Beyond our sweet concoctions, August also marked an exciting milestone: our renewed partnership with the incredible team at KitchenAid! We are absolutely thrilled to collaborate once more with a brand renowned for its innovation and quality. Their latest offering, the Nespresso machine, has quickly become a game-changer in our home. Even for someone who wasn’t previously an avid espresso drinker, Ryan has found himself completely captivated by its simplicity and the rich, aromatic coffee it produces. It’s safe to say, his morning routine now revolves around that perfect shot of espresso! We’re already experimenting with various ways to incorporate this fantastic machine into our culinary endeavors and can’t wait to unveil a special recipe featuring the Nespresso in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for a delicious treat that will undoubtedly elevate your coffee experience.

Mischievous cat Salsa climbing kitchen cupboards, an overturned panini press and twig basket, and Salsa 'caught red-handed' after the mess.

Our mischievous furball, Salsa, decided to test the limits of gravity—and our patience—this month with an acrobatic display that led to a rather dramatic kitchen mishap. He somehow scaled the kitchen cupboards, transforming himself into a furry, four-legged mountaineer. While his climbing prowess was impressive, the aftermath was less so. In his elevated explorations, Salsa managed to nudge a panini press and a decorative twig basket right off the shelf. The panini press didn’t survive the fall, breaking into pieces, and for a heart-stopping moment, it seemed my photography tripod, complete with an expensive camera, was directly in the line of fire. The sheer proximity of disaster was enough to send a jolt through me!

Thankfully, the camera emerged unscathed, but the sight of the broken panini press and the scattered twigs was a stark reminder of Salsa’s adventurous spirit. Of course, the incident was perfectly capped off by an ‘after’ shot of the culprit himself – Salsa, looking undeniably guilty, caught red-handed in the midst of his wreckage. Despite the minor chaos, his antics always manage to bring a unique brand of humor and lively energy to our home. Life with a cat, especially one as curious and daring as Salsa, is certainly never dull, offering constant entertainment, even if it occasionally comes with a side of unexpected repairs.

Person bouldering at a new free-climbing gym; rare photo of cat Salsa snuggled close with Ryan on the couch.

Embracing new challenges, we discovered a fantastic new bouldering gym that recently opened its doors in our neighborhood. This isn’t your typical roped rock climbing; it’s all about free climbing, tackling challenging routes close to the ground without harnesses or safety ropes – just thick mats below. It proved to be an incredibly exhilarating experience, pushing both our physical and mental limits. While the thrill of problem-solving and reaching new heights was undeniable, I also made a rather humbling personal discovery: I seem to harbor a subtle, yet persistent, fear of heights. Despite the inherent safety of the bouldering environment, there were moments when the elevation, even slight, made my palms a little sweaty and my heart race. It was a wonderful blend of strenuous exercise and a valuable lesson in self-awareness, leaving us feeling accomplished and ready for the next climb.

On a much softer, yet equally significant note, the second snapshot captures one of those truly precious and exceedingly rare moments: Salsa snuggled up comfortably with Ryan. For anyone who knows our feline friend, Salsa is typically a creature of independence, often preferring his own space. So, to witness him voluntarily curling up, purring contentedly, and showing such overt affection towards Ryan is something truly special. These fleeting displays of tenderness are moments we absolutely treasure and make a point to capture whenever possible. They remind us of the unique bonds we share with our pets and the quiet joy they bring into our lives, especially when they defy their usual aloof nature to offer a heartwarming cuddle.

Drill press tool humorously placed in a bedroom, highlighting small house living; enormous, vibrant sunflowers in full bloom.

Sometimes, life in a smaller home calls for creative, if not slightly unconventional, solutions, and this month’s snapshot perfectly encapsulates that reality. The image that still makes us chuckle features none other than a hefty drill press, proudly (and perhaps surprisingly) situated right in the middle of our bedroom. It’s a classic case of #smallhouseproblems, where every available inch of space is utilized, often leading to tools and equipment appearing in the most unexpected corners of the house. This momentary setup wasn’t ideal, but it was necessary for a home project, illustrating the charming quirks and compromises that come with maximizing functionality in a cozy living environment. It’s a testament to our adaptability and a reminder that sometimes, multi-purpose rooms are just part of the adventure.

Shifting gears from the practical to the purely beautiful, the second photograph offers a stunning contrast: a vibrant ode to nature’s grandeur. It showcases an incredible display of sunflowers, towering magnificently with their bright, cheerful faces turned towards the sun. What started as small seeds has blossomed into truly monstrous, awe-inspiring plants, each bloom bursting with rich yellow petals and intricate centers. Their sheer scale and vivacity are a testament to the simple wonders of the natural world and a source of daily joy. They bring a spectacular splash of color and life to our surroundings, serving as a beautiful backdrop to our daily routines and a perfect symbol of late summer abundance and natural beauty.

Eclectic finds at an antique market for blog props and a metal flower bucket; Ryan and author enjoying their first summer tennis match.

August provided the perfect opportunity for one of my absolute favorite pastimes: a visit to the bustling antique market. This place holds a special charm for me, a treasure trove where every corner promises a unique discovery and a story waiting to be told. Spending hours sifting through vintage finds, imagining their past lives, and envisioning their future in our home is a true joy. This particular trip was a fruitful one; I managed to unearth several charming and unique pieces that will serve as fantastic props for upcoming blog photoshoots, adding character and warmth to our culinary narratives. Additionally, I stumbled upon an adorable metal bucket, perfectly rustic and sturdy, which now proudly holds a colorful arrangement of fresh flowers, gracing our front porch with a welcoming touch of seasonal beauty.

Beyond solo antiquing adventures, Ryan and I also enjoyed our very first tennis date of the summer, a long-awaited occasion! While the spirit of friendly competition was definitely in the air, the reality of our skill levels is quite different. Ryan honed his tennis prowess throughout high school, making him a formidable, seasoned player on the court. I, on the other hand, approach the game with enthusiasm but significantly less experience and stamina. It’s a running joke between us that I typically “run out of steam” and am ready for a cool drink long before he even breaks a serious sweat! Despite the disparity in our athletic endurance, these tennis dates are always a blast, offering a wonderful opportunity for us to get active together, enjoy the sunshine, and share some laughs, even if the score isn’t always in my favor.

Aftermath of a small oven fire with smoky vegetables; cat Salsa celebrating his 1st birthday, comically attacking a party hat.

August certainly brought its share of unexpected moments, including a rather alarming, albeit thankfully contained, small oven fire. It was one of those heart-stopping kitchen incidents that quickly escalates from a minor anomaly to full-blown panic. I vividly recall the rush of adrenaline and the feeling of helplessness as I confronted the flames. In that moment of distress, I was incredibly grateful that Ryan was home to calmly take charge and extinguish the fire. While the immediate danger passed, the aftermath lingered – our vegetables, intended for dinner, acquired an unintentional but rather distinct smoky flavor, and more significantly, our entire house retained a persistent, smoky aroma for days. It was a stark reminder of how quickly things can go awry and the immense value of having a cool head during a crisis.

Amidst the smoky aftermath, we also had a truly special occasion to celebrate: Salsa’s very first birthday! Our beloved feline companion officially turned one, and we were eager to mark this milestone with all the appropriate fanfare, including a tiny party hat. However, anyone who has tried to dress a cat knows the challenge. Salsa, true to his independent and spirited nature, was decidedly uncooperative when it came to wearing his festive headwear for a photo. After numerous attempts and much feline resistance, the best shot we managed to capture was a comical, action-packed image of him playfully attacking the party hat, a clear expression of his disdain for formal attire. It wasn’t the posed portrait we envisioned, but it perfectly encapsulated his vibrant personality and added another memorable, laughter-filled chapter to his first year with us.

Ryan's homemade espresso tiramisu cake, celebrating a nannying farewell; a thoughtful embroidered apron gift for a baker from the nanny family.

August marked a significant transition for me as I bid farewell to my nannying role. It was a day brimming with mixed emotions – a bittersweet moment filled with both poignant goodbyes and exciting anticipation for the future. The bond formed with the children and their family over the years made the departure particularly emotional, a testament to the love and connection we shared. To celebrate this new chapter and acknowledge the hard work and dedication I’d poured into nannying, Ryan orchestrated an incredible surprise: he meticulously crafted an espresso tiramisu cake entirely from scratch, all by himself! This thoughtful gesture was not only incredibly sweet but also showcased his burgeoning culinary talents. The cake was nothing short of amazing, a rich, decadent treat that truly sweetened the farewell. His skills are so impressive, I’m actively trying to persuade him to join me on the blog, believing his contributions would be a fantastic addition!

Adding another layer of warmth to my departure, my wonderful nanny family presented me with the most thoughtful and adorable gift: a charming apron, beautifully embroidered with a heartfelt message. This personalized present truly touched my heart, serving as a tangible reminder of the special relationship we cultivated. For a passionate baker like myself, an apron is far more than just a piece of cloth; it’s an essential tool, a symbol of creativity, and a cherished item. This specific apron, with its personalized touch, has immediately become one of my most prized possessions, a constant source of encouragement and a reminder of the kindness and appreciation from a family that truly felt like my own. It was the perfect send-off gift, hinting at many more baking adventures to come.

Organized freezer interior with new basket shelves, secured with duct tape; cat Salsa sleeping on a laptop, asserting himself as a 'momma's cat'.

Even the most functional spaces in our home deserve a little TLC, and this month, our freezer was the lucky recipient of a much-needed organizational makeover. For too long, it had been a chaotic abyss where items were perpetually stacked precariously on top of one another, making it a frustrating exercise to find anything without initiating an avalanche. To combat this everyday struggle, I invested in a set of clever basket shelves designed to maximize vertical space and bring order to the frozen chaos. While these shelves promised a streamlined solution, I must confess a small, practical secret: they required a bit of reinforcement. A strategic application of duct tape became my trusty assistant, ensuring the shelves remained firmly in place and wouldn’t shift under the weight of our frozen goods. The result? A remarkably tidier and more accessible freezer, making meal prep and grocery management significantly easier and less stressful.

And speaking of home life, our beloved Salsa continues to assert his adorable dominance, solidifying his status as a true “momma’s cat.” There’s rarely a moment when I’m focused on a task – whether it’s working on my laptop, reading a book, or even just sorting through papers – that Salsa isn’t somehow involved. He possesses an uncanny ability to find the exact spot I need to be using, and then promptly makes himself comfortable right on top of it. This isn’t just about seeking attention; it’s his unique way of being close, of participating in whatever I’m doing, no matter how inconvenient it might be for me. It’s a constant, furry reminder of his affection and an endearing quirk that brings endless smiles to my face, even when it means typing around a purring, contented feline obstacle.

Beautifully styled rainbow yogurt bowl recipe for a client project; enjoying Italian ice at a sweet corn festival with friend Lindsay.

My passion for food photography took a vibrant turn this month as I worked on an exciting client project, capturing the essence of a fun and colorful rainbow yogurt bowl recipe. There’s something inherently joyful and uplifting about working with such a spectrum of natural colors, layering fresh fruits, and creating a dish that’s as beautiful to behold as it is delicious to eat. Rainbows, in all their forms, truly are the best, symbolizing happiness and wonder, and bringing that energy into food styling is always a creative delight. Each ingredient, from berries to kiwi, was carefully placed to create a visually stunning and enticing presentation, showcasing the natural goodness and artistic potential of healthy eating. This project was a delightful reminder of how much I love blending creativity with culinary arts, delivering visuals that inspire and tempt the taste buds.

Venturing out into the community, we also immersed ourselves in the festive atmosphere of our annual sweet corn festival. This local tradition is a highlight of late summer, bringing together delicious food, lively music, and a strong sense of community spirit. It was during this delightful outing that my friend, Lindsay, introduced me to a culinary revelation: Italian ice. I had, surprisingly, never experienced this delightful frozen treat before, and it was an instant, unforgettable hit! The vibrant flavors, the smooth yet slightly crystalline texture, and the refreshing coolness were absolutely amazing. It was the perfect antidote to a warm August day, a burst of pure, unadulterated pleasure that has now secured a permanent spot on my list of favorite summer indulgences. Discovering new tastes and sharing those moments with friends truly enriches these seasonal celebrations.

Handmade fall twig wreaths adorned with felt flowers, a fun and inexpensive craft project; close-up showing bug bites from collecting twigs.

One of my enduring joys, though often neglected amidst the busyness of life, is engaging in crafty projects. There’s a profound satisfaction that comes from creating something beautiful with your own hands, and this month, I finally carved out time for some creative expression. My dear friend Abbey and I embarked on a delightful DIY adventure, crafting some charming fall twig wreaths. The process began with a leisurely stroll, collecting an array of naturally fallen twigs, which we then artfully arranged and secured into rustic wreath bases. I opted to personalize my wreath with an assortment of vibrant, intricately cut felt flowers, adding a touch of whimsical charm and a burst of color against the earthy tones of the twigs. This project was not only creatively fulfilling but also incredibly budget-friendly; our only expense was a pack of glue sticks, making it an almost entirely free endeavor – a testament to the beauty of natural materials and simple crafting.

However, every silver lining often comes with a small cloud. While the artistic outcome was precisely what I had envisioned, the “collection” phase of our project proved to be a bit more adventurous than anticipated. Spending time in nature, foraging for the perfect twigs, unfortunately meant exposing myself to the local insect population. The result? A rather impressive collection of itchy bug bites, serving as an unexpected souvenir of our crafting excursion. Although the bites were a minor annoyance, they were a small price to pay for the joy of creating something beautiful and the camaraderie shared with Abbey. It was a wonderful reminder that sometimes, the creative process involves a few minor occupational hazards, but the satisfaction of a handmade piece makes it all worthwhile, even with a few lingering itches!

Interior of a historic church with stunning vaulted ceilings and stained glass windows; final endearing photo of cat Salsa bringing joy.

This August brought a refreshing change to our spiritual routine as our church embarked on an exciting new chapter, testing out a beautiful new location. We are now holding services in a truly historic church building, a place steeped in tradition and architectural grandeur. Stepping inside, one is immediately struck by the breathtaking beauty of its design: soaring vaulted ceilings that draw the eye upwards, creating a profound sense of awe and reverence, and exquisite stained glass windows that bathe the interior in a kaleidoscope of colored light. The photograph, as stunning as it is, genuinely doesn’t capture the full majesty and serene atmosphere of this sacred space. It’s a privilege to worship in such a magnificent setting, where every architectural detail speaks of history and devotion, profoundly enhancing our spiritual experience and making each service feel truly special.

And, as is tradition and only fitting, I conclude this monthly recap with a final, endearing image of our beloved feline companion, Salsa. It feels incomplete to share our August adventures without a glimpse of the furry friend who brings so much warmth and laughter into our lives. From his mischievous antics to his rare, tender snuggles, Salsa has truly integrated himself into the fabric of our home. Bringing him into our lives was undoubtedly one of the best decisions we’ve made; his playful spirit, his comforting presence, and his unique personality fill our days with immense joy and endless entertainment. He reminds us daily of the simple pleasures and unconditional love that pets offer, making our home feel complete and our lives infinitely richer.

Opening Up: Reflections on August and Embracing Change

Navigating the Awkward Beauty of August

Ah, August. It’s a month that always feels like a delicate dance between two seasons, possessing a unique charm that’s both lingering and anticipatory. Much like March, it exists in a transitional state, making it delightfully awkward yet undeniably beautiful. The summer heat often persists, creating balmy days perfect for outdoor adventures, yet simultaneously, there’s an undeniable shift in the air. Store shelves begin to hint at autumn, school supplies appear, and suddenly, the cravings for crisp apple desserts and the comforting embrace of pumpkin spice everything begin to surface. This duality extends to our wardrobes, leaving us in a charming quandary: do we hold onto our breezy summer dresses, or do we start delving into the back of the closet, unearthing the cozy boots and scarves that signal cooler days ahead? It’s a month of subtle signals, a gentle nudge towards the changing landscape, and a time for embracing both the warmth of summer’s end and the exciting promise of autumn’s arrival.

A New Perspective on Seasonal Shifts

For as long as I can remember, the approach of late August and the initial weeks of September typically filled me with a sense of dread. I am, at heart, a true summer baby – someone who thrives in the sunshine, despite the comical reality that my skin tends to burn with the swiftness of a piece of toast! The vibrant energy, long days, and boundless possibilities of summer have always been my natural element. Consequently, the inevitable turning of the calendar page from August to September, signaling the end of my favorite season and the onset of significant transitions, used to feel like a heavy burden. I’ve often likened my inherent resistance to change to the immovable steadfastness of a ten-pound boulder – unyielding and deeply rooted. The idea of shifting routines, adjusting to cooler weather, and facing the unknown aspects of a new season often triggered a quiet anxiety, making the end of summer a period of slight melancholy rather than anticipation.

Embracing a Season of Freshness and Focus

However, something profound has shifted within me as this particular fall approaches. Unlike previous years, where a familiar sense of apprehension would begin to settle, this time, there’s an overwhelming feeling of excitement. I find myself not dreading the upcoming changes, but rather eagerly anticipating them. There’s a palpable sense of freshness and vibrant energy in the air, a renewed zest for life that feels invigorating. A significant portion of this newfound enthusiasm stems from the incredible blessing of being able to dedicate myself to blogging full-time. This opportunity is nothing short of a dream come true, and I am profoundly thankful to the Lord for orchestrating His plans in such a beautiful and unexpected way. It’s a testament to divine timing and grace, allowing me to pursue a passion that truly resonates with my spirit.

With this newfound professional focus, I feel an unprecedented clarity and purpose as we step into autumn. For so long, my energy was fragmented, divided among countless priorities and responsibilities, leaving me feeling stretched thin. Now, however, there’s a liberating ability to channel all my creative and intellectual energy into something that genuinely feeds my soul. This focus isn’t just about work; it’s about aligning my efforts with my deepest passions, allowing for a more authentic and impactful expression of myself. This season feels less about juggling multiple tasks and more about diving deep into a singular, fulfilling pursuit, promising a period of significant growth and creative output.

Anticipating a Grand Adventure: Our Cross-Country Move

Adding another layer of exhilarating anticipation to this season of change is the prospect of our impending move. For those closest to us, this isn’t news; this cross-country relocation has been a significant topic on our horizon for approximately four years. It’s a monumental next chapter, and as such, it comes with a complex tapestry of emotions – a swirling mix of anticipation, trepidation, and endless possibilities. While I acknowledge the multitude of feelings this transition evokes, I can genuinely say that, at this very moment, the strongest emotion surging through me is an overwhelming sense of excitement. The idea of a fresh start, new environments, and unexplored adventures is truly captivating.

Currently, we’re deeply immersed in the delightful, if somewhat theoretical, phase of playing the “where do we want to live?” game. This involves countless conversations, extensive research, and vivid daydreaming as we envision our potential new city, the kind of home we might create there, and the new friendships we hope to forge. It’s a joyful and imaginative period, full of mapping out possibilities and painting mental pictures of our future. However, there’s a quiet understanding that this enjoyable exploration phase will eventually give way to the stark reality of uprooting our lives and physically moving across the country. That’s when the practicalities, the logistics, and the deeper emotions of such a significant life change will truly settle in. Once we pinpoint our exact destination and the wheels of motion truly begin to turn, I anticipate that’s when the full weight and profound reality of this grand adventure will truly hit home.

Witnessing Divine Guidance in Ryan’s Career Path

In parallel with our moving discussions, Ryan has a series of crucial onsite interviews on the horizon, marking another significant development in our lives. As these opportunities unfold, we are continuously blown away by the undeniable goodness and perfect timing of the Lord. It’s a powerful testament to a larger plan at work. Interestingly, the very career avenue that Ryan initially had no desire to pursue during his graduate studies, but where he ultimately found himself placed, is now precisely what is leading to these exciting interview prospects. This unexpected turn of events fills us with wonder and gratitude.

Some might label this a mere coincidence, a fortunate alignment of circumstances. However, from our perspective, there’s a deeper, more profound meaning at play. We firmly believe this isn’t just luck; it is unequivocally God’s plan, gracefully unfolding before our eyes. It’s a humbling reminder that even when our own paths seem unclear or diverge from our initial intentions, a higher purpose is often at work, guiding us towards opportunities we couldn’t have foreseen. This faith in divine orchestration provides immense comfort and reassurance as we navigate these significant professional and personal transitions, affirming that we are precisely where we are meant to be, trusting in the unfolding of a beautiful, purposeful journey.

Reflecting on a Year of Battling Anxiety: A Journey of Self-Discovery

On a more personal and deeply reflective note, August also brings me to the precipice of a significant milestone: the one-year anniversary of actively battling anxiety. It’s a journey that, in itself, still has the power to produce a flicker of anxiety, particularly when I cast my mind back to where I was exactly a year ago. The memory of the profound emotional and even physical pain I endured during that period is still vivid, a stark reminder of the challenges overcome. Yet, paradoxically, as I look back, I can’t help but wonder if it’s strange to consider this past year as one of the best years of my life. It might sound contradictory, given the struggles, but the growth and self-discovery have been immense.

Through this challenging yet transformative experience, I have come to know myself in a way I never thought possible. The journey of self-exploration and healing, significantly aided by consistent counseling, has been instrumental in helping me identify and understand the intricate roots of my anxiety. This doesn’t imply that those deep-seated roots have magically vanished; rather, it means I now possess a crucial awareness of their presence and, more importantly, a deeper comprehension of how they manifest and affect me in my daily life. This insight is incredibly empowering, providing me with tools and strategies to navigate moments of worry and fear with greater clarity and resilience. It’s an ongoing process, a continuous commitment to self-care and mental well-being, but one that has undeniably led to profound personal strength and a richer understanding of my inner landscape.

Embracing Change and Trusting the Future

Given my historical aversion to change, largely because of the anxiety it tends to trigger, I find myself in a uniquely encouraging position. This season, despite its many transitions and uncertainties, feels different. I am genuinely embracing it, navigating the shifts with a sense of calm and excitement that is new to me. It’s a powerful testament to the internal work I’ve been doing and the shifts in perspective I’ve gained. I am filled with an eager anticipation to witness what the remainder of this season holds for us, ready to meet its unfolding narratives with an open heart and a resilient spirit.

More than anything, I am committed to embracing God’s overarching plan for our future. This journey has reinforced my faith, showing me that even in the midst of uncertainty, there is a guiding hand at work. There’s a profound comfort in trusting that every step, every change, is part of a larger, divinely crafted tapestry. This faith allows me to approach the unknown not with fear, but with a sense of hopeful surrender, confident that whatever lies ahead is part of a purposeful and loving design. We look forward to seeing where this incredible journey takes us, trusting in blessings to come.
