Escaping the Kitchen July August 2018

Summertime Chronicles: Our Unforgettable July & August Adventures

The transition from July to August was a whirlwind of activity, marked by a significant trip back to our roots in Minnesota to reconnect with family and friends. This made it challenging to post our usual “Out of the Kitchen” update for July, but it also means we have an abundance of wonderful memories to share from both months! Get ready for a comprehensive recap of our summer journey, filled with celebrations, sweet moments, and exciting decisions.

Friends gathered for a Fourth of July BBQ, enjoying the humid summer evening before fireworks.

Celebrating Independence Day & Cherished Cuddles

Our July kicked off with a vibrant Fourth of July celebration. We hosted dear friends for a delightful backyard BBQ, savoring grilled treats and good company. The weather was intensely humid, a classic summer characteristic that, surprisingly, helped keep the pesky mosquitoes at bay, allowing us to enjoy the evening without constant swatting. Later, we joined an even larger group of friends to watch a spectacular fireworks display, a perfect end to a patriotic day. The first photo captures the relaxed atmosphere of our BBQ gathering.

The second photo, however, tells a different, more tender story with our beloved cat, Salsa. It captures one of those rare, precious moments when Salsa decides to cuddle. His usual independent nature means these instances are few and far between, almost always occurring when he believes I’m sound asleep or completely unconscious. I often drift off to sleep only to wake up later and find him cozied up beside or on top of me. There’s truly no better feeling than stirring awake to his soft purrs and gentle presence, knowing I can cherish his snuggles before he realizes I’m awake and returns to his usual aloof self. It’s these unexpected moments of affection that make pet ownership so incredibly rewarding.

Our Annual Blueberry Harvest & Culinary Creations

July brought with it one of our favorite annual traditions: blueberry picking! We’re fortunate to live in an area surrounded by numerous berry farms, each offering a unique charm and an abundance of fresh, ripe blueberries. The sheer joy of wandering through the rows, hand-picking plump, juicy berries directly from the bushes, is an experience we look forward to every year. It’s not just about the harvest; it’s about connecting with nature and the simple pleasure of gathering food straight from the source. The vibrant blue hues against the green leaves always make for a picturesque scene, as seen in the accompanying photo of our brimming basket.

And of course, the absolute best part of blueberry picking is the delicious parade of blueberry-infused goodies that inevitably follow! This year was no exception. Our kitchen transformed into a blueberry bakery as we whipped up several delectable treats. We made a rustic yet elegant blueberry galette, its golden crust encasing a sweet, bubbling berry filling. Fluffy blueberry muffins, a tried-and-true family favorite, filled the house with an irresistible aroma. And for breakfast, we enjoyed stacks of homemade blueberry pancakes, each bite bursting with the fresh flavor of summer. There’s something incredibly satisfying about enjoying the fruits of your labor, especially when they taste this good!

A car odometer displaying exactly 100,000 miles, marking a significant journey milestone.

Milestones on the Road & Thrills at the Race Track

We hit a significant milestone in July when one of our cars officially crossed the 100,000-mile mark! Of course, such an achievement demands proper documentation, and a photo of the odometer was essential. This particular car is Ryan’s daily driver, but by a stroke of luck, he had swapped cars with me and left it at the airport. This meant I had the privilege of witnessing the odometer tick over to that impressive six-figure number. It brought back fond memories; the only other time we celebrated a car reaching 100,000 miles was during our honeymoon road trip to Duluth, Minnesota, making this milestone feel extra special and a lovely echo of our past adventures together.

The second photo captures an entirely different kind of automotive excitement: a thrilling day at a car race. Neither Ryan nor I grew up attending car races, but it was a popular pastime when we lived in Illinois, and we quickly discovered it’s equally beloved here in Michigan. We decided to embrace the local culture and give it a try. It turned out to be incredibly fun! The roar of the engines, the blur of speed, and the electric atmosphere were captivating. We were incredibly grateful for the advice from our friends who suggested bringing earplugs and protective glasses; these proved to be absolute lifesavers, making the experience much more enjoyable and comfortable. It was a fantastic way to spend an afternoon, proving that sometimes trying something new can lead to unexpected enjoyment.

Celebrating 29: A Birthday Filled with Surprises

July also held a very special day for me: my 29th birthday! Ryan, always thoughtful, kicked off the celebration by making me the most adorable tiny pancakes for breakfast. Looking back at the first photo, I’m pretty sure I’m still half asleep, but the joy of the gesture and the deliciousness of those miniature pancakes certainly shone through. It was a sweet and simple start to what would be a memorable day.

My main birthday wish was to revamp my office space, so we embarked on a road trip down to Ikea. The second photo captures a moment from our extensive excursion, where I was on a mission to find the perfect new office furniture to inspire productivity and creativity. It was a long but ultimately successful trip, yielding several new pieces that have already transformed my workspace. To top off the birthday food tour, we also made a stop at an incredible gluten-free bakery. As someone who navigates dietary restrictions, finding truly delicious gluten-free treats is always a special occasion, and this bakery did not disappoint. We left with an assortment of delectable goodies, ensuring the birthday festivities continued on a sweet note.

The birthday surprises kept coming! After our epic five-hour journey through Ikea, Ryan had another wonderful treat in store for me: a relaxing couples massage. It was an absolutely heavenly experience, a perfect way to unwind after a busy day and truly indulge in some much-needed pampering. The first photo captures our blissful post-massage glow – we were utterly relaxed and rejuvenated. It was a thoughtful and incredibly appreciated gesture, making my birthday feel truly special and luxurious.

The second photo proudly displays my birthday donut! It seems donuts are steadily becoming my signature birthday treat, a delightful tradition I’m happy to embrace. While I frequently bake cakes and other desserts throughout the year, there’s something uniquely special about a really good gluten-free donut. It feels like a rare indulgence, a perfectly crafted delight that makes my birthday feel distinct and sweet. It’s a simple pleasure, but one that brings immense joy and a wonderful memory to look back on.

Our family gathered around a table sharing a meal, a warm scene of connection during our Minnesota visit.

A Homecoming to Minnesota: Family & Friends

The first weekend in August marked a significant journey as we flew back to Minnesota, our home state, for a much-anticipated visit with our families. These trips are always incredibly special, offering a precious opportunity to reconnect and create new memories. Some of my absolute favorite moments with my family revolve around the simple act of sharing a meal together at the table. There’s an undeniable warmth and intimacy that comes from breaking bread, sharing stories, and catching up on life’s happenings. Beyond the culinary delights, we also enjoyed a refreshing swim, making the most of the beautiful summer weather and adding a splash of fun to our reunion. The first photo perfectly captures one of these cherished family meal times, a true highlight of our visit.

Ryan and I posing together at our 10-year high school reunion, smiling amongst old friends.

Our Minnesota trip also included a fun and nostalgic event: our 10-year high school reunion! It was quite a blast to see so many familiar faces and reminisce about our formative years. A fun fact for those who don’t know: Ryan and I actually attended the same high school, making the reunion a shared experience for us. Among our closest friends from high school, we’re the only ones who currently live outside of Minnesota, so this reunion was an extra special chance to catch up with everyone. It was wonderful to see how much everyone has grown and changed, while still retaining the core friendships that blossomed during those high school days. The energy of reconnecting with old classmates, sharing laughs, and recalling shared memories was truly invigorating. It reinforced the lasting bonds forged in our youth.

A humorous behind-the-scenes shot of Ryan bending down awkwardly to take a photo, acting as my 'faux-tographer'.

Behind the Lens: The Making of Our Memories

Ever wondered what goes into getting those perfect shots for the blog? The first photo offers a humorous peek behind the scenes, revealing how Ryan typically positions himself when he’s taking pictures for me. Given that he’s significantly taller, he often has to bend down into some rather comical postures to ensure the camera is level with me. It’s a common sight, and I’ve affectionately dubbed him my “faux-tographer” for his dedication and often awkward but always successful efforts! His willingness to contort himself for the sake of a good photo is just one of the many reasons I appreciate him so much. It highlights the collaborative effort behind much of the content you see here, adding a touch of humor to our creative process.

The second photo continues our behind-the-scenes theme, but with a professional touch! My incredibly talented friend and photographer, Miranda, recently took some brand new headshots for me. It was an absolute pleasure working with her, and I’m beyond thrilled with the results. These new professional images will soon be popping up across my various platforms, so keep an eye out for them! They represent a fresh look and an exciting new chapter, and I can’t wait to share the polished outcome of Miranda’s fantastic work with all of you.

A dish of homemade pasta salad, our first attempt, presented neatly on a table.

Culinary Experiments & Salsa’s Royal Perch

In a rare moment of kitchen collaboration, Ryan and I decided to tackle making pasta salad for the very first time. It felt like an event significant enough to warrant a photograph, capturing our inaugural attempt at this classic summer dish. We had high hopes, envisioning a refreshing and flavorful side. While the effort was commendable, and it was certainly an experience, I have to admit, it didn’t quite hit the mark. The final product wasn’t as good as we’d hoped, leaving us realizing that our pasta salad skills are definitely a work in progress! It was a good lesson that not every culinary adventure results in a masterpiece, but it was fun to try something new together.

The second photo shifts focus to our furry king, Salsa, regally perched on his throne – a magnificent chair I scored for a mere $15 at a garage sale! This chair, with its grand presence, quickly became known as “the king’s chair” in our home, and it seems Salsa wholeheartedly agrees with the title. He loves to recline in it, surveying his domain with an air of contented superiority. It’s truly amazing how a simple garage sale find can become such a beloved piece of furniture, especially when it’s claimed by our precious pet. His comfortable posture and knowing gaze perfectly encapsulate his charming personality, reminding us daily of the joy he brings into our lives.

Two behind-the-scenes shots of food photography, featuring delicious fall recipes being styled and photographed.

Anticipating Autumn: Behind the Scenes of Fall Recipes

Even as summer winds down, my mind is already eagerly anticipating the cozy flavors and comforting aromas of autumn. This past week, I’ve been deep in the creative process, diligently working on developing and testing a variety of exciting new fall recipes. It’s always a thrill to transition from lighter summer fare to the richer, heartier dishes that define the autumn season. The two behind-the-scenes pictures provided here offer a glimpse into the magic happening in my kitchen and photography studio. They show snippets from the photoshoots, illustrating the careful styling, lighting adjustments, and overall effort that goes into creating visually appealing content for you. These images are a testament to the passion and dedication involved in bringing delicious, seasonal recipes from concept to your screens, and I can’t wait to share the final results and flavors with you very soon!

Salsa’s Quirks & Halloween Hints

And finally, what would an “Out of the Kitchen” post be without a few more adorable (and sometimes mischievous) cat photos of our furry companion, Salsa? He’s recently developed a charming new habit of laying directly behind my computer monitor on my desk. While it’s undeniably cute to have him close, he does manage to take up a surprising amount of space, often creating a challenge for my workflow. And, true to his regal nature, he’s not particularly fond of it when I need to move my mouse, often giving me a disapproving glance as if I’ve disturbed his peaceful slumber or important surveillance duties. The first photo perfectly captures him in his new favorite, albeit slightly inconvenient, desk-side spot.

The second photo showcases Salsa in another delightful pose, where he’s seemingly added himself quite naturally to our home decor. He blends right in, almost as if he were a carefully chosen decorative element himself, effortlessly enhancing the aesthetic with his fluffy presence. Or perhaps, given the time of year, he’s already getting into the spirit of things and hinting that he’s ready to start decorating for Halloween! His playful curiosity and ability to make any space his own continue to bring endless amusement and warmth into our home. Whether he’s acting as a furry paperweight or a living decoration, Salsa always finds a way to brighten our days and remind us of the simple joys of having a pet.

Opening Up: Reflections on Michigan Life & Future Plans

As we close the chapter on July and August, we’re also wrapping up our second full summer here in Michigan. It’s been a season truly packed with fun, marked by countless memorable moments spent with cherished friends and exploring various local events. While our first summer in Michigan felt a bit more transient, as we were still settling into our new home and hadn’t yet formed many deep connections, this summer has truly felt like our first authentic Michigan summer. We’ve built stronger relationships, discovered more of what this beautiful state has to offer, and truly begun to embed ourselves in the community. It’s a wonderful feeling to start feeling truly at home here.

Ryan and I have also established a really positive and rewarding routine of hitting the gym a few days a week after work. Our focus has been on weightlifting, an activity we both genuinely enjoy and find incredibly satisfying. It’s not just about the physical benefits; it’s also a fantastic way to spend quality time together, motivate each other, and decompress after a long day. We’ve both been thrilled to see the consistent progress we’ve been making, feeling stronger and healthier with each session. This shared fitness journey has added another layer of connection and accomplishment to our daily lives.

Beyond the gym, much of our summer has been delightfully spent on simpler pleasures: tackling yard work to keep our outdoor space looking its best, indulging in frequent ice cream runs to combat the summer heat, and taking leisurely walks, exploring our neighborhood and enjoying the natural beauty around us. These everyday activities, while seemingly small, contribute significantly to our overall happiness and sense of well-being.

A significant spiritual experience for us this August was participating in “21 Days of Prayer” through our church. This is a program orchestrated twice a year by the Church of the Highlands in Alabama, and I had deeply enjoyed it back in January, so I was eager to join again this month. For 21 consecutive mornings, there’s an hour-long worship and prayer session, which can be live-streamed from home or attended at your local church. It was truly awesome to commit to getting up early, heading to our church, and intentionally carving out that dedicated time each morning to spend in communion with the Lord. This daily practice brought a sense of peace, focus, and spiritual growth that profoundly impacted our start to each day.

For those of you who have been following along in our previous “Out of the Kitchen” posts, you might recall me mentioning that Ryan and I were discussing a potential six-month relocation to Texas for his job. After much thoughtful deliberation, prayer, and weighing all the pros and cons, we’ve come to a firm decision: we’ve chosen to stay right here in Michigan. We both feel an incredible sense of peace and excitement about this decision. While the prospect of a new adventure in Texas certainly held its appeal, we realized the value of continuing to grow our roots and nurture the relationships we’ve established here. We’re excited to further invest in our community and deepen our connections in Michigan.

And, as an extra bonus to our decision to stay, we’re thrilled to announce that we’re actively talking about getting a new fur friend for Salsa towards the end of the month! We believe a companion would be wonderful for him, and we’re excitedly anticipating the prospect of welcoming another furry member into our little family. Stay tuned for updates on that exciting development!
