February’s Adventures: An “Out of the Kitchen” Monthly Recap

Exploring Home, Heart, and Hobbies This Past Month

Welcome back to another edition of our “Out of the Kitchen” series, where we take a delightful detour from our usual recipes and home decor tips to share a glimpse into our everyday lives. February, despite its brevity, was packed with cozy moments, exciting projects, family celebrations, and plenty of pet shenanigans. Join us as we recount the highlights, from DIY home improvements to cherished date nights and heartwarming family traditions.

Pawsitively Adorable Moments: Our Furry Friends

Salsa the cat relaxing in a warm clothes dryer

Our curious cat, Salsa, discovered a new favorite relaxation spot this month: the warm clothes dryer! It seems he has a particular fondness for cozy, enclosed spaces, and the lingering warmth from a freshly dried load was simply irresistible. It’s always amusing to see the quirky habits our pets develop, and Salsa’s preference for the dryer has certainly added a few laughs to our routine. While he clearly enjoys his warm retreat, we always make sure it’s completely safe and supervised for his little adventures.

Following one of Salsa’s cozy naps, we captured another precious moment of our furry family members. The second photo perfectly encapsulates the serene comfort of my boys just lounging around, a common and much-loved sight in our home. These simple, unscripted moments of companionship and relaxation are truly the heart of our everyday life, reminding us to appreciate the quiet joy pets bring to a household.

Date Night Delights & Arcade Nostalgia

A full rack of BBQ ribs on a plate at a steakhouse

For a much-needed date night, Ryan and I ventured out to a beloved local steakhouse. It was the perfect opportunity to unwind and indulge. I, being a true fan of comfort food, opted for a glorious whole rack of ribs – perfectly tender, smoky, and absolutely delicious. These evenings out are so important for reconnecting and enjoying good food in a relaxed setting.

Our evening didn’t end there! After dinner, we embraced our inner children and headed to a classic arcade. There’s something incredibly nostalgic and exhilarating about playing old-school games, from competitive racing to shooting galleries. We laughed, competed, and racked up tickets, eventually trading them in for an assortment of miniature dinosaurs. It’s a wonderful reminder that sometimes the simplest pleasures, like arcade games and silly prizes, create the best memories and keep our spirits light.

Sweet Family Traditions & Culinary Explorations

One of my favorite family traditions involves my nieces and nephews: for their birthdays, each gets to choose any kind of cookie, and I bake and mail them a fresh batch. This year, my youngest niece picked a truly unique and delightful flavor combination: strawberry lemonade cookies! They are surprisingly easy to make, typically involving just one box of strawberry cake mix, one box of lemon cake mix, and a few other staple ingredients. The vibrant flavors and cheerful colors made them a huge hit, and I love being able to send a little piece of homemade joy across the miles.

Beyond my baking endeavors, I’m always impressed by Ryan’s adventurous spirit in the kitchen. He loves to experiment and try cooking new things, which makes for exciting meals at home. This month, he took on the challenge of making homemade hash browns from scratch. It’s always a process of trial and error, but seeing him dedicated to mastering new dishes is truly admirable. His culinary curiosity inspires us both to step outside our comfort zones and explore new flavors.

Curiosity, Pranks, and Everyday Discoveries

Oh, Salsa! His boundless curiosity often leads him to interesting, and sometimes precarious, situations. Here, he decided to stick his head between the stair rails. While it makes for a cute picture, I’m always a little nervous he might get stuck! We gently guided him out, reminding ourselves that cats will always find the most intriguing spots to explore, even if it gives their human a minor heart attack. His antics keep us on our toes and fill our home with endless entertainment.

In a hilarious turn of events, Ryan and I stumbled upon some fantastic picture frames at Goodwill – complete with the previous owners’ photos still inside! Ryan, ever the prankster, immediately saw an opportunity. He used these frames to play a witty prank on one of his co-workers, swapping out a colleague’s family photo with one of the Goodwill finds. It was a good laugh for everyone involved! This little adventure also served as a funny reminder to myself: always remember to remove personal photos before donating frames to charity!

Celebrating Love and Comfort

Heart-shaped Valentine's Day pizza with pepperoni

Valentine’s Day in our household is often a relaxed and cozy affair. This year, we celebrated with a homemade heart-shaped pizza, adorned with plenty of pepperoni. It’s a simple yet incredibly sweet way to mark the occasion, focusing on delicious food and shared moments at home rather than elaborate plans. Creating special meals together, even something as simple as a festive pizza, adds a unique charm to our celebrations and makes everyday moments feel extraordinary.

Capturing the perfect family photo can often be a comical challenge, especially with a lively pet! This past Valentine’s Day, we managed to get what we lovingly call “the best one we got” – a candid snapshot that truly reflects our family’s unique dynamic. It’s not always about perfection, but about cherishing the real, sometimes goofy, moments.

Adding to the charm, even Salsa was captivated this month by the incredible talent of the Olympic ice skaters on television. It was a funny and heartwarming sight to see him so focused on the screen, perhaps dreaming of his own quadruple axel. These unexpected shared experiences, whether with loved ones or our pets, are what make life so rich and memorable.

Home Improvement: The Shiplap Saga Continues

A custom-made jigsaw puzzle with a personal photo

Amidst our daily routines, Ryan surprised me with a custom jigsaw puzzle this month, featuring one of our favorite photos. It was such a thoughtful and unique gift, providing a wonderful opportunity for a relaxing and engaging activity together. Puzzles are a fantastic way to unwind, challenge your mind, and spend quality time without screens, and we thoroughly enjoyed piecing together our special memory.

Our major home project for this season, the shiplap wall around our fireplace, has been a significant undertaking. The second photo here captures Ryan diligently working on installing the shiplap. It’s a process that requires precision, patience, and a fair amount of elbow grease, but we’re thrilled with the transformation it’s bringing to our living space. Seeing the vision come to life board by board is incredibly satisfying.

Newly installed shiplap on the front of a fireplace

Ta-da! We’ve made fantastic progress on our shiplap project. The entire front face of the fireplace is now completed, and it’s already making a dramatic difference in the room’s aesthetic. While this is a significant milestone, we still have the sides of the fireplace to tackle. After that, the finishing touches will involve carefully puttying all the nail holes, meticulously sanding for a smooth finish, applying a coat of primer, and finally, painting it to perfection. It’s a journey, but the end result will undoubtedly be worth every effort.

On a more personal note, I celebrated a small but significant victory this month: my hair finally fits into a proper ponytail again! For someone who used to wear their hair in a pony constantly before a short cut, this is a big deal and a welcome return to a familiar style. It’s a small detail, but these personal milestones, no matter how minor, always bring a sense of accomplishment and a smile.

Digital Milestones and Organized Chaos

If you’ve been following our journey for a while, you’ll recognize this familiar sight: Salsa in his absolute favorite spot! It’s become his signature cozy corner, and seeing him contentedly nestled there is always a comforting reminder of his presence in our home. He truly makes himself at home in the most adorable ways.

Speaking of milestones, I’m thrilled and incredibly grateful to announce that I reached a significant achievement this month: 20,000 followers on Instagram! This community means the world to me, and seeing it grow is incredibly motivating. Thank you so much for following along, for your support, comments, and for being such an integral part of this blogging adventure. Your engagement truly inspires me to keep creating and sharing.

This cat, Salsa, always finds a way to get into something new! Whether it’s exploring forbidden counters or inspecting every new package, his inquisitive nature keeps life interesting. He’s a master of finding the most inconvenient, yet utterly charming, spots to perch and observe.

Meanwhile, my office space continues to evolve. I truly love having a dedicated room where I can house all my blog-related “junk” – from photography props and crafting supplies to various prototypes and project materials. It’s incredibly functional for my work. However, the flip side is that I don’t always love the inevitable task of cleaning and organizing it. It’s a constant battle between creative chaos and a desire for pristine order!

Two hands holding an Amazon Prime delivery box

February also brought us some exciting deliveries courtesy of Amazon Prime. There’s always a little thrill in receiving those brown boxes, wondering what new gadget, ingredient, or household essential awaits inside. It’s a convenience we truly appreciate for keeping our projects and daily life running smoothly.

And finally, a little sneak peek! The second photo offers a tantalizing glimpse of an upcoming Easter recipe that I’m incredibly excited to share with you all. It’s been a joy developing and testing this festive treat, and I can’t wait for you to try it. Stay tuned for more deliciousness coming very soon!

February Reflections: A Month of Seasons and Successes

February was undeniably a low-key yet surprisingly dynamic month for us. The weather certainly kept us on our toes! We experienced an intense week of snow, which meant our shovels got a significant workout. It was a true winter wonderland, but the constant shoveling was certainly a physical challenge. However, as quickly as it arrived, the snow melted, giving way to an unseasonably warm spell that I absolutely adored. The fluctuating temperatures made for an interesting transition from deep winter to an early taste of spring.

Beyond the weather, both Ryan and I kept busy with our various commitments. Our schedules were filled with bible studies, invigorating gym sessions, competitive racquetball matches, and a multitude of meetings. It genuinely felt as though the month simply flew by in a blur of activity. It’s always a peculiar feeling how February, being only a few days shorter than other months, somehow manages to create the illusion of passing at an accelerated pace, leaving us wondering where the days went.

My shiplap wall project around the fireplace continues to be a labor of love. While the front section is now beautifully installed, I’m still working on finding that elusive burst of motivation to tackle the sides of the fireplace. Once the boards are all in place, the next meticulous steps will involve puttying all the nail holes to achieve a seamless surface, followed by thorough sanding to ensure perfect smoothness. After that, it’ll be time for a clean prime coat and, finally, the much-anticipated final paint application. So, yes, this project won’t be completed in a flash, but I can already see how magnificent it’s going to look. The main thing driving me to finish is the desire to finally decorate my mantel again – I miss having it adorned with seasonal touches and cherished items!

I may not have had an abundance of profound insights to share this month (a shocker, I know!), but it was a month of steady progress, quiet joys, and genuine connections. It’s a valuable reminder that even the quieter months are rich with experiences and growth. We’re already looking forward to March and all the new adventures it will bring. Be sure to check back next month for another “Out of the Kitchen” update!
