Memorable Valentine’s Day Moments

Valentine’s Day isn’t just about gifts; it’s about shared experiences and creating lasting memories. I’m certain everyone has a treasury of memorable Valentine’s Day moments, filled with laughter, surprises, and perhaps a few endearing mishaps. My partner is truly a sweetie, always finding ways to make me feel extraordinarily special on this romantic holiday, often with charming and sometimes unexpected gestures.

High School Sweethearts: A Balloon Surprise

One particular Valentine’s Day stands out vividly from our senior year of high school – cue the “awwwww”s, yes, we are high school sweethearts! Ryan was on the tennis team, and he ingeniously enlisted the younger players to help him pull off a magnificent surprise. One by one, about eight different guys entered my classroom, each bearing a balloon just for me! I recall being absolutely mortified, blushing crimson with embarrassment as the balloons accumulated around my desk. Then, as the grand finale, Ryan himself walked into my class and presented me with a single, elegant rose. It was such an incredibly sweet and unforgettable gesture, a testament to his thoughtful and romantic nature even back then.

A College Adventure: The Noodles Incident

The following year, we were navigating our freshman year of college, a time when money was scarce and public transportation was our primary mode of travel. We planned a low-key lunch at a casual Noodles restaurant, intending to save our more romantic dinner for a fancier establishment. The restaurant we had reservations at was in a neighboring city, requiring us to take two buses and then walk a significant half-mile. In a comical turn of events, we somehow boarded the second bus heading in the complete opposite direction!

Miles later, as the scenery grew increasingly unfamiliar, we realized our mistake. We hopped off the bus in the middle of a deserted, rather cold and eerie street, left to ponder our navigational misadventure. The wait for the next bus, heading in the correct direction, felt interminable – a full twenty minutes spent shivering and strategizing. By this point, we were not only significantly late for our fancy dinner reservation but also absolutely famished. The kind of hungry where any food would do. And what was the very first, and in fact, only restaurant we spotted upon finally reaching our destination? Another Noodles! And so, that memorable Valentine’s Day, we found ourselves dining on noodles for both lunch and dinner. It’s safe to say we steered clear of Noodles for a good few months after that experience!

Crafting Valentine’s Day Donuts for Your Sweetheart

This year, Valentine’s Day came a little early for my sweetie when we eagerly devoured these delicious homemade donuts. There’s something truly special about presenting a gift that you’ve poured your heart into creating. While these donuts were a huge hit, I’m already planning other delightful desserts to surprise him. Perhaps one of these refreshing parfait recipes or a rich, creamy cheesecake will be next on the menu. Don’t forget other fantastic Valentine’s Day dessert ideas like cherry dump cake, strawberry whipped cream creations, or luscious chocolate whipped cream desserts!

Treat your Valentine to a batch of these cute homemade donuts! A delightful and personal way to express your love.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 6 tbsp milk (any kind)
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp vegetable or canola oil
  • ⅓ cup Wilton Candy Melts, Light Pink + ½ tbsp vegetable shortening (for glaze)
  • ⅓ cup Wilton Candy Melts, Bright Pink + ½ tbsp vegetable shortening (for glaze)

For the Royal Icing:

  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar (confectioners’ sugar)
  • ½ tbsp meringue powder
  • 1 tbsp + 1 tsp water
  • Plus: Gel-based food coloring (we used pink and purple)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Donuts: Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F (160 degrees C). Lightly spray a donut pan with cooking spray, then use a paper towel to gently spread and remove any excess.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whisk them together until thoroughly mixed.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the milk, egg, vanilla extract, and vegetable/canola oil. Whisk until all the wet ingredients are well blended.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to tough donuts.
  5. Transfer the donut batter into a large piping bag (or a sturdy Ziploc bag with one corner snipped off). Pipe the batter evenly into each donut hole in your prepared pan, filling them approximately two-thirds full.
  6. Bake for 10 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into a donut comes out clean. Remove the pan from the oven and allow the donuts to rest in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Base Icing for the Donuts:

  1. In separate microwave-safe bowls, melt each color of Wilton Candy Melts with its corresponding ½ tbsp of vegetable shortening. We recommend microwaving on 50% power for 2-minute intervals, stirring every 20-30 seconds, until the candy melts are smooth and fully melted.
  2. For easy dipping, transfer the melted chocolate into small, shallow dishes that are wide enough to accommodate a donut. Holding the edges of a cooled donut, dip it into the melted chocolate, then gently lift and pause for a few seconds, allowing any excess glaze to drip off. Place the glazed donuts back on the wire rack to set completely before proceeding with royal icing decorations.

Royal Icing Decoration:

  1. In a small mixing bowl, combine the powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water. Using an electric mixer, mix on low speed for about 3-5 minutes until the icing achieves a matte appearance and a smooth consistency suitable for piping.
  2. Divide the royal icing into a few small bowls, depending on how many colors you plan to use for decoration. Remember to leave some white icing if you wish for contrasting details. Add gel-based food coloring to each bowl and mix well to achieve your desired shades.
  3. Begin decorating your donuts as creatively as you desire! We found it easiest to transfer the colored icing into small squeeze bottles for precise detailing. Experiment with various designs: “xoxo” messages, polka dots, hearts, multi-colored stripes, or elegant cross-hatched lines.
  4. Once decorated, let the royal icing set completely, which may take a few hours depending on humidity. Surprise your Valentine with these beautiful homemade donuts, and store any leftovers in an airtight container to maintain freshness.

Tips for Perfect Valentine’s Day Donuts

Achieving bakery-quality donuts at home is easier than you think with a few simple tips:

  • Donut Pan Quality: A good quality non-stick donut pan is essential. Even with a non-stick pan, a light coating of cooking spray ensures easy release. Avoid over-spraying, which can create a greasy film.
  • Don’t Overmix: When combining wet and dry ingredients, mix just until no streaks of flour remain. Overmixing develops gluten, leading to a tougher, chewier donut rather than a light, cake-like texture.
  • Piping Bag Precision: Using a piping bag (or a sturdy plastic bag with the corner snipped) makes filling the donut pan much neater and ensures evenly shaped donuts. This also helps prevent overfilling, which can cause the donuts to lose their classic shape.
  • Cooling is Key: Allow your donuts to cool completely on a wire rack before glazing or decorating. Applying glaze to warm donuts will cause it to melt and slide off, resulting in a messy finish. Patience here pays off!
  • Melt Candy Melts Carefully: Candy melts can seize if overheated. Use low power settings on your microwave and stir frequently to achieve a smooth, pourable consistency. The vegetable shortening helps achieve that perfect dipping consistency.
  • Get Creative with Royal Icing: Royal icing is fantastic for intricate details. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different piping tips or even just a small snip from a plastic bag. Practice on a piece of parchment paper first if you’re nervous about your designs.
  • Storage: While these donuts are best enjoyed fresh, they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days. They might lose a bit of their softness over time, but their delicious flavor will remain.

Beyond Donuts: More Romantic Dessert Ideas

If you’re looking to diversify your Valentine’s Day dessert menu, or perhaps planning a romantic dinner that calls for a different kind of sweet ending, here are some other delightful ideas:

  • Chocolate Lava Cakes: Indulgent and sophisticated, these individual cakes with a molten chocolate center are a classic romantic dessert. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.
  • Strawberry Tarts: Light, refreshing, and beautiful, a fresh strawberry tart with a creamy pastry cream filling is a perfect choice for those who prefer fruit-based desserts.
  • Red Velvet Cupcakes: The vibrant red hue and cream cheese frosting make red velvet cupcakes inherently romantic and perfectly themed for Valentine’s Day.
  • Champagne Sorbet: For a lighter, elegant palate cleanser or dessert, a delicate champagne sorbet adds a touch of class to any romantic meal.
  • Heart-Shaped Brownies: Simple yet effective, cut your favorite brownie recipe into heart shapes after baking for an easy and adorable treat.
  • Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries: A timeless classic, these are effortless to make and always impress. Enhance them with sprinkles or a drizzle of white chocolate.

No matter what you choose, the most important ingredient is always the love you put into making it!
