Welcome back to our “Out of the Kitchen” series! This month, we’re taking you through all the exciting, heartwarming, and sometimes hilarious moments that made March truly special. From crafting adorable stormtrooper marshmallows to discovering life-changing gluten-free options and tackling personal challenges, there’s been no shortage of memorable experiences. Grab a cup of coffee and settle in for our latest update, where we share a closer look at our life beyond the stove!

Star Wars birthday party cupcakes with stormtrooper marshmallows and Salsa the cat hiding in a bag
March kicked off with a delightful bang, celebrating a Star Wars-themed birthday for one of the wonderful kiddos I nanny for. The creativity in children’s party planning never ceases to amaze me, and this year’s theme brought out some truly delightful ideas. I was particularly enamored with the stormtrooper marshmallow concept, brilliantly inspired by The Cookie Rookie. These charming little edible troopers were incredibly simple to assemble but added such an adorable and thematic touch to the cupcakes, much to the delight of the birthday child and all his guests. They truly stood out as a highlight of the dessert table, proving that even small, thoughtful details can make a colossal impact on a celebration. It’s always a pure joy to contribute to making a child’s special day even more magical and memorable, filling it with imaginative fun.

And speaking of special characters, who can spot our beloved resident feline superstar, Salsa, in the second photo? His latest quirky habit has been transforming into a master of disguise, finding the most unexpected and often inconvenient hiding spots around the house. From my gym bag to Ryan’s backpack and even freshly returned grocery bags, if there’s an open receptacle, you can bet Salsa will attempt to burrow inside. It’s a constant source of amusement and a clear reminder that life with a cat is truly never dull. His playful antics and his knack for surprising us always manage to bring a smile to our faces, even when we’re frantically searching for him, only to find him peeking out with mischievous eyes from a canvas tote. He certainly keeps us entertained with his charming eccentricities!

Homemade laundry detergent ingredients being processed and Salsa the cat perched on a bounce board
This month, I finally took the plunge and ventured into the world of homemade laundry detergent, and I can confidently say I am SO glad I did! The decision was primarily driven by a desire for a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to the commercial detergents lining grocery store shelves, which often come with a hefty price tag and a list of unpronounceable chemical ingredients. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward and much less daunting than I had imagined. Having a reliable food processor made chopping up the soap bars an absolute breeze – a definite game-changer for anyone considering this simple yet impactful DIY project. Not only is it infinitely cheaper to produce a large batch that lasts for months, but I’ve also found it does just as good a job, if not better, at getting our clothes sparkling clean and fresh. It’s incredibly satisfying to know exactly what’s going into our laundry, and the subtle, clean scent is a wonderful bonus. This small change has made a significant positive impact on our household budget and our ongoing eco-conscious efforts.

In the second photo, you can see Salsa attempting to fulfill his self-appointed role as “guard cat,” overseeing our domestic chores. His chosen perch on the bounce board, which was temporarily leaning against his cat food bag, suggests a certain level of regal disapproval. I don’t think he was particularly thrilled that his precious food supply was being repurposed, however briefly, as a makeshift prop holder. His discerning gaze and slightly disgruntled expression are classic Salsa, reminding us that even our most practical DIY endeavors are subject to the critiques of our furry overlords. He certainly keeps us on our toes and provides endless entertainment with his vigilant watch.

Tyson gluten-free chicken strips and nuggets with Salsa the cat snuggling on a person's neck
For those of us navigating the world of dietary restrictions, finding delicious and convenient gluten-free options can sometimes feel like a genuine treasure hunt. This month, after what felt like an endless search across multiple grocery stores, I finally struck gold and discovered the gluten-free chicken strips and nuggets from Tyson! I’ve been patiently, or perhaps more accurately, impatiently waiting for a reliable, readily available gluten-free chicken option for what feels like well over a decade, so this discovery was met with immense excitement and relief. And let me tell you, they are absolutely AWESOME! While both the strips and nuggets are fantastic and provide much-needed versatility, I have a slight preference for the strips – they’re perfectly seasoned, have a great texture, and are incredibly satisfying. Way to go, Tyson, for finally delivering on a much-needed product! This isn’t just about convenience; it’s about feeling included and having more delicious, safe choices in our daily lives. It makes meal planning so much easier and more enjoyable when you know there are reliable options out there.

The second photo perfectly captures another one of life’s simple, yet profound, pleasures: the unwavering affection of a furry companion. This cat, our beloved Salsa, just loves to snuggle. His mission, it seems, is to get as close as physically possible to his favorite humans. While his determination to be near is incredibly sweet and endearing, his preferred method of snuggling often involves him trying to lay directly on my neck. As much as I adore his cuddles and appreciate his constant presence, this particular spot isn’t always the most comfortable, especially when I’m trying to relax or read! But even with the occasional neck-cuddle acrobatics, his comforting presence is a constant source of warmth and unwavering affection, a true reminder of the unconditional love and joy pets bring into our lives. He truly is a cherished member of our family.

St. Patrick's Day themed green lunch for kids and children painting Easter eggs with q-tips
St. Patrick’s Day always calls for a dash of festive fun, especially when you’re spending the day with bright-eyed nanny kids! This year, we fully embraced the green theme with a vibrant lunch spread that was as playful as it was nutritious. Our menu included delightful green milk, creamy green yogurt, fresh kiwi slices, wholesome peas, and even a creative batch of cleverly colored green mac & cheese. I was a little nervous they might be “weirded out” by the unusual hues of their meal, but thankfully, their adventurous spirits prevailed, and they thoroughly enjoyed their emerald feast. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday and inject a bit of magic into an otherwise ordinary lunch. Creating themed meals is such a fantastic way to engage kids, stimulate their imagination, and often makes them more willing to try new foods they might otherwise shy away from. It’s all about making healthy eating exciting!

Later in the month, with Easter just around the corner, we channeled our inner artists for a creative session. Painting with kids is always an adventure, and over the years, I’ve picked up a little tip that saves a lot of heartache (and prevents unfortunate brown paint mixtures!): provide one Q-tip per color. This simple yet effective trick prevents all the beautiful vibrant hues from quickly turning into an indistinguishable muddy brown mess. Each child was able to create their own unique and colorful Easter egg masterpiece, allowing their individual creativity to shine without the frustration of muddied colors. It’s a small adjustment that makes a huge difference in the outcome and significantly enhances the enjoyment of the art session for everyone involved. It’s a technique I highly recommend for any children’s craft activity involving multiple colors!

Adult coloring book session with a selfie stick and an Easter family photo with Ryan and Salsa
Friday nights sometimes call for a different kind of wild adventure, and for me, that often means indulging in the therapeutic world of adult coloring books. Talk about a crazy night, right? The top picture captures one such evening, where I was attempting to unwind and de-stress with intricate patterns and a rainbow of colored pencils. While it was *supposed* to be a profoundly relaxing activity, Salsa, our mischievous feline, had entirely other plans. He seemed to think my colored pencils were chew toys, constantly batting at them and attempting to bite the tips, making for a rather amusing, albeit slightly frustrating, coloring companion. His playful interference definitely added an unexpected element to my “calm” evening! And yes, you spotted it correctly – I totally used a selfie stick to capture that moment of serene (or not-so-serene) artistic endeavor! Sometimes you just have to embrace the tools that help you capture life’s quirky, candid moments. Adult coloring is a fantastic way to practice mindfulness and engage in a calming activity, even if a furry friend decides to join in the most unhelpful way possible.

The bottom photo brings us to a joyful Easter celebration. It’s a cherished snapshot of Ryan, Salsa, and me, wishing everyone a Happy Easter! While Ryan is looking exceptionally good and composed, Salsa and I appear to have embraced a somewhat “wacky” aesthetic, perhaps a testament to the fun and relaxed atmosphere of the holiday, or maybe just our natural goofiness. These family photos, even the slightly goofy ones, are always treasured. They perfectly capture the spirit of our little family, complete with our charmingly eccentric cat. Holidays are truly about coming together, enjoying each other’s company, and making lasting memories, and this Easter was no exception. It was a day filled with warmth, laughter, and a touch of silliness that we wouldn’t trade for anything.

A slice of lemon sheet cake ready to be served and a behind-the-scenes shot of a baby photoshoot
Our kitchen, despite the “Out of the Kitchen” title, always has some sweet secrets brewing, and this month is no exception! Here’s a delicious sneak peek of a vibrant lemon sheet cake recipe that we’re incredibly excited to share with you all very soon. This cake is a true winner – it’s wonderfully quick to prepare, incredibly easy to bake, and perfectly party-friendly, making it an ideal dessert for any gathering, celebration, or simply a lovely treat for yourself. The bright, zesty lemon flavor is simply irresistible, offering a burst of sunshine in every bite, and its convenient sheet cake format makes serving a breeze, especially for a crowd. Keep a close eye out for the full recipe post, because you won’t want to miss out on this delightful creation! We’re constantly experimenting to bring you recipes that are both delicious and approachable, and this one definitely fits the bill.

The second photo offers a particularly sweet glimpse behind the scenes of a very special project: a baby photoshoot I recently had the immense pleasure of doing for my best friend. This was my very first time venturing into the delicate and heartwarming world of infant photography, and I was absolutely thrilled with the results. Capturing the innocence, delicate features, and fleeting beauty of a newborn is such a unique and profoundly rewarding experience. Despite my initial nerves about posing and lighting such a tiny subject, the pictures turned out SO cute, brimming with tender moments and adorable expressions that truly captured the essence of this precious new life. It was a privilege to help my best friend document this cherished stage, and it definitely sparked a new interest in this incredibly heartwarming and specialized genre of photography. There’s something truly magical about freezing those fleeting early moments in time, creating lasting memories for a family.

Adorable baby Clara smiling sweetly
And here she is, the adorable star of her very own photoshoot! This is Clara, and she is truly, utterly adorable! Every tiny smile, every delicate yawn, every curious glance just melts your heart and fills the room with joy. Spending time with her and capturing her sweet, budding personality was an absolute delight, creating images that I know her family will treasure for a lifetime. Her innocent charm brightened up the whole month, and it was an honor to be a part of documenting her precious early days.

Getting More Personal: Life’s Little Adventures and Lessons

March has truly been a refreshing and incredibly rewarding month for us. Coming off the heels of a particularly busy February, which felt like a whirlwind of activities and commitments, it’s been incredibly nice to intentionally slow down and savor the quieter moments. The arrival of glorious spring weather, coupled with the magic of daylight saving time, has made being outdoors an absolute joy again. There’s nothing quite like that extra hour of daylight in the evening to boost spirits and encourage more outdoor activity after a long winter. The day we “spring ahead” each year truly feels like my favorite day – it signals warmer days, longer evenings, and a renewed sense of energy and optimism. I’ve been eagerly taking advantage of being able to run outside in shorts and a t-shirt, even in March, which is a rare and cherished luxury. The crisp air, budding trees, and blooming scenery make every mile feel invigorating and freeing, a true connection with nature.

However, with the joy of running sometimes comes the inevitable challenge of injury. Despite my enthusiasm for hitting the pavement, I’ve recently encountered a case of runner’s knee, an issue I’ve thankfully never experienced before. While it doesn’t cause excruciating pain *during* the run itself, the real discomfort sets in with everyday movements – bending my knee to kneel down, climbing stairs, or even just sitting down and getting up from a chair. It’s a constant, dull ache that has definitely impacted my routine and forced me to re-evaluate my training. It’s a frustrating setback for someone who loves to stay active, but it’s also a valuable lesson in listening intently to my body and prioritizing recovery. I’m focusing on gentle stretches, targeted strengthening exercises, and giving my knee the much-needed rest it requires, hoping to be back to full strength soon. This experience has deepened my appreciation for unhindered movement and underscored the paramount importance of injury prevention and proper self-care for any active lifestyle.

One of the most delightful new traditions Ryan and I have started this month is what we lovingly call “Tuesdate” – dedicating our Tuesday evenings to an intentional and uninterrupted date. The work week can often be a hectic blur, filled with endless tasks, various evening activities, and commitments that make quality time together feel rushed or easily overlooked. Tuesdates have quickly become our sacred, non-negotiable window for connection and rejuvenation. We’ve established a sweet little routine: every Tuesday, we head to our favorite cozy coffee shop, a place that feels like a warm embrace. Ryan always opts for his comforting coffee, while I indulge in a delicious scoop (or two!) of my favorite gelato. It’s a simple ritual, but these dedicated hours, away from distractions and the demands of our daily lives, allow us to truly chat, laugh, and simply enjoy each other’s company. These moments are truly sweet, and I find myself falling even more deeply in love with him, appreciating the thoughtfulness, consistency, and genuine connection that these regular dates foster. It’s a beautiful reminder that consistent, small gestures can strengthen a relationship immensely and keep the spark alive.

This month also brought a revelation in the realm of shopping! I just discovered that I have an absolute love for J. Crew. For someone as petite as I am, finding clothes that fit well can often be an incredibly frustrating and disheartening experience. It feels like a constant battle to find pieces that don’t require extensive alterations, or simply drown my small frame. So, imagine my sheer delight and relief when we stopped at a J. Crew outlet and I found a multitude of beautifully designed clothes that fit *perfectly* off the rack! It was an eye-opening experience, and I honestly feel like I’ve been missing out on this brand my entire life. The quality and fit were exceptional, and it’s such a relief to finally find a go-to place for stylish apparel that consistently suits my petite frame. It makes shopping, which can often be a chore, feel like a genuine pleasure.

And the retail therapy didn’t stop there! This month, I also snagged an incredible deal on a marble slab for a mere $30! A local kitchen store was going out of business, advertising everything at 50% off. After spotting the marble slab, which I’d been eyeing for food photography backdrops and baking projects, I decided to try my luck. I managed to talk the sales lady down even further, pointing out a few minor scuff marks, and to my surprise, she agreed! The euphoria of the bargain was slightly overshadowed by the sheer physical challenge of transporting it. The worst part of the whole deal was attempting to manage carrying the heavy, cumbersome slab by myself to my car, navigating through the parking lot. Let’s just say my muscles were *definitely* sore the next day, a testament to the effort but a small price to pay for such a fantastic find. It’s these little victories, finding quality items at unbeatable prices, that truly make a month memorable and remind you of the rewards of persistence!

Before we wrap up this month’s “Out of the Kitchen” post, I wanted to share one last inspiring discovery that has brought a little extra beauty into my daily life. If you, like me, appreciate the beauty and solace found in bible verses thoughtfully paired with stunning imagery, then I absolutely LOVE this woman’s work! Her Flickr gallery is a true feast for the eyes and soul, offering a calming and uplifting blend of spiritual wisdom and exquisite artistic expression. It’s a wonderful resource for daily inspiration, reflection, and a gentle reminder of faith, all presented in such an aesthetically pleasing and accessible way. I wholeheartedly encourage you to check out her collection for a dose of beauty and meaningful contemplation – it’s a wonderful way to pause and reflect in our busy lives.
