June Life Update: Our Michigan Journey Unfolds – Home, Heart, and New Horizons
Welcome back to our “Out of the Kitchen” series! This month, we’re pulling back the curtain on everything that’s been unfolding in our lives. June has been a whirlwind of settling into our new Michigan home, discovering fresh routines, and embracing the exciting challenges that come with relocation. From our furry co-worker’s daily antics to building community and finding our stride in a new city, there’s been no shortage of memorable moments. Join us as we reflect on the significant steps we’ve taken in establishing our new life, sharing both the joys and the ongoing adjustments as we transform a house into a home.
Adventures with Salsa: Our Feline Co-Worker’s Charm

Life with a pet is an endless source of joy and, let’s be honest, endless photo opportunities. Our beloved cat, Salsa, has truly embraced his role as both our furry co-worker and daily entertainer in our new surroundings. His curiosity and playful spirit make every day more interesting, providing constant amusement amidst the busy schedule of settling in. In our new Michigan home, there’s a super high ledge that has quickly become his favorite perch. From this elevated vantage point, he surveys his domain with a regal air, seemingly oblivious to Ryan’s gentle disapproval. After all, trying to stop a determined cat from exploring new heights is a battle rarely won!
Beyond his preferred lofty lookout, Salsa has also developed a keen affection for all the moving boxes that continue to arrive – they provide a seemingly endless supply of temporary forts, scratching posts, and unexpected napping spots. He’s also incredibly adept at ‘helping’ with furniture assembly, often choosing the most crucial piece to sit on, ensuring we take a moment to appreciate his fluffy presence amidst the chaos of building new things. His playful interference and constant companionship have been a wonderful, comforting constant during these transformative weeks, making our new house instantly feel more like home. Salsa’s unique personality injects a dose of warmth and humor into our daily lives, proving that even small creatures can have a huge impact on our overall happiness.
Building a Home: Workouts, Neighbors, and Making Community Connections

One of the most exciting developments in our new house is the creation of a dedicated workout space. Gone are the days of pushing all the living room furniture against the walls just to make room for a quick exercise session! Now, we have a proper basement workout area, which has truly transformed our approach to fitness. It feels incredibly liberating to have a designated spot for our active lifestyle, a place where we can consistently prioritize our physical well-being. The first photo captures Ryan and me, ready to dive into a productive session in our new gym. This dedicated space has already made a huge difference in our ability to stay consistent and motivated with our health goals, fostering a healthier routine from the comfort of our own home.
Beyond our personal health, a significant focus this month has been on building connections within our new Michigan community. The second photo beautifully illustrates one of our favorite ways to reach out: delivering homemade cookies to our closest neighbors. We managed to visit 15 homes, which might sound like a lot, but my goal was to personally greet every single household on our street. There’s something deeply important to us about knowing the people we live alongside, fostering a sense of community right from the start. These initial interactions go beyond simple pleasantries; they are about creating a supportive network and truly becoming part of the neighborhood fabric. We were fortunate enough to have some truly wonderful conversations and genuinely enjoyed meeting many of our new neighbors. These initial interactions have been incredibly promising, laying the groundwork for what we hope will be lasting friendships and a strong sense of belonging in our vibrant new Michigan neighborhood.
Embracing the Creative Mess and Cherishing Date Nights

Transitioning into a new home invariably comes with a period of delightful disarray, and my office has been no exception. For several weeks, it resembled what could only be described as a beautiful, organized chaos – a testament to the ongoing unpacking and setup process. The first image perfectly captures this phase, with Salsa, ever the curious supervisor, making himself comfortable amidst the piles. While it’s still very much a work in progress, having a dedicated space, even if currently cluttered, brings a sense of purpose to my workday. We’re slowly but surely transforming it into a functional and inspiring environment, and Salsa’s presence always adds a touch of warmth and charm, making the mess feel a little less daunting and a lot more endearing. It’s a journey of organization, and every cleared surface feels like a small victory.
Amidst the busy days of unpacking, decorating, and establishing new routines, Ryan and I made a concerted effort to revive our regular date night schedule, recognizing the immense importance of nurturing our relationship through these significant transitions. The second photo showcases one of our recent, wonderfully low-key date nights. We decided to shake things up by playing a surprisingly challenging game of memory match using an entire deck of cards. It sounds simple, but it led to a lot of laughter, some playful banter, and a healthy dose of competition! These moments, whether a grand outing or a simple game at home, are invaluable for reconnecting, de-stressing, and creating new memories together in our new setting. They remind us to pause, enjoy each other’s company, and appreciate the unique journey we’re on, strengthening our bond with every shared smile.
Warm Welcomes, Local Delights, and Behind-the-Scenes Insights

Relocating to a new state can be both exhilarating and a bit daunting, so receiving a warm welcome makes all the difference. We were absolutely delighted when Aunt Darlene surprised us with an incredible “Welcome to Michigan” gift basket! The first photo captures this thoughtful gesture, brimming with local goodies and treats that immediately introduced us to the flavors of our new home. It was such a sweet and fun way to experience some of Michigan’s local offerings right from our doorstep, a true taste of regional hospitality. These acts of kindness truly underscore the warmth and generosity of family, making our transition feel even more special and connected, reinforcing the feeling that we are truly welcomed into this new chapter.
On a slightly different note, the second photo offers a peek behind the curtain of my creative world – a candid “behind the scenes” shot from a recent photoshoot. It’s a reminder of the often less glamorous, more physically demanding side of capturing beautiful images. This particular shot, taken while I was likely attempting an awkward angle or reaching for something just out of grasp to get the perfect perspective, highlights a recurring thought: I really, *really* need to invest in a step ladder! It’s funny how some realizations stick with you; I’m pretty sure I voiced this exact need two years ago, and here I am again, still contorting myself for the shot. Perhaps this is the month I finally make that essential purchase and make future photoshoots a little less precarious and a lot more efficient. It’s a constant learning process to refine my craft and my setup!
Cultivating Healthy Habits and Discovering Quirky Finds

Embarking on a healthier lifestyle often requires moments of true resolve and decisive action, and the first photo captures one such powerful act: a moment of strength where we consciously chose to throw away a container of ice cream. It might seem like a small gesture, but these intentional decisions are crucial steps in our ongoing journey towards a more health-conscious household. We’re actively working on making healthier choices regarding our diet, and getting rid of temptations is a vital part of that process. It’s about setting ourselves up for success by proactively removing the “bad stuff” from immediate reach, thereby making healthier eating the easier and more accessible option. This moment symbolizes our commitment to positive change and self-discipline.
In stark contrast to our healthy living efforts, but equally amusing, is Ryan’s recent discovery showcased in the second photo. He stumbled upon what can only be described as the world’s largest pepper grinder! It’s an absolutely enormous contraption that made us both laugh out loud the moment he brought it home. The sheer scale of it is comical, an impressive novelty that certainly stands out in our kitchen. It instantly prompted the humorous question: “Fresh pepper, anyone?” While it might be a bit over the top for daily use, this quirky find certainly adds a touch of unique charm and humor to our kitchen, highlighting the unexpected joys of exploring new stores and discovering unique, conversation-starting items in our new city.
New Wheels, New Freedom: Our Two-Car Household & Finding My Library Sanctuary

One of the most significant and liberating changes this month has been the addition of a second car to our household. Living off a bus line for the first time in a while made this a practical necessity, and the freedom it has afforded me is immense. I’m no longer “stuck” at home during the day, which means I can freely explore our new city, run errands with ease, and simply enjoy the newfound mobility that comes with having personal transportation. This shift has truly opened up a world of possibilities for daily life, enhancing our independence and convenience. The first photo captures our new vehicle parked securely inside our garage – a genuinely strange and exciting experience for us, as we’ve never had a garage before. The convenience, security, and added storage space of having a dedicated parking area are perks we’re quickly appreciating and integrating into our new routine.
Speaking of new discoveries, the second photo gives a glimpse into my new favorite work spot: our local library. While the picture doesn’t fully capture their grandeur, the library boasts massive, towering windows that flood the entire space with natural light, creating an incredibly serene and inspiring environment. It’s quickly become my go-to place for focused work sessions, offering a welcome change of scenery from my home office. The quiet ambiance, combined with the expansive views outside and the abundant light, fosters a wonderful sense of productivity and calm. Finding such a perfect sanctuary for work, a place that nourishes both creativity and concentration, has been an unexpected but thoroughly welcome bonus of living in our new Michigan community. It feels like a hidden gem waiting to be fully explored.
A City United: Remembering the June Flood

Just two weeks ago, our new city experienced a pretty severe flood, a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictable power. The image here, taken just four houses down from where we live, vividly illustrates the extent of the water accumulation. We were incredibly fortunate; our specific portion of the road gently inclines uphill, which meant we were miraculously spared from having water on our street or, more importantly, in our basement. We were truly able to praise Jesus for protecting our home during such a widespread and disruptive event that impacted so many others. The floodwaters took a full four days to recede, leaving significant damage and widespread flooding across various parts of the city. It was a sobering event that highlighted both the vulnerability of urban infrastructure and the immense resilience of the community as everyone pulled together to support one another during the recovery. Witnessing the impact firsthand, even from a safe distance, underscored the profound importance of community spirit and preparedness in the face of natural challenges.
Salsa’s Posing Prowess & Sweet Surprises

Our little superstar, Salsa, truly believes he’s destined for the spotlight! The first photo perfectly captures his dramatic flair, almost as if he’s declaring, “I’m ready for my photo shoot, Mom!” His playful confidence and natural photogenic charm never fail to bring a smile to my face. He loves being the center of attention, and honestly, we love giving it to him. His personality is truly one of a kind, making every day a little brighter and infinitely more entertaining. Whether he’s mid-pounce or striking a regal pose, Salsa’s antics are a constant source of joy and photographic inspiration, embodying the very essence of a beloved family pet.
And speaking of delightful surprises, the second photo features an incredibly exciting delivery: Enlightened ice cream! This wonderful treat arrived unexpectedly in the mail, and it felt like hitting the jackpot – a truly pleasant and unexpected gift. For those unfamiliar, Enlightened is similar to Halo Top, offering a healthier, high-protein ice cream option that remarkably doesn’t skimp on flavor. And let me tell you, it is *realllly* good. It’s hard to beat the joy of receiving delicious food, especially a guilt-free dessert that aligns with our healthier eating goals, right in the mail! It was a perfect, sweet reward after a busy month of settling in and a delightful treat to celebrate our small victories in wellness.
Opening Up: Reflections on Life in Michigan
Embracing Authenticity Over Strict Schedules
Friends, I must confess, getting these “Out of the Kitchen” posts out “on time” has always been a bit of a struggle for me. There’s no official deadline, of course, but as the end of each month approaches, I find myself thinking, “AHHHH, I absolutely have to write my out of the kitchen post!” Then, seven days inevitably pass, and suddenly we’re already a full week into the new month. At that point, a small, nagging voice often suggests, “Maybe you should just skip this month and combine it with the next.” However, I’ve come to realize that you, our wonderful readers, probably don’t care *exactly* when these updates are posted, right? The true value lies in the content itself – the shared experiences and genuine reflections. I made a conscious decision not to be legalistic about it. Who cares if it’s a week into the new month? An update, whenever it arrives, is always better than no update at all. Plus, I genuinely love looking back at these posts myself. They serve as a personal journal, a cherished snapshot of our lives and growth, and I know I would be genuinely bummed if I missed a month. So, here we are, taking a deep breath and sharing our full June happenings, delays and all!
Settling In: From 600 Square Feet to Open Spaces
Whew! It truly feels monumental to say that we’ve now completed one full month under our belts here in Michigan and in our new house. The transition from a cozy, 600-square-foot apartment to a much more spacious home has been significant and overwhelmingly positive. I absolutely adore having more space – it feels like a luxury we never knew we needed, offering room to breathe, create, and simply exist without constantly shifting furniture. However, with more space comes new responsibilities, and I’m quickly learning that yard work is not my forte. I confess to having absolutely no green thumbs, and we’ve inherited what is currently a giant, unruly mess of a flower garden. Our long-term plan is to dig everything up and essentially start over, creating a landscape that truly reflects our style and requires less intense maintenance. But that project is still on the horizon because we only just finished the seemingly never-ending deck project! That task alone consumed about six dedicated weeks of our time and energy, demanding patience and persistence. Yet, the feeling of accomplishment now that we have a cleanly painted deck is immense. We’ve even just purchased some beautiful patio furniture, and I’m incredibly excited to envision mornings spent out there, enjoying breakfast and quiet time with Jesus. It feels like we’re finally starting to truly enjoy the outdoor spaces of our new home, transforming a construction zone into a serene retreat.
Finding Our Rhythm and Familiar Comforts in Michigan
In general, both Ryan and I feel like we’re gradually settling into a comfortable rhythm here in Michigan. Each day brings a bit more familiarity with the city’s streets, shops, and hidden gems, and that growing sense of knowing our way around is incredibly comforting. It might sound silly, but I genuinely believe that the transition has been made a little easier by being able to shop at the same grocery store chain. We had Meijer back in Illinois, and happily, they have Meijer here in Michigan too. This small piece of continuity, the familiarity of the aisles and product layouts, has provided a subtle but powerful sense of normalcy amidst so much change, a small anchor in a sea of newness.
Beyond grocery runs, we’re actively working to build our community here. I’ve recently gotten involved with a women’s bible study, which is my very first Beth Moore study, and I am completely hooked! Her teaching style is incredibly engaging and insightful, and it’s been a wonderful way to connect with other women, share faith journeys, and deepen my understanding of scripture. Ryan, equally, has found his own niche, discovering some fantastic guys to play racquetball with – a great way for him to stay active, socialize, and build new friendships. We are still diligently in the process of “church shopping,” which can be a challenging and vulnerable journey. It’s difficult to feel fully connected to a community until you find that spiritual home where you feel you belong. However, Lord willing, we trust that we’ll discover our place very soon, and we are patiently seeking the right fit for us, believing that God will lead us to the right community.
Navigating Wellness: Mental Health and the Enduring Power of Connection
On a deeply personal note, in terms of managing anxiety, I have been doing exceptionally, remarkably well. It honestly kind of shocks me when I truly reflect on it, considering past struggles. Sometimes, I wish I could call up my former therapist from Illinois and share how genuinely good I’m doing, because I know she would celebrate with me with such enthusiasm and pride. Through my counseling journey back in Illinois, I discovered a profound appreciation for the process of therapy and the invaluable insights it offered into understanding myself better, particularly in managing anxiety triggers and developing coping mechanisms. This self-discovery journey is something I value deeply, which is why I am continuing to see someone here in our new city. Maintaining this support system is crucial for my ongoing mental wellness and personal growth, ensuring I continue to thrive and adapt in this new environment with a strong foundation of self-awareness and care.
Of course, one of the biggest challenges of moving is the geographical distance from cherished friendships. I really miss seeing my “old” friends in person and keeping up with the day-to-day details of their weekly lives – the casual coffee dates, the spontaneous meetups, the shared laughter over everyday moments. While many friends have reached out to me, and I’ve reciprocated, enabling us to keep in touch through calls and messages, there’s no denying it’s different. My bestie, Ashley, has been absolutely incredible about calling and FaceTiming me regularly, and I so deeply appreciate her intentionality and consistent effort to bridge the miles. Sometimes, the physical distance feels heart-wrenching, a deep ache for those familiar, immediate connections that nurture the soul. Have you ever felt that profound sense of longing for a friend who lives far away, a yearning for their physical presence? It’s a powerful reminder that truly good friends are irreplaceable, and their presence, even virtually, means the world and sustains us through new beginnings.
The “New in Town” Advantage and Looking Ahead
I’m also discovering that the phrase, “I’m new in town,” is perhaps the most incredible social advantage ever! It provides such a wonderful, easy excuse to meet almost anyone, or to randomly stop someone and ask them a question about the area – whether it’s for directions, a recommendation, or just a friendly chat. Going to a new restaurant or store for the first time? The same rule applies – you can confidently ask for recommendations for the best dish or the most popular product simply because you’re new! It’s a fantastic icebreaker and a genuine, non-intimidating way to learn about your surroundings and interact with locals. However, it does lead to an interesting philosophical question: At what point am I no longer “new in town”? Is it six months? A year? I suppose it’s a feeling as much as a timeframe, a gradual absorption into the local culture, but for now, I’m certainly enjoying its many benefits and the open doors it provides for connection.
As we wrap up this comprehensive June update, I’m truly excited to see what the next month brings, particularly in terms of solidifying friendships, finding our definitive place within this vibrant Michigan community, and continuing to explore all that our new home has to offer. Plus, I’m turning 28 very soon, which feels like another significant milestone in this exciting new chapter of our lives! There’s a palpable sense of anticipation for what’s to come, and we’re ready to embrace it all, with open hearts and a spirit of adventure. Our journey of making Michigan home is just beginning, and we’re eager for every step.
