certainly discuss!

Creative Photography Solutions and Unnoticed Bonds

A creative photography setup showing a whisk held upright by chocolate chips in a glass covered with a towel, acting as a 'third hand'.
My ingenious “third hand” photography hack for a solo food shoot.

During my photography sessions, there are often moments when I desperately wish for an extra hand. This month, while trying to capture a perfect shot of a whisk, I faced such a dilemma: how to hold the whisk steady while simultaneously operating my camera? Resourcefulness kicked in! My solution involved filling a glass with chocolate chips, covering it with a small towel, and then firmly inserting the whisk handle into the cup. Voila! An instant, stable “third hand.” These small acts of ingenuity are part of the rewarding process of solo content creation.

This image series also captured a sweet, albeit subtle, moment between Ryan and me. We wore semi-matchy outfits to church, a detail that, humorously, went entirely unnoticed by everyone else. Yet, these quiet, shared connections, even if unseen by others, are often the most meaningful aspects of our relationship. For a closer look and more context about our coordinated attire, you can find a dedicated post on my Instagram.

Our charismatic cat, Salsa, possesses an undeniable charm and photogenic quality that makes us believe he would be the absolute cutest cat box model for Amazon! He has an uncanny ability to transform even the most ordinary cardboard box into a luxurious and engaging retreat. His constant curiosity and endearing ability to find comfort and entertainment in simple objects truly add warmth and amusement to our home.

An Exciting Evening at the Professional Tennis Tournament

January also provided a fantastic opportunity for local entertainment. Each year, our area hosts a professional tennis tournament, and this year, we were lucky enough to win tickets! It was a wonderful chance to socialize and meet more of Ryan’s co-workers in a relaxed and engaging environment. The energy of the tournament was infectious, and watching the professional players showcase their incredible skills on the court was thrilling. Events like these are a great reminder to explore and appreciate the local attractions and shared experiences our community offers.
