August has been a whirlwind of activity, marked by exciting new purchases, heartwarming family celebrations, unexpected pet antics, and significant progress on our home improvement journey. Join us as we recount the highlights and adventures that made August truly memorable!

Our new Shark Apex vacuum, ready to tackle any mess!
Embracing Efficiency: Our New Shark Apex Vacuum
There comes a point in every homeowner’s life when the trusty old vacuum cleaner becomes less of a helpful tool and more of a noisy, inefficient nuisance. For us, that moment arrived when operating our old vacuum required wearing earplugs – a clear sign that an upgrade was long overdue. After extensive research and poring over countless reviews, we finally decided to invest in the Shark Apex with DuoClean. This decision wasn’t made lightly; we needed a vacuum that could seamlessly transition between our beautiful hardwood floors and plush carpets, offering superior cleaning power on both surfaces without compromise.
The DuoClean technology, specifically designed to handle both fine dust on hard floors and deep-seated dirt in carpets, was a major selling point. The satisfaction of gliding the new Shark Apex across our floors, experiencing its powerful suction and quiet operation, has been immense. It’s more than just a cleaning tool; it’s a testament to how a small upgrade can significantly improve the comfort and cleanliness of our home. We are absolutely thrilled with this purchase – it’s made household chores feel less like a chore and more like a satisfying task!

Niece’s favorite birthday cookies and a glimpse into our everyday cooking.
Sweet Traditions and Savory Suppers
August brought with it a joyous family celebration: one of my nieces celebrated her birthday! For her special day, she once again chose her absolute favorite treat: strawberry lemonade cookies. It’s a testament to how much she adores them, as this marks the third consecutive year she’s requested the very same delicious cookies for her birthday. There’s something incredibly heartwarming about these consistent traditions, especially when they revolve around such a delightful, specific flavor combination that perfectly captures the essence of summer.
Amidst all the sweet indulgences, I also wanted to share a little proof that our kitchen isn’t solely a dessert factory! The second photo proudly showcases a wholesome, “real food” meal. While baking brings immense joy, our everyday cooking repertoire is rich with nourishing and flavorful dishes. It’s all about balance, enjoying the occasional sweet treat while ensuring our meals are hearty and home-cooked. This photo serves as a gentle reminder that beyond the cakes and cookies, we truly enjoy preparing diverse and delicious everyday meals in our home.

Fast cars and challenging puzzles: August entertainment!
Community Fun and Puzzle Challenges
One of the highlights of our August was attending a thrilling event at our local dirt track, where we eagerly watched the races unfold. The atmosphere at these events is always electric, filled with the roar of engines and the cheers of the crowd. This particular race was made even more special as our pastor participated in the annual “Faster Pastor” race – a wonderfully unique and entertaining spectacle that always brings the community together for some good-hearted competition. It’s an event we genuinely look forward to every single year, offering a blend of excitement and local camaraderie.
Switching gears to a more serene pastime, the second photo captures the start of our latest puzzle project: a detailed depiction of the University of Minnesota football stadium. This puzzle holds particular sentimental value for Ryan and me, as it’s where we both attended school. It’s a lovely way to reminisce about our college days while engaging in a relaxing, collaborative activity. Of course, no puzzle session would be complete without the curious intervention of our beloved cat, Salsa. He loves to “join” us, often by attempting to bite the puzzle pieces, which necessitates the occasional use of a spray bottle – a humorous battle of wits that adds an extra layer of challenge to our puzzling endeavors!

Our new bird feeder brings joy to everyone, especially Salsa!
The Simple Joys of a Bird Feeder
Sometimes, it’s the simplest gifts that bring the most unexpected delight. This August, Ryan’s parents gave us a beautiful bird feeder, and with its installation, we jokingly declared ourselves “full-fledged adults.” There’s something profoundly satisfying about providing for nature, even in such a small way, and watching the local bird population flock to our backyard has been incredibly peaceful. We’ve enjoyed identifying different species and observing their playful interactions.
However, the biggest beneficiary of this new addition has undoubtedly been Salsa. It turns out he absolutely LOVES watching the birds! He spends hours perched at the window, captivated by their movements, chirps, and fluttering wings. His intense focus and occasional paw swipes at the glass provide endless entertainment for us. This little bird feeder has not only enhanced the natural beauty of our yard but has also become a fantastic source of joy and fascination for our entire family, particularly our feline friend.

Discovering new flavors with our local farm share.
Exploring Culinary Delights with Our Farm Share
For a few weeks this month, while friends were out of town, we had the wonderful opportunity to partake in a local farm share. It was an incredibly rewarding experience that connected us directly with fresh, seasonal produce harvested right from our community. There’s a distinct joy in visiting the farm, picking out vibrant vegetables and fruits, and knowing exactly where our food comes from. It fosters a deeper appreciation for agriculture and encourages more adventurous cooking.
This farm share truly inspired our culinary creativity. I found myself falling completely in love with making fresh salsa from scratch, using juicy, ripe tomatoes, crisp onions, and fragrant cilantro picked just hours before. The flavors were unparalleled compared to store-bought varieties. Additionally, we made a delightful discovery: dragon tongue beans! These unique, colorful beans were not something we typically bought, but their tender texture and earthy flavor quickly made them a new favorite in our kitchen. The farm share was a fantastic way to expand our palates and deepen our connection to local, sustainable eating.

Salsa’s sunbath and Ryan’s culinary masterpiece.
Salsa’s Comforts and Ryan’s Masterpiece Meal
This month, we captured a truly sweet moment of Salsa, our beloved cat. He has a particular fondness for finding the sunniest spots in the house, and often, those spots coincide with where I’ve laid out my photography equipment to catch the natural light. The photo perfectly encapsulates his contentedness as he basks on my gear, seemingly supervising my creative process. And, as we’ve noted, his newest pastime involves intently watching the birds outside, adding another layer to his charming daily routine.
The second photo is a tribute to Ryan’s incredible culinary talents. He truly outdid himself by preparing a magnificent “fancy meal” that felt like something straight out of a gourmet restaurant. The star of the dish was a chicken breast expertly cooked with a rich white wine reduction sauce, perfectly complemented by a side of fluffy wild rice and a medley of fresh, perfectly steamed vegetables. Every element was cooked to perfection, showcasing his skill and passion for cooking. It’s always such a treat when Ryan takes over the kitchen, and this meal was a delicious reminder of what a truly great cook he is!

Uncovering blood types and a potential new family member!
Scientific Discoveries and a Compassionate Rescue
Curiosity led us down an interesting path this month: I realized I didn’t know my blood type! In a modern twist, we ordered at-home blood tests from Amazon. It was a fascinating little experiment to conduct, and while we hope for accuracy, the results were quite intriguing. Both Ryan and I discovered we are A+! This shared blood type has led to a fun new nickname from Ryan: “blood buddies.” It’s a silly little detail, but it’s another unique connection we now share, and it’s always interesting to learn more about our own biology.
Perhaps the most unexpected and heartwarming event of August involved a sweet black female cat we found wandering in our backyard. She was quite timid at first, making it a multi-day effort to gain her trust and eventually bring her to safety. We were determined to ensure her well-being, so once we successfully caught her, we immediately took her to the local humane society. Unfortunately, she wasn’t microchipped, making it impossible to find her original owners. However, the good news is she’s now healthy, safe, and available for adoption. The most remarkable part? She looks uncannily like Salsa! This striking resemblance has certainly sparked a lot of discussion in our household, and we’re seriously considering adopting her to give her a loving forever home. It would be wonderful for Salsa to have a look-alike companion!

Personal style victories and creative photography projects.
Hair Styling Triumphs and Sweet Photography Projects
Sometimes, it’s the small personal victories that bring the biggest smiles. For years, I’ve kept my hair relatively short, which, while easy to manage, often limited my styling options. This month, however, I managed to achieve a small triumph: I was able to French braid my short hair! It’s such a simple style, but it felt like a significant accomplishment, offering a refreshing new way to wear my hair. This success also brought a wave of nostalgia, reminding me of my childhood, when my mom would lovingly French braid my hair. It’s nice to reconnect with that cherished memory and be able to recreate a piece of it myself.
In the realm of creative work, August also brought a fun professional opportunity. I had the pleasure of photographing a series of vibrant popsicles for a local popsicle company! What made this project even more special is that the company was started by our dear friends. It’s always incredibly rewarding to support local businesses, especially those founded by people you care about. The photoshoot was a burst of color and sweetness, allowing me to combine my passion for photography with my enthusiasm for cheering on our friends’ entrepreneurial journey. It was a truly delightful assignment!

Digital declutter and the beginning of our bedroom refresh.
Digital Detox and Bedroom Revitalization Project
A common modern-day struggle finally caught up with me this month: my computer FINALLY ran out of space. As anyone who works with photos and videos knows, digital storage can fill up at an astonishing rate. The constant notifications and sluggish performance were becoming unbearable. Taking a deep breath, I dedicated significant time to meticulously cleaning out old files, clearing caches, and organizing my digital life. The relief was instantaneous and immense; I went from having a meager 5 GB of available space to a whopping 258 GB! This digital declutter has not only freed up crucial space but has also significantly improved my computer’s performance, making daily tasks much smoother and less frustrating.
Beyond the digital world, we also embarked on an exciting physical project: painting a feature wall in our bedroom a stunning navy blue. The decision process for the perfect shade was surprisingly arduous, taking an entire day to finalize. What looked perfect online often appeared drastically different in our room’s lighting, requiring multiple swatches and careful consideration. This feature wall marks the first step in our comprehensive bedroom renovation project. For our next phase, we have an ambitious list of plans: we’re going to build and install elegant floating shelves to add both storage and aesthetic appeal, introduce stylish wall sconces for ambient lighting, and tackle a few other design elements to transform our bedroom into a tranquil and sophisticated sanctuary. We’re incredibly excited to see this vision come to life!
