April Highlights: Fun with Friends and Family
Kitchen Projects and Sweet Gestures
This April kicked off with a delightful Saturday spent with my best friend, Ashley, while Ryan was away in San Francisco. It was the perfect opportunity for some girl time, and I lent a hand in adding a vibrant pop of red to her kitchen. The transformation was subtle yet striking, creating a cheerful focal point in her home. See that fun, bright red door behind us in the photo? There’s something incredibly sweet and a little tear-jerking about knowing a small piece of our shared creativity will remain in her home long after I’ve moved away. It’s a tangible reminder of our friendship and the joy we found in that simple project.
Meanwhile, Ryan’s trip to San Francisco wasn’t just for business; he made sure to bring back a taste of the city’s iconic treats. Our second photo captures a sweet Facetime moment with my guy while he was exploring the city. True to form, he visited Ghirardelli Square and returned laden with a generous haul of ALL THE CHOCOLATE for me. His thoughtful gesture brought a big smile to my face and perfectly capped off a weekend of friendship and sweet surprises.

Feline Friends and Creative Ventures
Our beloved feline companion, Salsa, certainly had his own set of routines this April. One of his most endearing habits involved sitting cozily in my lap every morning as I applied my makeup. His soft purrs and gentle presence made those quiet moments a truly sweet start to each day. He’s such a dear cat, always finding a way to be close.
The second photo in this series captures a more vibrant, hands-on activity: the great jelly bean sort! This wasn’t just a fun way to pass the time; it was a precursor to a delightful baking project. The meticulously sorted jelly beans ultimately led to the creation of these adorable and delicious jelly bean Easter egg cookies, which were a huge hit and brought a festive cheer to our kitchen. It’s amazing how a simple sorting task can transform into such a creative and tasty outcome!

Generosity, Laughter, and Self-Care Moments
Friendship took center stage once again when a wonderful group of my sweet friends and I embarked on a shopping mission. Our goal? To curate a special surprise package for another dear friend who had recently made the big move to Nashville. There’s a unique kind of energy when several women descend upon Target together – it’s both exhilarating and, dare I say, a little dangerous for our wallets! We spent a delightful time filling Jess’s package with an array of thoughtful goodies, imagining her excitement upon receiving a piece of home from her beloved friends. It was a heartwarming reminder of the enduring bonds we share.
The second image from this memory captures a rare moment for me: wearing my hair down. It’s not often that I opt for this style, so I felt it was important to document it. Sometimes, seeing myself with a different look is just the encouragement I need to step out of my comfort zone and experiment more often. It’s a small detail, but these little personal observations add so much to the tapestry of our daily lives. LOL!

Hair Hopes and Easter Mishaps
Speaking of hair, the thought of cutting my hair short has been a recurring one for years. It’s a significant change I’ve contemplated for a long time, yet I’ve never quite taken the plunge. This month, Ryan, always ready for a bit of fun, helped me explore this idea in a playful way using a silly online website that lets you try out different short hairstyles virtually. It was entertaining to see various “short dos” on my face, giving me a better visual of what a dramatic chop might look like. What do you all think? Should I finally go for it?
Our Easter celebration included a memorable, albeit slightly humorous, flower delivery from Ryan. He bought me flowers, but upon inspection, they were, unfortunately, half-dead. His reasoning? He thought it was fitting for Resurrection Sunday, believing I could “resurrect” the flowers. While his sentiment was sweet, the reality was they were indeed quite dead. Don’t be fooled by the photo; they appear nice because he cleverly angled them to show only their “good side.” It was a funny moment that added a touch of lightheartedness to the holiday.

Celebrations and Cozy Companions
April also brought a wonderful celebration for Meg’s 30th birthday! My bible study group threw her a fantastic fiesta party, complete with vibrant decorations and a lively atmosphere. Abbey, with her incredible eye for detail, created the cutest photo spot, adorned with all sorts of fun props she discovered on Amazon. It was a joyful occasion, filled with laughter, good food, and cherished company. The festive decor has me thinking a Cinco de Mayo party might just be next on our celebration agenda!
Back home, Salsa continued his adorable antics. Sometimes, after a long day of photography or crafting, I admit I get a little lazy and forget to put my photo supplies away immediately. A few days might pass, and during this time, Salsa discovered a new favorite napping spot: right on top of my scattered equipment. I suppose he found the soft bags and various items surprisingly snuggly. It’s always a treat to catch him in these quirky, comfortable poses.

Wellness and Wonderful Connections
Taking a moment for self-care, I finally got to use up a birthday gift Ryan gave me way back in July – a much-needed massage! It was incredibly relaxing. The massage therapist also offers those unique massages where they actually walk on your back, a technique that always fascinates me. While I didn’t opt for that particular method this time, I couldn’t resist taking a picture of the intriguing contraption they use. It’s always interesting to see the different approaches to wellness and relaxation.
The second photo brings us back to my friend Ashley, whom I mentioned at the beginning of this post. Ashley is an incredibly dedicated nanny – in fact, that’s how we initially met, as I also used to work as a nanny. She truly is the world’s best nanny, always going above and beyond for the children in her care. One morning, I was hanging out with her and her nanny kiddo at the mall. We spent time riding the escalator up and down repeatedly, purely because she knew how much fun it would be for the child. It’s moments like these that highlight her selfless and joyful approach to caring for others.

Beyond the Kitchen: Embracing Change and Navigating Inner Landscapes
A Farewell to Illinois and Cherished Moments
And just like that, April flew by, friends. This month has certainly been one for the books, marking the end of an era for us. We were blessed with so many beautiful, warm days, which I tried to soak up as much as possible, doing my best not to let the recent gloomy, rainy weather dampen my spirits. April was our last full month here in Illinois before our big move to Michigan, and every moment felt precious. We made a conscious effort to spend quality time with our cherished friends, knowing these memories would soon become even more valuable. I found myself holding onto those moments with a quiet intensity, savoring every laugh and every shared experience.
In preparation for our departure, we’ve been diligently knocking a few final items off our Illinois bucket list. This included taking leisurely walks around our beloved neighborhood and favorite local park, enjoying the familiar sights and sounds one last time. We also indulged in delicious macarons – a true yum! – and made sure to visit a few of our favorite local eateries for one final, memorable meal. For a while, I felt like I was handling the entire moving process like a seasoned champion, managing logistics and goodbyes with a composed demeanor. That is, until Thursday of last week.
Confronting the Wrecking Ball of Anxiety
Without warning, my anxiety returned with the force of a wrecking ball. I felt completely blindsided and utterly caught off guard by its intensity. As I’ve shared before, my anxiety manifests very physically. My mind, in an attempt to protect me, convinces my body that it’s in a state of survival, triggering a cascade of uncomfortable physical symptoms. Every single time anxiety creeps back into my life, I find myself forgetting just how awful and debilitating it can be. The unpredictability of these physical symptoms often leaves me feeling unreliable, as I can’t anticipate how I’ll feel from one day to the next. For a planner like myself, this lack of control is incredibly unsettling and, ironically, generates even more anxiety. It’s a frustrating, self-perpetuating cycle.
A significant part of my anxiety stems from this core pattern: I become anxious about a specific event or situation, which then triggers a host of physical symptoms. Subsequently, I become anxious *about* those physical symptoms themselves. In the past, I used to fear that these physical sensations would last forever, a terrifying thought. However, I am immensely thankful to sweet Jesus for the gift of hindsight. Now, I can look back on previous bouts of anxiety, recognizing that they always came to an end. This perspective brings a profound sense of comfort and hope, reminding me that this current wave, too, shall pass.
Finding Strength and God’s Perspective
This particular round of anxiety has felt different from past experiences. I can distinctly feel a greater reservoir of strength within me to navigate through it. I’m finding myself able to be more proactive in managing its effects, rather than allowing it to completely swallow me whole. This newfound resilience is something I attribute greatly to the opportunity I’ve had over the last two years to work consistently with a therapist. Our sessions have provided me with invaluable tools, coping mechanisms, and a deeper understanding of my own mind, empowering me to face these challenges with more grace and effectiveness.
While the thoughts of moving to a completely new town – finding new friends, establishing a connection with a new therapist, discovering a church home, and building an entirely new community – can feel incredibly overwhelming, I’ve been actively trying to shift my perspective. I’ve taken to looking at all of these changes through what I imagine to be God’s perspective, or at least my best interpretation of it.
I imagine that He is incredibly excited for us. I picture Him having planned this entire move and this new season as a beautiful, intricate chapter in our story for a very long time. He can’t wait for us to experience everything this new season holds and to uncover all the wonderful things He has planned for us. He has, in my heart, already picked out the perfect church for us, and already knows the incredible friends we will do life with in Michigan. He understands that we are scared and worried about the unknown, but I hear Him gently whispering, “Trust me. It’s going to be good. It’s going to be so much more than you can imagine.” This faith-filled outlook brings an immense sense of peace amidst the uncertainty.
Looking Ahead: Our Michigan Chapter
As we close out April and prepare to physically move our lives, our hopes are set firmly on the future. We anticipate the beauty of Michigan, the fresh opportunities, and the chance to build a new home, not just physically, but spiritually and socially as well. There’s an excitement that intertwines with the nerves – a readiness to embrace the unknown, knowing that every step is part of a larger, divinely orchestrated plan. We are eager to discover the new routines, the local gems, and the new faces that will soon become familiar. This move isn’t just a change of address; it’s a profound journey of growth, faith, and expansion, and we are ready to welcome it with open hearts.
