As any dedicated food blogger will attest, our cupboards are perpetually overflowing with an impressive and colorful collection of sprinkles. We certainly put them to good use, transforming simple, spiced pumpkin cookies into miniature edible masterpieces. While it undeniably took a bit of practice to perfect the swirling patterns and achieve the desired aesthetic, the process itself was incredibly fun. It offered a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time together, collaborating on a creative project and producing something unique for our home decor. It’s amusing how, as adults, these kinds of community events can genuinely spark so much enthusiasm! We were particularly enchanted by their unique “pour your own honey” station, allowing customers to fill their jars with local honey, and a fantastic “make your own nut butter” station, providing freshly ground options. These thoughtful features elevate the shopping experience from a mundane chore to an engaging adventure, inspiring us to experiment with more local ingredients and actively support nearby businesses. Discovering such a community-focused market has been a game-changer for our weekly meal planning, fostering a deeper connection to our food sources. It’s always a delightful challenge (and often quite amusing) to navigate Salsa’s playful interventions and keep him out of the shot, but his presence certainly adds a unique, heartwarming charm to our behind-the-scenes content, reminding me of the simple pleasures of working from home with a pet.

Beyond the kitchen and the camera, Ryan and I also prioritize staying active. Tennis is one of our favorite ways to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors together, even though my skills are, shall we say, still very much a work in progress! Ryan, on the other hand, is quite adept at racquet sports, often outlasting me on the court by a considerable margin. One of the month’s most delightful and unexpected surprises involved a spontaneous movie outing. We decided to catch a film, under the impression we were headed to a standard, traditional theater. To our absolute astonishment and utter delight, we discovered a section of our local cinema equipped with incredibly comfortable, spacious reclining chairs! I honestly couldn’t believe what I’d been missing all these years; it was a revelation in movie-going comfort. This unexpected upgrade transformed a simple movie night into a truly luxurious and memorable treat. These small, wonderful discoveries add so much sparkle and joy to everyday life, continually reminding us to always be open to new experiences and appreciate the little luxuries that come our way.

However, not all our October adventures went quite as planned, particularly our quintessential fall visit to the pumpkin patch. This festive outing, which typically ends with beautiful seasonal decor, concluded with a bit of a comedic tragedy. We carefully selected and purchased several beautiful pumpkins, only for our persistent squirrel neighbors to declare war on them. Spending a good $18 on decorative pumpkins, just to have them utterly destroyed by persistent critters, was certainly a lesson in embracing nature’s unpredictability and the often-humorous side of outdoor living. Despite the slight frustration of losing our seasonal decorations, it added a memorable (and amusing) anecdote to our autumn tales, serving as a reminder that nature always finds a way, even if it’s at the expense of our carefully chosen gourds.

Salsa’s Box Obsession & The Unfolding Pumpkin Peril

And just like clockwork, Salsa’s enduring fascination with boxes makes another appearance! Our little feline friend possesses an undeniable affinity for finding solace, security, and endless entertainment within cardboard confines. Whether it’s a freshly delivered package or an old Amazon box, if it’s a box, Salsa will inevitably be found nestled within it, observing his surroundings with his characteristic intensity and a sly demeanor. It’s a beloved running joke in our household, and his remarkable ability to squeeze into (and often comically outgrow) these temporary abodes never ceases to amuse and charm us. His box antics are a testament to his unique personality and add constant joy to our home environment.

Speaking of keen observers, Salsa also played an unwitting, yet significant, role in documenting the ongoing pumpkin destruction. It’s truly hard to believe we’ve had him for a whole year already; time certainly flies when you’re sharing your life with a mischievous and loving cat! During the examination, his usual playful demeanor briefly gave way to a hilarious attempt at camouflage – he tried to disappear by hiding behind a single, small piece of paper on the counter as the vet entered the room. Despite his comical efforts to evade scrutiny, he handled the visit remarkably well, though he did receive some important news: a diet is in order! Prioritizing our pet’s health and well-being is a crucial aspect of responsible ownership, and we are fully committed to helping Salsa achieve his ideal weight for a long, happy, and active life. His health is paramount, and we’re ready for the challenge.

Later in the month, our community connections flourished beautifully with a heartwarming spaghetti dinner shared alongside my bible study group. There’s something truly magical about sharing a delicious meal, engaging in heartfelt laughter, and delving into meaningful conversation with friends. We collectively decided that monthly spaghetti dinners are an absolute necessity, perfectly blending “a little Jesus and a little pasta” for an ideal evening of fellowship, spiritual nourishment, and genuine connection. Our final weekend of October proved to be quite eventful, though certainly not in the way we typically anticipate! We woke up to a minor catastrophe: our kitchen had flooded! Standing water and dirt were unfortunately everywhere, transforming our usually tidy culinary space into an unexpected, extensive cleaning project. It was quite a process to get everything tidied up, from soaking up water to scrubbing away the debris, and then came the inevitable waiting game for maintenance to arrive and expertly unclog our drains. This incident served as a stark, yet timely, reminder of one of the significant advantages of renting – the sheer convenience of simply being able to call maintenance for such issues. This particular benefit is something we know will change considerably as we look ahead to buying a house in Michigan when we move, prompting us to consider the new responsibilities and practical home maintenance skills we’ll need to acquire as future homeowners. It was a challenging but informative experience.

Despite the plumbing drama and the unexpected cleanup, our culinary curiosity and spirit of experimentation remained utterly undeterred. Ryan embarked on a new project: making homemade meatballs from scratch. This was a significant new venture for him, and the result? They were incredibly delicious – truly a testament to his cooking skills! However, this culinary experiment also led to a rather significant and somewhat surprising discovery about our collective preferences: we realized that as much as we enjoyed Ryan’s delicious creation, we aren’t fundamentally “meatball people.” Sometimes, the journey of cooking is as much about discovering what you *don’t* absolutely love as it is about finding new favorites. It was a fun, tasty, and ultimately insightful learning experience nonetheless, highlighting the continuous evolution of our palates and culinary journey.

October was an exceptionally fulfilling month for my budding and passionately pursued hobby: fall photography sessions! I’ve genuinely fallen head over heels in love with human portrait photography, and the stunning, vibrant autumn backdrop provided the perfect natural canvas for capturing truly beautiful and expressive images. I feel incredibly fortunate to have such supportive and wonderful friends in my bible study group, who have been the most patient and encouraging models, sweet enough to graciously let me practice and refine my burgeoning photography skills on them. There’s an immense and unique joy in witnessing their faces light up with genuine happiness and confidence when they view their photos, truly feeling comfortable and radiant in front of the camera. This month, while exceptionally great in many aspects, has simultaneously been layered with complex and often conflicting emotions as our upcoming move to Michigan truly begins to set in and become a tangible reality. On one hand, the exciting, forward-looking aspects are incredibly present and exhilarating: the thrill of house hunting in a brand new city, envisioning how we’ll explore and seamlessly integrate into a new community, and the sheer delight of getting to “nest”—the process of painting, decorating, and ultimately transforming a new house into our very own, deeply personal home. The prospect of a fresh start, designing our ideal living space, and embarking on a new chapter is genuinely exhilarating and fills us with hopeful anticipation for the future.

However, beneath this undeniable excitement lies a profound and sometimes overwhelming sense of sadness and apprehension. I am simply not ready to leave our sweet friends, the incredible, supportive community we’ve meticulously built and cherished here. The daunting thought of starting completely over in a new city, facing that initial, often isolating period of feeling lonely until those solid, deep, and lasting friendships are organically formed, weighs heavily on my heart. I am inherently a “tribe person”; I thrive on connection, I need people to do life with, to share experiences, to lean on during challenges, and to grow alongside. The idea of rebuilding that vital support system from scratch, navigating unfamiliar social landscapes, feels incredibly daunting and emotionally taxing. It’s a significant emotional hurdle to overcome.

Both Ryan and I feel like we are currently suspended in a bit of a waiting period, existing between two significant phases of our lives. We still have half a dozen months here, a phrase that feels incredibly surreal and strange to utter, as this place has undeniably become our home, our anchor. My heart is genuinely conflicted, a swirling mix of eager anticipation for the unknown future and a deep, emotional attachment to our cherished present life. I understand that these feelings are perfectly normal when facing such a significant, life-altering change, but knowing the move is firmly on the horizon, I secretly find myself wishing time would speed up, just to get past this transitional, liminal phase. Yet, amidst this impatience, I also hold fast to the profound and comforting truth that being patient during times of waiting is a powerful form of worship. It’s an act of praising God and trusting Him implicitly in where He has placed us now, believing wholeheartedly that His timing is perfect and His overarching plan will unfold beautifully. This period of waiting is not merely an empty pause; it’s a sacred opportunity to strengthen our faith, cultivate resilience, and wholeheartedly embrace the journey, however uncertain or emotionally challenging it may feel at times. We are trusting in a greater purpose, even when the path ahead isn’t entirely clear.
