From Stove to Story: January 2016

January Unveiled: A Month of Milestones, Memories, and Growth

Welcome back to our beloved “Out of the Kitchen” series! After a whirlwind December filled with festive cheer, extensive travel, and cherished family commitments (which happily led us to skip last month’s update), we’re absolutely thrilled to kick off the new year with a fresh installment, diving deep into all the adventures, domestic happenings, and personal musings from January. This month has proven to be a vibrant tapestry of small triumphs, unexpected challenges, and quiet joys, truly setting a positive and reflective tone for the year ahead. Join us as we recount the charming chaos, the creative pursuits, and the profound personal growth that collectively shaped our January.

January 2016 Recap Image 1: Cat Salsa on oven, Jenga game

This January, we celebrated a truly significant milestone: the complete payoff of our student loans! Our spirited feline companion, Salsa, who joined our family as a “we did it!” present, seems to be celebrating in his own unique, albeit mischievous, way. He’s discovered a new, delightfully warm perch – right on top of the oven! While his ingenuity in finding cozy spots is admittedly charming, our ongoing battle to keep him off the kitchen counters has certainly intensified. This challenge has us constantly seeking effective, yet pet-friendly, strategies to maintain both kitchen hygiene and Salsa’s safety. Fellow cat owners, we’re open to any and all advice! In a different vein of domestic enjoyment, we recently hosted a lively evening with friends for an intense game of Jenga. Ryan, with his characteristic meticulous precision and strategic mind, takes this seemingly simple stacking game to an entirely new level, transforming each block removal into a suspenseful, nail-biting moment. These moments of shared laughter and friendly competition truly highlight the simple yet profound pleasures of home life and good company.

January 2016 Recap Image 2: Behind the scenes of orange cranberry granola, Ryan feeding squirrel

Here’s a sneak peek behind the scenes from a recent food photography session for our orange cranberry granola recipe. As I continue to hone my craft in food blogging and photography, I’ve realized the critical need for a taller tripod to capture those perfect overhead shots. Thankfully, some incredibly helpful friends alerted me to an amazing deal on Amazon, and a brand-new, much-needed tripod is already on its way, due to arrive this Tuesday! This upgrade promises to significantly enhance the quality and versatility of my recipe visuals. In a heartwarming moment captured separately, Ryan indulged in one of his unique hobbies: feeding the local squirrels. While some might question the wisdom of befriending wildlife, Ryan finds immense joy in these interactions. If you look closely at the second photo, you can see just how close Ryan and this particular squirrel became, sharing some nuts in a truly sweet display of interspecies trust. As for me, I opted to observe this charming interaction from a safe and respectful distance – it was quite a sight to behold!

January 2016 Recap Image 3: Vintage washing machine repair, puppy chow chocolate spill

January truly felt like the month of the washing machine fiasco. Our trusty, albeit ancient, washing machine, a relic from the 1970s, finally decided to stage a revolt. What initially seemed like a straightforward belt replacement quickly spiraled into a cascade of related breakages and unexpected complications. This turned a seemingly simple DIY fix into the longest, most drawn-out appliance repair project we’ve ever undertaken! However, immense gratitude goes out to my incredible husband, whose unwavering patience and innate problem-solving skills eventually brought our vintage machine back to life. Hooray for handy partners who love a good challenge! In another kitchen misadventure, while preparing a batch of delicious puppy chow for our football puppy chow recipe, I had a rather comical mishap. Instead of neatly pouring the melted chocolate mixture into the waiting bag of cereal, I accidentally managed to pour a significant amount of it all over the side of the bag. It was a messy, “whomp whomp” moment for sure, but a reminder that even in the kitchen, perfection isn’t always the recipe for a good story.

January 2016 Recap Image 4: Blogger's panicked face after puppy chow spill, berry beet smoothies photoshoot

Ah, the first photo perfectly captures a genuine moment of panic! You might just be able to spot the subtle distress on my face, a direct result of the aforementioned puppy chow incident. While frantically trying to salvage the situation during a photo shoot, a friend lightheartedly (and rather hilariously) joked that, given the mess, it seemed I was now making “cat chow.” We all had a good laugh amidst the chaos, a testament to finding humor in unexpected kitchen mishaps. The second photo offers a much more aesthetically pleasing behind-the-scenes look at the creation of these simply gorgeous berry beet smoothies. With their vibrant color and healthy ingredients, these smoothies are not only a delicious and nutritious treat but also happen to be absolutely perfect for celebrating Valentine’s Day or any occasion where you want to add a splash of beautiful, natural color and a boost of goodness to your day.

January 2016 Recap Image 5: Two sleeping boys (cat and human) touching hands, Salsa batting at chocolate pretzels

Aww, feast your eyes on this incredibly heartwarming sight: my two sleeping boys, sharing a tranquil moment, even touching hands! It’s undeniably the cutest thing ever, a precious snapshot of the sweet bond that forms within our little family. These quiet, tender moments are truly the ones that make life so special. In a more playful scene, captured in the second photo, I indulged in a bit of a guilty pleasure on a recent Monday night: watching “The Bachelor” while dipping an entire bag of pretzels into melted chocolate. As the chocolate-covered pretzels were cooling, our curious cat, Salsa, couldn’t resist. He kept batting playfully at them with his paw, clearly intrigued by the melty goodness and perhaps hoping for a taste. It’s a constant reminder of his playful spirit and endless curiosity.

January 2016 Recap Image 6: Salsa drinking milk, reflection on pet ownership

You know that feeling when you turn your back for just ONE second? Well, that’s precisely what happened here. I stepped away from the kitchen for barely a moment, and someone (ahem, Salsa) immediately discovered the milk. Naturally, I quickly snapped this photo to capture the mischievous moment before gently getting him down from his precarious position. I feel I should offer a lighthearted apology for the perhaps massive quantities of cat pictures gracing this post. However, before getting Salsa, I honestly never fully understood those “crazy pet people” who doted endlessly on their furry companions. Now, having experienced the unconditional love, endless entertainment, and deep companionship that comes with pet ownership, I completely get it. Salsa has truly stolen our hearts, transforming us into proud, slightly obsessed cat parents, and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

January 2016 Recap Image 7: The Today Show Instagram feature, Ryan and author's first quarterly blog meeting

We received some incredibly exciting news this month! The Today Show, a nationally recognized morning program, featured one of my recipes on their Instagram account! It was such a thrill to see our work highlighted on such a prominent platform. In typical fashion, I casually texted my mom a few days after it happened, saying, “Hey mom, I forgot to tell you, The Today Show shared one of my recipes!” Her immediate and enthusiastic response, which you can see in the photo, perfectly captures the shared excitement and joy. It’s truly a validating moment for all the hard work that goes into blogging. The second photo captures another significant milestone: Ryan and I held our very first quarterly blog meeting. This strategic session was immensely helpful; Ryan’s insights were invaluable in setting concrete goals for the upcoming year and establishing a more structured weekly schedule for all blog-related tasks. I’m still diligently trying to convince him to join the blog full-time – imagine the possibilities with his brilliant mind fully dedicated to our creative endeavors!

Getting More Personal: Embracing Life’s Rhythms

The past month has actually been remarkably good, especially in contrast to the usual stresses of December. The holiday season, with its often-hectic travel schedule, tends to exacerbate my anxiety, particularly given my gluten allergy. Packing copious amounts of my own snacks and meals to ensure safe eating options can be quite a logistical challenge and a source of constant worry. This year, however, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of myself, specifically recognizing and embracing my inherent nature as a homebody. In the past, I’ve often labeled this trait as a negative, feeling a subtle pressure to conform to a more outwardly adventurous lifestyle that I perceived in others. It felt like everyone around me traveled frequently and loved it, while I found myself perfectly content staying in one city, or preferring a single-day trip over an extended journey.

This realization has been transformative. There’s a newfound sense of peace in having absolutely nothing on the calendar in terms of travel. It’s allowing me the grace to simply be who I am, to find joy and contentment within the familiarity of home and routine, rather than constantly striving for external validation through travel experiences. Embracing this aspect of myself has been crucial for managing my anxiety and fostering a greater sense of inner peace. It’s a powerful reminder that self-acceptance is often the most rewarding journey of all.

On a related note, I haven’t mentioned this often, but I’ve been working as a nanny for the same wonderful family for four years. This month, I made the bittersweet decision to adjust my hours with them. Cutting back on my nannying commitments has freed up significant time, allowing me to dedicate more focused energy and creativity to the blog. This shift marks a pivotal moment in my professional journey, aligning my daily efforts more closely with my long-term passions.

Accompanying this change, Ryan, with his exceptional organizational skills, helped me develop a comprehensive weekly schedule for all blog-related tasks. Previously, I often felt like a “crazy woman,” attempting to cram as much as possible into a single day and essentially working all the time, leading to burnout. Now, I have clearly allocated time slots each week for specific activities: dedicated photography sessions, brainstorming new content ideas, meticulously scheduling social media posts, engaging with our community, and even administrative tasks. This structured approach has not only reduced stress but has also dramatically increased my productivity and efficiency, allowing for a healthier and more sustainable work-life balance.

Beyond the professional and personal shifts, January also marked the exciting start of a new Bible study titled “The Storm Inside.” Its powerful tagline, “Trade the chaos of how you feel for the truth of who you are,” immediately resonated with me. One particular area this study addressed, which I personally struggle with, is truly believing that God can forgive my sins completely. It’s incredibly easy to fall into a cycle of feeling the need to continually ask for forgiveness and apologize, almost as if keeping a running tally of one’s own shortcomings. However, the study meticulously listed a ton of powerful verses, all talking about the profound truth that Jesus has taken our sins upon Himself. It emphasized that God doesn’t keep a list of them; He does not associate us with our sins any longer. Once we genuinely ask for forgiveness, we are forgiven – completely and irrevocably – and we don’t need to continually offer sacrifices or feel guilt for that sin.

These specific verses were profoundly encouraging and brought immense peace and liberation. Isaiah 43:25 reminds us, “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.” Similarly, Isaiah 44:22 declares, “I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you.” Psalm 103:12 paints a vivid picture: “as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” Micah 7:19 promises, “He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.” And in the New Testament, Acts 10:15 states, “What God has made clean, do not call common,” while Hebrews 10:17 powerfully confirms, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” Grasping these truths has been a journey from internal chaos to profound peace, a true testament to the boundless power of divine love and forgiveness. Praise Jesus indeed!

As we close out this detailed look at our January, we’re filled with gratitude for the lessons learned, the laughter shared, and the quiet moments of growth. It’s been a month of significant shifts, both big and small, laying a strong foundation for what’s to come. We hope you enjoyed this peek into our “Out of the Kitchen” world and found some inspiration or a moment of connection.
