March Milestones: Celebrating a PhD, DIY Transformations, and New Beginnings
A Look Back at Our Adventures Out of the Kitchen This Month
March truly kicked off with a delightful and creatively inspiring evening as our bible study group gathered for a super fun cake decorating night. It was an absolute joy to host and guide the girls through the steps of frosting and decorating their own cakes. Seeing their faces light up with pride as they mastered piping techniques and brought their delicious visions to life was incredibly rewarding. The kitchen buzzed with laughter, focused concentration, and the sweet aroma of vanilla and sugar. Each cake became a canvas for individual expression, showcasing a vibrant array of colors, sprinkles, and unique designs. This evening wasn’t just about perfecting a dessert; it was a wonderful opportunity for fellowship, creativity, and building lasting memories together.
Here’s a closer look at their amazing, fun cakes! The creativity on display was truly impressive, ranging from elegant floral patterns to playful, abstract designs. Each one reflected the personality of its creator, proving that with a little guidance and a lot of enthusiasm, anyone can become a cake artist.
Beyond the kitchen, our home improvement spirit was in full swing as we finally completed an IKEA table hack project that had been ongoing for a while. What once was a simple, all-black table has been completely transformed into a piece with undeniable character and warmth. My vision for this project was to elevate its aesthetic by adding rustic charm. I meticulously antiqued and stained individual wood boards, carefully selecting shades that would complement our home’s decor. These treated boards were then precisely cut and securely glued to the tabletop, creating a beautiful, textured surface. To give it a truly finished and polished look, I added a decorative casing around the edges, seamlessly blending the new top with the original base. This DIY project was a labor of love, and the result is a testament to how much personality you can infuse into everyday furniture with a bit of creativity and effort. It now serves as a central, inviting piece in our living space.
The second half of this month was dominated by a monumental event for Ryan: his PhD defense. The preparation leading up to it was intense, filled with countless hours of research, writing, and practicing his presentation. One memorable practice session involved him delivering his defense talk to me, all while our beloved dog, Salsa, remained utterly oblivious, peacefully asleep on his lap. It was a moment of quiet, focused intensity, with an adorable, furry touch of normalcy amidst the academic rigor. These moments, both big and small, truly painted a picture of our life in March.
The day of Ryan’s defense arrived, and he truly shone. Standing confidently before his committee, he looked incredibly professional, undeniably cute, and sounded profoundly intelligent as he articulated years of hard work and groundbreaking research. Despite my best efforts to fully grasp the intricacies of polymer chemistry, I must admit, a 60-minute talk on the subject was quite literally over my head. Ryan later confessed that he caught my “totally glazed over” look a few times during his presentation, though always accompanied by a supportive smile. While the technical details might have eluded me, my excitement and immense pride for him were unwavering throughout! Witnessing him defend his dissertation with such clarity and passion was an awe-inspiring experience, a culmination of his dedication and perseverance.
After the intense intellectual marathon, it was time to celebrate! The second photo above captures some of the fun, quirky chemistry-themed items I carefully selected for his post-defense party. From beaker glasses to molecular structure decorations, every detail was designed to perfectly honor his incredible academic achievement and the scientific field he now officially masters. It was a joy to curate these elements, knowing they would add an extra layer of personalized fun to the celebration of “Dr. Ryan.”
The celebration extended beyond just our immediate family, as both Ryan’s family and my family traveled to be with us for this momentous occasion. Having everyone together under one roof, sharing stories, laughter, and meals, was incredibly special. Their collective support and presence truly amplified the joy of Ryan’s achievement. It was a rare and cherished opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones who have been instrumental in our journey, making the successful defense even more meaningful. The house was filled with warmth, camaraderie, and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment shared by all. These are the moments that strengthen family bonds and create treasured memories that last a lifetime.
Just when we thought the celebrations were winding down, our incredible friends had another surprise up their sleeves! They meticulously planned another chemistry-themed party for Ryan, perfectly aligning with his academic triumph. However, in true sneaky fashion, they ingeniously combined it with a celebratory moving party for both of us – a complete and delightful surprise for me! Walking into a room adorned with adorable house banners and personalized decorations made us feel incredibly special and celebrated. It was more than just a party; it was a profound testament to the deep friendships we’ve cultivated here, a beautiful send-off as we prepare for our next chapter. The thoughtfulness and effort our friends put into making us feel so loved and cherished truly touched our hearts, reminding us how fortunate we are to have such an amazing support system. The evening was a perfect blend of intellectual triumph, future excitement, and heartfelt goodbyes.
Standing next to Dr. Ryan himself – eek! It still feels surreal to call him that! Our adventures continued with a relaxed Starbucks date, a cherished ritual for us. This particular outing was made extra fun with a few classic games. We brought along Farkle, a thrilling dice game that always leads to competitive laughter and surprising turns of luck. We also indulged in a creative drawing game, where one person starts with a few random scribbles, and the other has to imaginatively transform them into a recognizable picture. It’s always a fantastic way to spark creativity, share some laughs, and simply enjoy each other’s company without any agenda. These simple moments of connection are vital, especially amidst the whirlwind of major life changes. They remind us to slow down, appreciate the present, and find joy in the everyday.
As we prepare for our move, I’ve been seizing every opportunity to get my fill of Chipotle. Our new city, to my utter dismay, doesn’t have one (I know, it’s practically a travesty!). If only I could have their delicious guacamole on tap at my house; it’s a dream! These last few Chipotle runs have been a bittersweet indulgence, a small farewell to a beloved comfort. Life with a playful pup like Salsa is never dull, and this month was no exception. One afternoon, while we were out, Salsa, in what we can only assume was a moment of exuberant play or perhaps a clumsy tail wag, managed to knock over our beautiful glass vase, filled with fresh flowers. We returned home to a messy scene of broken glass, spilled water, and scattered petals. Interestingly, the moment we walked through the door, Salsa wasn’t there to greet us with his usual enthusiastic tail wags. He’s always at the door, but that day, he was notably absent. It was almost as if he knew he was in trouble, retreating to a corner with a look of pure canine guilt. It’s hard to stay mad at such a sweet face, even when faced with shattered glass and a wet floor!
And finally, a little peek behind the scenes from some recent photo shoots. It’s always amusing to capture the stark contrast between the perfectly styled, clean, and organized shooting surface and the chaotic reality surrounding it. Props, lights, cables, and various paraphernalia are usually strewn everywhere, creating a delightful mess that perfectly illustrates the effort and artistry involved in creating that one perfect shot. This juxtaposition is a humorous reminder that often, the polished final product belies a much more intricate and less glamorous process behind the curtains. It’s a reality that resonates with many aspects of life, where the beautiful end result often requires a bit of organized chaos to achieve.
Navigating New Chapters: Reflections on March and the Journey Ahead
March, without a doubt, was one of the busiest and most transformative months we’ve experienced in a long time. It felt like a whirlwind of endings and beginnings, packed with significant milestones that have set the stage for our future.
Last month, we excitedly shared the news that we had bought a house! While the ink is dry on the contract, it still doesn’t quite feel real until we officially close in May. This means we’re now just six short weeks away from an out-of-state move, and every emotion imaginable is bubbling to the surface. The excitement of a new home and a fresh start is palpable, but it’s intertwined with the complex feelings of leaving behind a place we’ve grown to cherish deeply.
The crowning achievement of this month was undoubtedly Ryan’s successful PhD defense, officially making him a Doctor of Philosophy! No amount of exclamation points could truly convey the sheer excitement and overwhelming pride we feel for him. It has been an incredible journey, and celebrating his years of dedication, sacrifice, and intellectual prowess was an absolute honor. We hosted several wonderful chemistry-themed parties, surrounded by both our families and cherished friends, all eager to honor his monumental accomplishment. Yet, despite all the celebrations, it still feels somewhat surreal that this chapter, which has defined so much of our lives for so long, is almost completely wrapped up.
He’s currently in the final stages of wrapping up his remaining academic commitments. I anticipate that the full weight and reality of his achievement will truly sink in once he officially graduates. Our moving day is scheduled just three days after his graduation, which means I’m bracing myself for what I can only describe as semi-chaos. But how does one truly prepare for such an intense transition, balancing graduation festivities with the arduous task of packing up an entire life? It’s a challenge we’re ready to face head-on, albeit with a healthy dose of trepidation and a strategic plan for survival.
We’re hitting all these significant life milestones – the PhD, buying a house, and an interstate move – that we’ve talked about, dreamed about, and planned for over a considerable period. Consequently, I’ve found myself, and still do, riding an emotional roller coaster. Some days, I am absolutely buzzing with excitement about the move, envisioning new possibilities and adventures. Other days, I’m so deeply engrossed in the present demands of packing, planning, and everyday life that I barely have a moment to think about the upcoming transition. And then there are those poignant days where tears well up, as the thought of leaving this place, this home we’ve so carefully built and nurtured, feels genuinely heartbreaking.
There’s a profound irony in all of this. When we first moved to Illinois for Ryan’s PhD, I was incredibly reluctant to come, harboring a deep desire to stay within the familiar comforts of Minnesota. I genuinely doubted my ability to forge new friendships that could ever rival the deep connections I had back home. But as I reflect now, God has been incredibly faithful, surpassing all my expectations.
My heart feels so deeply attached to a place I initially didn’t want to move to at all. It’s here that I’ve developed some of the most profound, authentic, and tender friendships of my life. It’s in this city that Ryan and I started our marriage, navigating its early complexities and joys. It’s within these walls that I wrestled with paralyzing anxiety, ultimately learning invaluable lessons about myself, my resilience, and my faith. I embarked on my blogging journey from this very spot, pouring my heart and experiences into words. And, perhaps most adorably, it’s here that we welcomed our furry companion, Salsa, into our lives. How do you possibly say goodbye to a place, and more importantly, to the people who have become so instrumental and influential in shaping who you are?
While I wrestle with the emotional weight of processing these goodbyes, I am constantly reminded of God’s unwavering faithfulness. He was faithful when we first moved here, guiding us through uncertainties and blessing us beyond measure, and I hold steadfast to the belief that He will be equally faithful as we transition to our next city. This conviction brings a deep sense of peace amidst the swirling emotions of change.
With a renewed sense of purpose, God has laid it on my heart to intentionally pray for our future neighbors, for the community of our new church, for the friends we are yet to meet, for Ryan’s future co-workers, and especially for the family from whom we are purchasing our new house. We envision a smooth transition for them as well, praying for grace and blessing over their next steps.
So, we have officially entered that somewhat awkward, yet exhilarating, moving phase. It’s a time when you realize future commitments are challenging to make, as our departure date looms large. Simultaneously, we’re immersed in the delicate dance of planning heartfelt goodbyes to those who have enriched our lives here. We’re meticulously figuring out every item we need to acquire for our new home, while simultaneously undertaking the monumental task of packing up our current one. It’s a period of learning how to finish well where we are, honoring the memories and growth fostered here, and preparing our hearts and minds to embrace where God has unequivocally called us next. It’s a chapter filled with gratitude, anticipation, and an abiding trust in His divine plan.
