August Adventures: Baking, Family Fun, Puppy Anticipation, and Honest Reflections
Welcome back to another edition of our “Out of the Kitchen” series! August was a whirlwind of activity, blending cherished family moments, exciting home projects, delightful culinary experiments, and a significant new addition to our household. Join us as we recount the highlights, the lessons, and the genuine everyday happenings that shaped our month, all while looking forward to new beginnings.

Sweet Treats and Furry Photo Bombs
This year, my five wonderful nieces and nephews, who live all the way in Minnesota, get a special treat: each gets to pick a cookie flavor for me to bake and mail to them! It’s become a beloved tradition, a sweet way to connect across the miles. My oldest niece chose strawberry lemonade cookies, and they turned out absolutely fantastic! The vibrant flavors of tart lemon and sweet strawberry blended perfectly, creating a refreshing taste sensation. What truly made them special were the beautiful, intricate swirls of pink and yellow dough, making each cookie a small work of art. They were such a hit, prompting requests for the recipe from family members near and far.
Beyond the baking, life with Salsa, our beloved canine companion, is always full of charming quirks. You know how it is when you’re setting up for a photoshoot – all your props, backdrops, and camera gear are laid out. Well, Salsa has developed a peculiar habit. The moment I bring out my photography boards, he sees them as his personal invitation to relax. He’ll stroll right into the middle of my carefully arranged setup and plop down, making himself completely at home. It’s impossible not to laugh at his antics, even when he’s momentarily disrupting my workflow. He clearly believes he’s the most important subject, and honestly, sometimes he is!

Family Gatherings and Culinary Experiments
August provided a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Ryan’s extended family. We gathered for a lively afternoon, filled with laughter, storytelling, and an incredibly intense bag toss tournament. The competition was fierce, with everyone bringing their A-game. Ryan and I found ourselves on opposing teams, which always adds an extra layer of friendly rivalry to the mix. Despite our best efforts and some impressive throws, both of our teams ultimately succumbed to the superior skills of other family members. But truthfully, winning wasn’t the most important part; it was the joy of spending quality time together, making new memories, and sharing in a bit of competitive fun that truly mattered.
In another exciting culinary endeavor, we attempted something rare in our household: making homemade pizza. This is a big deal for us because, traditionally, we’ve shied away from it. The primary challenge lies in finding a truly good recipe for gluten-free crust. So many attempts in the past have resulted in crusts that were either too dense, too crumbly, or simply lacking in flavor and texture. However, we’re determined to crack the code! This latest attempt showed promise, and we’re now committed to dedicating more time to perfecting our gluten-free pizza recipe. Imagine the possibilities: fresh, delicious, custom-made pizzas right from our own kitchen, overcoming dietary restrictions without sacrificing taste. It’s a project we’re genuinely excited to continue working on, turning kitchen challenges into triumphs.

Welcoming Visitors and Exploring Our New Home
One of the true joys of settling into our new house has been having family visit. This month, Ryan’s mom and two aunts made the trip to see our new home and explore our new surroundings. It was a delightful visit, filled with guided tours of the house, sharing stories about our move, and pointing out all the little details we’ve grown to love. We took them on an extended tour of our town, highlighting our favorite spots and hidden gems. Of course, no tour is complete without a stop at our absolute favorite local ice cream parlor. There’s something so classic and comforting about sharing a scoop (or two!) of delicious ice cream with loved ones, making the experience even sweeter. It was wonderful to share this new chapter with them and see their excitement for our new beginnings.

The Biggest News: A New Puppy is Joining the Family!
Prepare yourselves, because we have the most exciting news to share! We’ve put down a deposit on this adorable little yellow lab puppy, and we are absolutely over the moon! He’ll be joining our family in mid-September, and we can barely contain our excitement. Get ready for an avalanche of puppy pictures because once he arrives, our social media feeds are going to be filled with his cuteness! The anticipation is palpable, and we’re already making preparations for his arrival.
While we’re ecstatic, there’s a tiny bit of nervous energy regarding Salsa. He’s been our sole furry companion for so long, and we’re unsure how he’ll react to a new, energetic puppy invading his space. I’m a little worried he won’t take to the puppy right away; it will certainly be a significant adjustment for him. However, there’s a hopeful sign: Salsa absolutely loves playing with dog toys, even those that aren’t technically his. We’re crossing our fingers that this playful side will extend to his new sibling and that they’ll eventually become the best of friends. We’re committed to a slow and careful introduction, ensuring both dogs feel safe and loved. This new chapter promises much joy, endless training, and countless puppy snuggles.

DIY Office Solutions and Fairground Fun
Continuing our series of home improvement projects, Ryan and I recently tackled framing a giant whiteboard for my office. This DIY project was not only practical but also incredibly budget-friendly, costing us only about $30 for materials. We discovered a fantastic product at Lowe’s called “Mark-R-Board,” which is essentially a whiteboard-type panel. It’s a brilliant and economical alternative if you’re looking for a large, functional whiteboard without the hefty price tag of a pre-framed one. The process involved precise measurements, careful cutting, and secure framing, resulting in a professional-looking and highly useful addition to my workspace. It’s amazing what you can create with a little ingenuity and teamwork!
Switching gears to leisure, we enjoyed a classic summer outing: a trip to the county fair with some good friends. It was a day packed with quintessential fairground experiences. We meandered through the animal barns, admiring everything from prize-winning livestock to adorable baby animals. Of course, no fair visit is complete without indulging in some delicious, greasy fair food – the french fries were particularly satisfying. We also tried our luck at a few carnival games, which was surprisingly entertaining. I have a sneaking suspicion that Ryan is secretly a game junkie; his competitive spirit truly comes alive at the fair, much to our amusement! It was a perfect day of simple pleasures, good company, and creating fun memories.

Kitchen Chaos and Hilarious Mishaps
Our kitchen often transforms into a busy hub of culinary creativity, and this month was no exception. One particular day stands out, captured perfectly in a candid photo showing a flurry of activity: multiple recipes in progress, various ingredients spread across the counters, and the comforting hum of kitchen appliances. It’s a testament to the joy we find in cooking and baking, even when things get a little chaotic. Amidst this organized chaos, a rather comical mishap occurred. In the midst of preparing a delightful dessert, I managed to drop my lens cap directly into a bowl of freshly made whipped cream! It was one of those moments where you just have to stop, stare, and then burst into laughter. A minor setback, easily rectified, but a memorable and amusing kitchen blunder that added to the day’s lively narrative. It’s a gentle reminder that even in our most productive moments, life loves to throw in a sprinkle of humor.

The New Chair: Salsa’s Latest Obsession
We recently received a new armchair delivered from Wayfair, intended to be a designated “dog chair” for our upcoming puppy. Our plan is to train the new dog to stay off the couches but allow him a comfy spot on his own special chair. However, Salsa, our current resident dog, clearly didn’t get the memo about this future arrangement. He has taken to the new chair with alarming speed and enthusiasm! In fact, he’s become utterly obsessed with it, claiming it as his own personal throne within moments of its arrival. He looks so content nestled in its cushions, making it incredibly difficult to tell him otherwise. It seems there might be a territorial battle brewing between Salsa and the new puppy for ownership of this coveted armchair. We anticipate some humorous squabbles and strategic napping competitions in the future, as both dogs vie for the prime seating spot. It’s a delightful problem to have, highlighting how quickly pets can adapt – and stake their claims!

Garage Sale Gems and Future Projects
One of the most thrilling parts of August was stumbling upon a true gem of a garage sale. You know those sales where you just can’t believe your luck? This was one of them! Ryan, with his keen eye for tools and hobbies, hit the jackpot. For an astonishing total of only $100, he walked away with a fantastic haul: a table saw, a complete set of golf clubs, a dart board, and several other useful items. The excitement was palpable! He’s particularly thrilled about the table saw, as it will be an invaluable asset for our next big home improvement project: installing shelves in the garage. This much-needed storage solution will help us organize our tools and supplies, making our garage a more functional and efficient space. Finding such great quality items at an unbeatable price truly made our day and fueled our enthusiasm for future DIY endeavors.

Comfort Food and Creative Renovations
Our culinary explorations continued with a new dinner recipe that instantly became a household favorite: crock pot shepherd’s pie. We discovered this amazing recipe from a fellow blogger, and it’s quickly earned a permanent spot in our meal rotation. The beauty of a slow cooker recipe is the ease and convenience, allowing us to enjoy a hearty, comforting, and incredibly flavorful meal with minimal effort. It’s perfect for busy weeknights and provides that warmth and satisfaction everyone craves. We anticipate making this dish a lot in the coming months, especially as the weather begins to cool.
In the realm of home decor, I’ve embarked on a personal project: painting our bed frame white. It’s a task that requires patience and attention to detail, but the vision of a refreshed, brighter bedroom keeps me motivated. The transformation from its original finish to a crisp, clean white is already making a noticeable difference, adding a touch of modern farmhouse charm to our space. I’m eager to complete this project and will be sure to share the “after” photos once all the coats are applied and the finishing touches are done. It’s these small, personal touches that truly make a house feel like a home, reflecting our style and making our living spaces more inviting.
Opening Up: Embracing New Challenges and Finding Strength in Vulnerability
So, it’s official – we’re getting a dog! A precious little lab puppy will soon be joining our family in September, bringing with him an abundance of joy, laughter, and, undoubtedly, a fair amount of chaos. My emotions are a mix of intense excitement and a touch of apprehension. I know it’s going to be a lot of work, demanding a significant commitment of time and energy, especially for training him well. My peaceful mornings of sleeping in will likely become a distant memory, replaced by early morning walks and puppy cuddles. There will be numerous adjustments to our daily routines, but I genuinely cannot wait for those irresistible puppy snuggles and watching him grow into a beloved family member. As mentioned, the biggest unknown is how Salsa will adapt to this new furry addition. I’m realistically guessing that it will take him a while to warm up to the puppy; it’s going to be a huge adjustment for our senior dog. So, I apologize in advance for the massive amounts of puppy photos that will inevitably flood my Instagram feed! Consider this fair warning.
On a more personal note, and not quite as cute as a puppy, I experienced my first significant bout of anxiety this month since we moved to Michigan. Usually, my anxiety is somewhat predictable, often triggered by specific events like extensive travel or major life changes. However, this flare-up was different; it arrived unexpectedly and caught me completely off guard. My anxiety, in a strange way, is predictable in its physical manifestations. Each time it surfaces, I experience a host of debilitating physical side effects. These symptoms, unfortunately, tend to breed even more anxiety because I instinctively resort to “Web MD-ing” all my symptoms – a habit I strongly advise against! This often leads me down a rabbit hole of self-diagnosis, convincing myself that I have various serious health issues. Eventually, after much internal struggle, I come to the difficult realization that it’s all anxiety-related. It’s incredibly challenging to grasp that something as intangible as anxiety can make you feel like a walking zombie, plagued by persistent headaches, relentless knots in your stomach, sore eyes, and a never-ending cycle of hunger pains often interspersed with moments of gagging when the intensity escalates. In those moments, I truly feel a profound loss of control over my own body, a disorienting and frightening experience.
Why am I choosing to share such a raw and vulnerable experience with you? Because anxiety of any type thrives in silence and isolation. If you never hear about another person’s struggles with anxiety, you might mistakenly believe that your own experiences are abnormal, unique, or something to be ashamed of. But please, my friend, understand that this is far from the truth. I am a perfectly normal person with a fulfilling job, a loving husband, a supportive network of friends, and a strong church family, yet I still navigate periods of intense anxiety. You are absolutely not alone in this journey. I certainly don’t have it all together, and that’s precisely why I make a conscious effort to share both the hard times and the good times with you – because this, in its entirety, is real life, unfiltered and honest.
Every time I endure a bout of anxiety, I find that God teaches me something profound. I’m not entirely sure what the lesson from this particular episode is just yet, but is it strange to admit that, in retrospect, I feel a sense of gratitude for my anxiety? I can assure you, I am never, ever thankful while it’s actively happening; the experience itself is truly awful. However, once I gain some distance from it, once the immediate fog begins to clear, I can often see things with a newfound clarity. There’s an empowering aspect to being thankful for anxiety, because it helps remove the fear surrounding it. It compels me to realign my focus, to intentionally seek rest, and to cultivate a deeper, more profound dependence on Jesus. This time, especially, I found myself clinging to the comforting promise that suffering will eventually end when Jesus calls me home. Until that day, I have come to accept that anxiety is an intrinsic part of my personal story. And because of my anxiety, vulnerability also gets to be a significant part of my narrative; it isn’t the anxiety itself that makes me stronger, but rather the courage to be vulnerable in its presence. It is in sharing my struggles that I find true resilience and connection.
