May 2015: Beyond the Pantry

Out of the Kitchen: Our Memorable May Adventures

Welcome back to another edition of our “Out of the Kitchen” series, where we pull back the curtain and share a more personal look at what’s been happening behind the scenes. May was a vibrant month, filled with a delightful blend of creative projects, heartwarming family moments, and a few amusing kitchen escapades. It’s always a joy to connect with you beyond the recipes and styled food photos, offering a peek into the real-life inspirations and challenges that fuel our passion for blogging. So, grab a cup of coffee and settle in, because we have a lot of exciting updates to share from a truly eventful month!

Crafting the Perfect Canvas: New Backdrops and Creative Kids’ Meals

The beginning of May kicked off with a burst of creative energy, as I embarked on a significant project to enhance my food photography setup. Every food blogger and content creator understands the critical importance of a compelling visual, and for me, that often starts with the perfect backdrop. A backdrop isn’t just a surface; it’s the foundation that sets the mood, enhances the textures, and makes the food truly pop. With this in mind, I made a special trip to Home Depot and came away with a massive piece of faux brick paneling – a material I knew would offer incredible texture and versatility to my photos.

The challenge then began: transforming this large, unwieldy sheet into usable, manageable pieces. I had it expertly cut down into six individual backdrops, each ready for its own unique artistic transformation. Since then, I’ve been diligently working my way through painting each one in various colors and finishes. Experimenting with different shades, from distressed whites to rustic grays and deep, moody tones, and applying various painting techniques has been incredibly rewarding. I can already see how these new DIY backdrops will dramatically elevate the aesthetics and professional quality of future recipes and posts. They are truly starting to look fantastic, providing a diverse palette for capturing everything from rustic comfort food to elegant, delicate desserts. This hands-on endeavor not only allowed for significant cost savings but also ensured a custom, personalized touch that truly reflects my unique style and the desired mood of my culinary creations.

In a delightful contrast to the focused work on backdrops, one day brought a wave of culinary fun for my nanny kids. I decided to make lunchtime an imaginative adventure, crafting a truly “fishy” meal that brought immediate smiles and squeals of delight to their faces. It was the perfect opportunity to put my extensive collection of cookie cutters to good use, transforming ordinary ingredients into an underwater feast! We had fish-shaped sandwiches, perhaps some star-shaped cheese, and other ocean-themed delights that made lunchtime an exciting game rather than just a meal. Seeing their genuine joy and excitement as they discovered each fun shape reminded me that cooking, whether for a blog photoshoot or a simple kids’ meal, is ultimately about creating happiness, fostering imagination, and building memorable experiences. These moments underscore the delicate balance between my professional creative pursuits and the heartwarming responsibilities of everyday life.

Navigating a Gluten-Free Lifestyle: Aldi Finds and Cheesecake Indulgence

While I often focus on accessible recipes for everyone, it’s something I don’t frequently highlight on the blog, but it’s a significant part of my daily life: I live with a gluten allergy. This means navigating grocery aisles with a keen eye, meticulously checking labels, and always being on the lookout for delicious and safe alternatives that don’t compromise on flavor or quality. The journey of living gluten-free has certainly evolved over the years, and thankfully, the market for gluten-free products has expanded exponentially.

So, when Aldi, a true hero for those of us with dietary restrictions, announced a special buy featuring a plethora of new gluten-free products, I knew it was time for a serious stock-up mission. Aldi consistently offers high-quality, budget-friendly gluten-free options that are often hard to find elsewhere, making it a go-to for my weekly shop. My cart quickly filled with an exciting array of treasures: gluten-free muffin mixes that promised quick and easy breakfasts, delectable cookies perfect for afternoon snacks, versatile crackers ideal for cheese boards or savory dips, and even frozen waffles for those busy mornings. It felt like hitting the jackpot, discovering so many new and exciting options all in one place!

I’m still happily working my way through most of these amazing finds, gradually incorporating them into my daily meals and snacks, experimenting with them in various recipes, and savoring the convenience they offer. However, there’s one item that didn’t last long enough to be savored slowly or shared: that irresistible frozen cheesecake you might spot in the second photo. Yes, you read that right. All of it. Just me. It was an absolute moment of pure, unadulterated bliss, a delightful treat that was simply too good to share. In the grand scheme of a carefully managed gluten-free diet, sometimes a little self-indulgence, a moment of pure culinary delight like that cheesecake, is exactly what’s needed to recharge and remind oneself of life’s delicious pleasures. It was a guilty pleasure, perhaps, but one I enjoyed immensely, without a single regret!

Cozy Date Nights and Ice Cream Dreams: From Couch to McDonald’s

Our life isn’t always about elaborate meals, complex recipes, and intricate kitchen experiments; sometimes, it’s about embracing simple pleasures and cherishing intimate moments. This past month, a quintessential Friday night at our house looked exactly like this: a perfectly cozy date night IN. We transformed our living room into the ultimate comfort zone, complete with plush blankets, dimmed lights, and our all-time favorite animated classic, “The Incredibles.” There’s something incredibly comforting and uniquely intimate about staying home, escaping the hustle and bustle of the outside world, and simply enjoying each other’s company with a great movie and perhaps some homemade popcorn. These quiet, relaxed evenings are truly invaluable for recharging, reconnecting, and fostering the kind of deep bond that makes everyday life so much sweeter.

But when the craving for something sweet strikes, our resolve for healthy alternatives sometimes wavers in the most delightful ways! You can see evidence of this in the second photo: an impromptu ice cream date at McDonald’s. It’s no secret that we seriously love ice cream; it’s a shared weakness, a simple joy, and an easy treat that brings instant happiness. While we are genuinely trying to make healthier choices – often opting for our homemade “banana ice cream” (our guilt-free, creamy concoction of smashed-up frozen bananas for a wholesome sweet fix) – the irresistible allure of a classic McDonald’s or Dairy Queen sundae is incredibly hard to resist. My personal go-to flavor, without fail, is anything with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. That perfect, salty-sweet combination of chocolate and peanut butter is pure bliss and a delicious reminder that sometimes, a little indulgence is perfectly fine and wonderfully necessary for the soul!

Culinary Quirks and Kitchen Catastrophes: Ryan’s Dinner & a Piping Tip Tragedy

Life in our kitchen isn’t always about picture-perfect gourmet dishes and meticulously planned meals; sometimes, it’s about hilarious mishaps and unique, often unconventional, culinary creations. Take, for instance, the first photo: a classic example of what happens when my husband, Ryan, takes over dinner duties for himself. His culinary masterpiece? Two hot dogs, unceremoniously wrapped in a tortilla. Yes, you read that correctly – no bun, just a tortilla. It’s a testament to his impressive knack for quick, no-fuss meals that prioritize efficiency over traditional gastronomy! This particular creation always makes me laugh, highlighting the amusing differences in our approaches to food preparation and showcasing his endearing pragmatism. It’s these lighthearted, unexpected moments that truly make our home life so enjoyable and full of distinct character.

Then there are the truly unforgettable kitchen incidents, the ones that make you gasp and then burst into laughter – like the one captured in the second photo. If you look closely, you’ll notice that one of these piping tips is definitely not like the others. This is the unfortunate, mangled result of a cherished piping tip making an unscheduled, catastrophic trip through the garbage disposal. The distinct clatter and grind were unmistakable, followed by the sinking realization of what had just happened. After frantically turning off the disposal and gingerly retrieving the metallic casualty, the sight was both comical and slightly heartbreaking. Even now, after inspecting the damaged remnants, I still can’t quite identify which specific tip it was that met its untimely demise. It’s a stark, humorous reminder of the chaotic beauty of a busy kitchen and the occasional (often expensive!) accidents that come with the territory. A moment of silence, please, for our fallen pastry tool, and a cautionary tale for all home bakers!

The Reality of Food Blogging: Post-Shoot Chaos and Home Office Dreams

What you typically see on the blog are polished, beautiful images of delicious food, perfectly styled and thoughtfully composed. What you don’t always see, however, is the organized chaos (or sometimes just pure chaos!) that often follows a productive photo shoot. The photo here provides a small glimpse, but honestly, it doesn’t even begin to do justice to the true aftermath. Our kitchen, which serves as my primary studio and creative hub, frequently transforms into a delightful disaster zone. There are usually crumbs and sprinkles scattered across every surface, a fine dusting of flour that seemingly appears out of nowhere, and various props strewn across the kitchen table – from vintage plates and antique serving ware to colorful napkins and carefully selected textures, all waiting patiently to be cleaned and put away.

The tripod might be lurking haphazardly behind a chair, backgrounds leaning against walls in various states of disarray, and all manner of cooking utensils, mixing bowls, and specialty gadgets occupying every inch of counter space. It’s a creative whirlwind, undeniably energizing in the moment, but also a persistent reminder of a growing need: an dedicated, organized office space. The dream of having a designated area for all my blogging essentials – props, lighting equipment, camera gear, editing station, and endless recipe notes – is becoming increasingly vivid and urgent. Just recently, my wonderful friend Becky, The Cookie Rookie, posted the most gorgeous photo of her newly organized office on Instagram, and it was a powerful burst of inspiration. Her beautifully curated and functional space only solidified my desire for a similar haven, a place where creativity can flourish without simultaneously engulfing the entire kitchen. It truly looks amazing, and I’m constantly dreaming up plans for my own dedicated blogging sanctuary, where I can work efficiently and keep the post-shoot mess contained!

Minnesota Memories: Family, Frosting, and Farm Life

The highlight of May, without a doubt, was the unforgettable week we spent with our beloved families in beautiful Minnesota. It was a much-anticipated trip, packed to the brim with laughter, bonding, and countless cherished moments that will last a lifetime. We managed to fit in so many wonderful activities, from exploring local sights to simply enjoying each other’s company. One of the most fulfilling experiences was getting the opportunity to share my passion for baking with my loved ones. I organized an impromptu cake decorating workshop, a hands-on session where I taught everyone how to properly assemble a layered cake, ensuring stability and a perfect canvas, and then, even more excitingly, how to frost it with delicate, beautiful rosettes.

My nieces and nephews proved to be an incredibly enthusiastic and fun crowd to teach. Their eagerness to learn, their sticky fingers covered in frosting, and their infectious giggles made the entire experience truly special and heartwarming. It wasn’t just the younger generation who joined in the sweet fun; my mom and sister also embraced the creative challenge with gusto, eagerly learning the intricate art of piping beautiful buttercream roses. The kitchen was a lively hub of activity, filled with flour, frosting, and an abundance of happiness, making it a perfect blend of family bonding and shared creative endeavor. It was a wonderful way to spend quality time together, creating something beautiful and delicious from scratch, and sharing skills that brought everyone so much joy and a sense of accomplishment.

Adventures in Minnesota: Chickens, Antiques, and the Quest for Storage

Our Minnesota adventures continued with some rather unique and memorable experiences. No trip to my mom’s house is truly complete without an obligatory picture with her charming flock of chickens! These feathery friends are always a source of amusement and curiosity, and this time, Ryan and I even mustered up the courage to feed them grapes directly from our hands. It was surprisingly exhilarating, a small but memorable interaction with farm life that added a unique, rustic touch to our visit and left us with plenty of laughs.

The second photo reveals another exciting discovery: Antiques Minnesota! This was my very first time exploring this particular treasure trove, and it was an absolute delight for any creative soul. I spent hours happily sifting through vintage finds, discovering tons of incredible props that are absolutely perfect for my blog. From rustic serving platters and intricately patterned glassware to unique kitchen gadgets and aged wooden boards, each item sparked new ideas for future food photography sessions. I was in prop heaven, envisioning all the beautiful ways these pieces could enhance my culinary stories! However, the joy of these acquisitions was slightly tempered upon our return home when I faced the inevitable truth: I have officially run out of places to store all my wonderful new treasures. It’s a delightful problem to have for a creative person, but a problem nonetheless! The hashtag #NeedMoreStorage perfectly encapsulates my current dilemma as I continue to dream of expanding my creative space and finding clever, stylish solutions for my ever-growing collection of blogging essentials.

Capturing Moments: Family Portraits and Photography Horizons

Beyond the baking lessons and antique hunts, a significant portion of our time in Minnesota was dedicated to simply playing and creating cherished memories with our beloved nieces and nephews. Their energy is infectious, their laughter fills every room, and spending time with them is always an absolute highlight of any family gathering. My dad, ever the astute observer and quick with a camera, managed to capture a truly heartwarming, candid shot of all of us playing together. That top picture is a beautiful, spontaneous reminder of those joyful, unscripted moments of connection and pure fun that make family gatherings so incredibly special and irreplaceable.

The bottom photo from our trip represents a new and exciting challenge I eagerly embraced: family portrait photography. As a food blogger, I’m accustomed to photographing static subjects that patiently await their close-up, allowing for precise styling and lighting. Photographing humans, especially lively children with their boundless energy and unpredictable movements, is an entirely different beast! It requires a distinct set of skills: capturing genuine expressions, managing dynamic compositions, understanding natural light in a way that differs greatly from my usual studio setups, and immense patience. I had the wonderful opportunity to take family photos for my sister and brother-in-law and their kids, and while it was definitely a steep learning curve and pushed me out of my comfort zone, it was incredibly fun and immensely rewarding. It’s a skill I am genuinely eager to develop further, adding a new dimension to my creative repertoire and allowing me to capture more than just delicious food – but also the beautiful, fleeting, and deeply emotional moments of human connection and family love.
